Godzilla (Various actors, various films, 1954-1995, 1999-2004)

<img src=http://www.freewebs.com/doomsdaymonsters/godzilla7.jpg alt=gz

* Please note this excludes the U.S. version since that large iguana was Godzilla in name only and true fans don't consider it canon.

Risky, really? I've always found Godzilla to be a popular movie character. Or should we just stick to humans?

Re: DVDTalk draft game

well it's not that he isn't a popular movie character, but there isn't much acting involved, it's a guy in a suit. You don't have to pick humans. For example all those who have picked animated characters have voice actors behind them, so those are perfectly fine.

Another good choice could be Gollum, since Andy Serkis did act for that character.

That's just my view, maybe the voters will overlook it.

Ok, gotcha. I didn't know we were focusing more on the acting and less on the character. I was viewing this as a popularity contest more than anything. Still, I'll stick with my choice.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

Based on the voting of prior competitions, it will be a popularity contest, and most decisions will be made based on 1-2 characters instead of the full list. Additionally DVDTalk draft voters have short memories, and like characters released in recent films over anything more than five years old.

Which Buster Keaton character are you going to choose?

And Groucho is right about 1-2 favorites over the whole list.

I understood this to be a character-based competition, not an acting performance-based competition.

The performance adds depth to the character. Like The Hulk is a great character, but he has no depth in the movies because the performance is limited because he can't talk and he's mad all the time. And Alec Baldwin is great in Glengarry Glen Ross, but his character has zero background other than his watch costs more than your car. So it's a combination IMO.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

It should have been assumed that whomever you pick has a human performance behind the character. A character that has some human emotions and traits. MinLShaw if you want to draft the T-Rex from Jurassic Park or something, be my guest...you'll probably lose 1st round though.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

On this forum, anybody who's list isn't stocked with Joss Whedon and/or Dark Knight characters will lose first round.

Re: DVDTalk draft game

Not to be snotty, but I'm over the age of seven. I understand that an actor plays a character. I'm not likely to cast a vote for Godzilla, but that has to do with the fact I've never really watched any of those movies. I understand, though, the appeal that the character has to its audience. People have enthusiastically paid to see Godzilla movies...to see Godzilla, the character. The appeal there has always been Godzilla. Why should the character Godzilla be frowned upon for not being a demonstration of memorable acting?

Re: DVDTalk draft game

I'm being glib but one thing you need to realize Osiris3657 is that everybody will be voting on their own criteria. Like I said earlier, most will look for their favorite one or two characters, and favor the lists that have those. Others will look for well-rounded lists. Some may look for characters that had the best performances. Etc.

Long story short: Godzilla is as good of a pick as any made thus far, IMHO. However, I will not be voting for KillerCannibal's list since he didn't use the name "Gojira".

Re: DVDTalk draft game

I was more surprised by the R.J. MacReady pick than Godzilla.
And Joss Whedon wrote Toy Story - who knew?

I know! That really took me by surprise when we watched the Blu-ray. I never paid any attention in the previous times I watched it.

Mac and 'zilla are great picks, IMO.

I'd have a hard time voting against them if we had to vote now
