Calling it now... Avatar 2 will be the first Cameron movie that tanks.

Not saying it won't make some money, just that it won't be nearly as successful as his last few movies.

You're sitting on the fence with that statement.

What do you mean by "tanks"? That it won't make back its budget and marketing costs? Because it's guaranteed to make that much. Remember the China factor, where big movies like this make tons of money.

And his last two movies are the two highest grossing movies of all time. Even if Avatar 2 makes only half of what Avatar 1 grossed, it would still be one of the top 10 grossing movies of all time. So what are you estimating it will make globally?

I don't think "tank" is the right term. Maybe underperform, at least compared to the original. I mean, I never thought to myself "I can't wait until there is another Avatar movie". I mean, without the 3D factor (which boosted it's box office) it's just a run of the mill sci-fi adventure with really neat special effects IMO.

I'm looking forward to Avatar 2. I think the special effects would probably be more advanced then what was used in the first one.

It will likely not tank but will most likely be a terrible movie outside of the special effects.

Cameron has tanked in the past with the Abyss. Regarding Avatar 2, domestic could be nothing and I think it will still make 2 billion. Just imagine how much the international market has opened up since 2009. He's tapped into worldwide appeal with Avatar... he doesn't even need the U.S. revenues to be successful.

My word is "fascinating". James Cameron's movies are always fascinating to watch. He always finds something to show and tell that's just a little more ambitious than everything else. That's actually the way I'd describe his entire filmography.

I'm all ready for the Pandora-verse. We have all the other verses now. Expanding on Avatar seems logical.

I'm not expecting just another Avatar rehash. I'm confident there's something more coming.

I'll be the guy there at 7:30PM on Thursday (I'm guessing sometime in 2029 and I'll be taking my wife and kids) to buy a ticket.

Can't believe that they are filming 4 movies in a row.

Titanic and the first Avatar were both terrible movies outside of the special effects.

Yet, The Abyss is one of his best movies IMO. The problem was the studio butchered it for theatrical release, cutting out the entire point of the movie and trying to turn it into a love story.

I can't believe more franchises aren't done simultaneously. I was outright shocked they didn't do it for the new Star Wars sequels. If they had, we might have gotten enough footage of Carrie Fisher for all movies.

But regarding Avatar, I can't bring myself to get excited. I saw the original in the theater with the 3D and it was exciting, but I've never been compelled to revisit it. That's usually how I feel about Devlin/Emmerich films - they're fun at the theatre, but I never want to see them again. I only have Godzilla 1998 on Bluray because I'm a Godzilla movie completist.

I can’t believe anyone wants to see another Avatar movie, let alone four more.

This is what I think every time I see mention of these sequels. 4 sequels for a movie that's 8 years old and counting. With today's attention spans it might as well have been released alongside the Wizard of Oz.

I'd love to think all this development time is being spent on mapping out a magnificent 5-movie story arc which will help us understand and accept its mediocre and derivative first installment. But something tells me it's more about having enough screen time for all the dazzling 3D ooohs and aaahs Cameron has planned for us.

The one two punch of Titanic and Avatar has made it clear that Cameron has sacrificed story for cheap sentiment.

Personally I have no interest in continuing yet another story about a white man who finds himself with a group of simple but pure native peoples and in the process saves them from the machinations of the less culturally evolved other white men who just want to exploit the pure, innocent, simple natives.

I certainly don't. Would much rather Cameron moved on to other efforts.

What's gonna be cool is when Avatar 2 makes a billion on its own and making all of it's budget for all four them. It's brilliant.

But really... what happens if the second comes out and there isn't the type of interest they thought there would be?

I think the marketing department will be working in overdrive. I predict the trailers are gonna rock.

I’m not doubting the movies will make money. I also do not doubt that they will be bad movies.

That's fitting for a bunch of franchises IMO

I can’t believe anyone wants to see another Resident Evil movie, let alone four more.

I can’t believe anyone wants to see another Underworld movie, let alone four more.

I can’t believe anyone wants to see another Saw movie, let alone four more.

I can’t believe anyone wants to see another Transformers movie, let alone four more.

I can’t believe anyone wants to see another Pirates movie, let alone four more.

I hear that Pirates 1 isn't as good as Pirates 2, but you have to be careful when you're seeking out Pirates 2 on blu-ray because most copies are only the R-rated cut, which is much much shorter that the full version.

I agree with all of that. Death to franchise filmmaking!
