Not when the "precedent" in this discussion, Peter Jackson, has done both. Heavenly Creatures and Lord of the Rings came from the same guy, but it seems that Heavenly Creatures can't come again from Jackson. Or at least he hasn't proven so. So it's put to Cameron: if he's "king of the world", give people no reason to doubt it and make a statement of your versatility as a director.

It's not two different types of filmmakers at all, I don't believe that. Coppola did The Godfather, but then he did The Conversation. Different films in scale and story ambition and budget, yet few would argue that both weren't excellent movies.

Wasn't aware that Alien was directed by Cameron himself.

The man could literally direct a three-hour film of him shitting on a toilet in 3-D and it could make billions just off the name recognition alone.

However, I feel Avatar 2 will be his next effort. If not that, a documentary.

What would I like Cameron to do?

I think another Cameron/Ah-nuld outing would be cool, but I doubt that will happen.

I would love to see Cameron do a Superhero movie, and show all these guys (except Nolan who succeeded with Batman) how to do an action movie but still make you care about the characters and story.

Cameron should follow the Wachowski Bros.' example of ANIMATRIX and hire the best Japanese animators to do an anime version of AVATAR.

The answer to this is extremely simple. True Lies 2.

Regardless, I'd like to see Cameron do another massive populist movie that cranks the 'magic' of movies up another notch. With T2, Titanic and now Avatar he's managed to do it three times, and in relatively different arenas.

I hope it's something a bit different though, like a Western or something.

Is there a possible telling of a 3-hour Hindenberg film out there?

Re: So What Does Cameron Do Now?

While I know it cannot count as it is an amusement park attraction, I did catch Cameron's Terminator 3D spectacle (which I personally see as the official end to the Terminator saga). If anyone thought Avatar in IMAX 3D was immersive, they need to see this short flick. While it had bits with stand in actors in the audience, the movie parts were mind blowing. If theaters like the one utilized for this start popping up across the country, then there is no doubt in my mind that Cameron could fully realize a step into total audience immersion with the movie.

I guess making some of the most memorable and iconic films of the past several decades counts for nothing these days.

Yes he is. He's not a great writer, but he is a great director. Don't blurr the lines.
