Yeah, you don't make nearly $8m off only 160 screens in 1 weekend and not go wide.
(it averaged $49,379 per theater, by comparison the #1 movie for the weekend (Couples Retreat - $34.2m weekend) made $11,429 per theater.)
It made more per theater this weekend than the remainder of the top 10 combined (per theater gross).

Haven't seen this yet - some friends said they didn't think it was very good. Poor performances and not very scary. It's too bad becuase I still think Blair Witch is really frightening and enjoyable - one of my favorites actually.
I think a big problem is that I just have a hard time suspending disbelief when it comes to ghost stories - especially if they're sold as 'reality' like this movie tries to do. What I loved about Blair Witch was that it didn't really seem to involve any explicitly supernatural elements, even though really strange and creepy things happened. It had more to do with cultish mysticism. The fact that they were camping in the woods was also very relatable.
But demons and haunted houses and such nonsense stopped being interesting or scary to me at some point in my early teens.

Watched the movie early today. I really enjoyed it and was scared with some parts. I wasn't disappointed with all the hype.
It's compared with TBWP but I didn't find that movie scary except for the last 10 minutes or so. I never felt the same kind of scary mood I felt with Paranormal Activity.
I guess it's because I'm kinda like Micah, I don't believe in ghosts, I don't believe in demons, what are you suppose to do? Your gf is a little bit crazy, that's it. She heard voices at night, maybe it's you talking in your dreams, etc. I read somewhere that one of the best parts of the movie is that they don't show you anything, they just suggest things, and that works really well.
Then ending was fine and kinda reminded me of Dead Space.
Oh and I was *strangely* attracted to the female lead.

Re: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - Get the word out!
So I saw this last night, and as I figured, the theater audience will either make or break the experience. Sadly, my crowd SUCKED. I would say roughly 50 teens, none of whom would shut the fuck up for the entire movie. Oh yea, and cell phones out to boot. I felt like I was at a concert at some points because there was so much light from those damn things.
They laughed and made fun of Micah, complained how unscary each night was, etc. It really ruined the movie for me.
When it ended, they mostly boo'ed, shouted out a few curse words, and made fun of the movie. I guess none of them knew what they were expecting, and I was reminded why I hate going to the theater these days.
As for myself, I enjoyed it for what it was. I felt they could have trimmed down a few nights. It got tiresome switching from morning to night every few minutes. It really was a slow burn. Still, it was cool to see both myself (9/30) and my date's (9/20) birthday end up as one of the nights
So it seems i'm the only one that had a bad experience so far?

I'm finally getting to see this tomorrow night.
Going with two friends, one of which has already seen it and loved it.

Katie Featherston is a true stunner. Don't you know that Texas gals are the most attractive in the U.S.?
I actually went and saw the film a second time this past Sunday in Arlington, her home town. Much closer than Dallas.
On an unrelated note, the writer and director of The Strangers is from Crowley, which is right next door to me as well. Too bad that movie sucked though.

I seem to be in the minority here, but this movie left me feeling pretty underwhelmed after I saw it this past weekend. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with me getting too caught up in the hype, but I didn't find the movie scary or creepy, and this is coming from a huge horror fan.

Re: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - Get the word out!
Saw this tonight with a friend of mine.
Fun film. Katie Featherston was pretty good but Micah just got on my nerves. Good atmosphere and good jump scares.
I thought the film was pretty typical "Haunted House" faire, but amped up by the POV camera and a "realistic" location. Then again I thought those points actually made the film about 10 times more effective.
I'll most likely be getting this on DVD/BD whichever drops first.
Did anyone laugh when:

Dammit! I'm already kinda sick of hearing about this. By the time it hits my country I'm bound to go "That's it!?" and then probably end up hating it. Fuck hype!

I'm on the fence if I should see this or not. Admittedly, I'm a giant p*ssy when it comes to paranormal stuff. That said, are the scares more or less the psychological implied type or is it the visual, in your face stuff? I won't see Exorcism because I heard it's scary as hell... is this worse than that?

If you're a giant pussy, I'd say stay at home.
But, personally, I didn't think it was scary enough to give people nightmares or anything.

I've been describing the movie as "unsettling". There are a few jump scares, but the basic premise of "what is happening in your house while you sleep" is one that has stuck with me a bit after seeing it. Not giving my nightmares or anything, but when I hear weird-ass things in my house at 2:00 in the morning, it makes you think a bit.

This movie was made for you.

Hearing that is what got me to thinking about NOT seeing this movie -- ever.. but damn I want to.
