As to whether you should see it or not: If the unbearably horrifying sight of doors moving a few inches by themselves, keys placed in the middle of the kitchen floor and low subwoofer rumblings frightens you, then you'll be filling your pants. Otherwise you'll be sitting there saying, "That's it?"

Saw it this morning and loved it. It's not only one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen, it's one of the most effective. Meaning, I have a feeling I'll be having a nightmare or two from it. Also, I went to a crack of dawn showing with maybe only 10 people in the theater. And I'm actually glad I didn't see it with a full house. The film is so quiet, you need to hear all the sounds. And I have a feeling a full audience moving around, eating, talking, coughing (whatever) would not only break the tension, but drown out those sounds.

** guess no one noticed it?? the reason why Im pointing it out is simply because.. there might have been some re-editing going on on Night #s...

Re: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - Get the word out!
I seem to be in the minority here, but this movie left me feeling pretty underwhelmed after I saw it this past weekend. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with me getting too caught up in the hype, but I didn't find the movie scary or creepy, and this is coming from a huge horror fan.
Maybe the midnight thing has a lot to do with it. If it had been 25 minutes or something, I'd probably have an altogether different opinion. It has its moments but not nearly enough of 'em.

Spoiler:
Definately an interesting premise. I don't think it was a perfect movie. I did like how the problems escalated as they interacted more and more. I didn't go crazy over it. But I did find myself grinning a lot. And I did have to settle myself during the night scenes, looking all around and expecting something to happen. I guess that's just the defense mechanism inside me, strengthened by watching so many horror movies.
The dude was a day trader. I actually chuckled when I heard that. I assume that this movie was made at least a couple years ago. Maybe it was some sort of a karma demon.
The original ending (Sundance, was it?) sounds interesting. I assmure that you guys have talked about it, since this is on page 13. If it's on DVD, that'll be enough to get me to buy it.

There are a few mildly creepy moments, but not a genuine scare in the entire short running time (this is all my opinion of course; I hate when opinion is presented as fact).

I think it comes down to how much someone places themselves within the situation presented in the movie. If I was given the choice in real life of dealing with an ax-wielding lunatic breaking into my house or an invisible entity growling in the middle of the night and moving shit around my house, I'd take the ax-wielding lunatic every time.

I told everyone this was my last viewing as I'll be at Saw VI this weekend (despite how much I know it'll be terrible).I think the film still holds up on the third viewing. I was still unnerved during the final act; but the second screening still had people actively engaging with the film. The third screening was fairly empty (despite a Friday night) and I had the lovely pleasure of dealing with some dumb bitch behind me giggling all through out.
Turns out I actually knew said dumb bitch, but she didn't recognize me when I told her to shut the fuck up during the movie as I've lost 60 pounds (thanks Biggest Loser thread).

Just got back from seeing this with the wife. 11:30am showing with a pretty small crowd. I really liked it. I found it creepy and rather unsettling. And I got a massive laugh out of another audience member's reaction to the ending. A very audible "What the hell?!?" broke the silence nicely, lol.

In my theater, when it would go to a night scene, everyone would get quiet and tense, but some douche would let out a loud burp or a "BOO!" every time. EVERY time.

I'll be seeing this on Friday. I know a few people who have seen it and liked it. I'll probably see it at 4 pm showing. It will probably be a small crowd which I'm ok with. One of my friends saw it last Friday night with a packed theater and he said they were too many people screaming at dumb parts.

Just got back from seeing this. All in all, it was well done. I especially appreciated the Pavlovian use of the time-stamp, and the fact that just about everything had a pay-off throughout the film. This is definitely a film that I think benefits from being seen with a large, into-it crowd.
Incidentally, for which categories is this appropriate for the Horror Movie Challenge?

Re: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - Get the word out!
I saw this Sunday afternoon. There were a fair number of people there, but it wasn't packed. I had a blast, thought it was a great, creepy movie. There were a couple of girls sitting right behind me who were screaming at all the scary parts the whole movie. It certainly added to the fun. But the movie was getting reactions from more people than just them. I thought it was very effective, though I think I would have preferred another ending.
I don't get the acting criticisms. I think both of the leads did really well. I had no problems accepting them as a couple right away. Their interactions just seemed very natural to me. Their characters acted very much like people I know.
Oh, and with all the Blair Witch Project Talk. I preferred Paranormal Activity. I just thought it was a stronger movie and managed to get me more emotionally invested.

I can't find how many theaters it'll be expanding to this weekend. If it enters 1500 locations this weekend, I could see another $19-20 million weekend. If it's more, I can see this going head to head with Saw.

Early Weekend Predictions
by Phil Contrino
Two horror films will face off this weekend with the intention of claiming the top spot at the box office.
This weekend, moviegoers looking for a thrill will have to chose between Saw VI and Paranormal Activity. Meanwhile, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant and Astro Boy will compete for the attention of young males. Not to be forgotten, Amelia should appeal to adult audiences who are ready to start digesting prestige pics during the fall season.
By now, Lionsgate's Saw films have become a Halloween tradition. And while the cumulative grosses have declined with each passing film, Saw III, Saw IV and Saw V all opened with more than $30 million. Unfortunately for Lionsgate, Paranormal Activity is going to take a sizable chunk out of the sixth installment's audience, so a $30 million opening weekend is unlikely.
As of 4 p.m. PT, Saw VI is responsible for six percent of daily sales on MovieTickets.com and four percent on Fandango.com. Those numbers should increase as the weekend draws near.
Expect Saw VI to open with around $25 million during its opening weekend. It will mark a decline in the series for sure, but there is potential for improvement since the seventh installment is going to be in 3D.
Paramount will be expanding Paranormal Activity to nearly 2,000 locations from 760 last weekend. The thriller has been pushed forward by positive word of mouth, and it's bound to do more damage at the box office this weekend.
As of 4 p.m. PT, PA is responsible for seven percent of daily sales on Fandango.com and five percent on Fandango.com.
Expect the Paramount release to grab around $23 million during its fifth weekend of release.
“Given that there’s just a week left until Halloween, this weekend is driven by horror—and is also looking to be enormously competitive," says John Singh, a spokesperson for Flixster. "Paranormal Activity is maintaining great momentum at Flixster, with overall pageviews up another 36% this week. But that doesn’t mean it’s not facing some real competition. Saw VI is looking very strong, particulary—and not surprisingly—with under-25 males, and its Flixster activity grew by 136% this week, so there’s definitely growing interest."
