Most definitely. Let us not also forget 'Spider' in which Ralph Fiennes turns in a hell of a performance. I sure as hell would like to see Fiennes do another film with Cronenberg. I would also like to see Cronenberg do another film with Jeremy Irons.

I agree. He's a consistently great director. It just seems to be a nice return to earlier form.

I always thought Cronenberg should have concluded his "trilogy" of biomechanical-mindfuck flicks. Videodrome and eXistenZ followed by..... I hope he gets to it at some point. At least he's been busy the last few years working consistently.

Crash might be considered number 2. Still, I don't think Cronenberg ever had an official trilogy planned, unless you know something I don't? I think he is just interested in flesh and technology in general.

I don't.

Crash didn't have the biomechanical-stuff, though. I don't count that one at all as part of the "trilogy."

I remember the teeth for bullets that used to freak me out in eXistenZ.

Woo Hoo!!

I'm a huge Cronenberg fan (as you can tell) and this is the first time I've heard of Cosmopolis. Very nice to see him get back to the body horror of his '83 to '99 stretch.

Kind of surprised that he has another film coming out so soon after the last one. Usually he takes 2-3 years between films.

wow. Kind of feels like Cronenberg went G. Noe a bit here and there.

What's Cronenberg using as his camera on this film? There's a certain look to it...and I like it. Kind of cold and...off in a way. I dunno. But I really dig the interior and night shots he's got here. Looks digital over film. Could be wrong though.

re: Cosmopolis (2012, D: Cronenberg) S: Robert Pattinson

I saw this on Saturday afternoon.
I really wanted to like it... I really did... but man... what a bore.
Cronenberg's worst, in my opinion. It starts out really bad, and slowly gets tolerable, at best.

I may give it a second chance when it hits Netflix someday, but it was pretty disappointing. It would have been better as a stage play, not a Cronenberg film.

yeah I've heard almost unanimously bad things about this film. I'm not sure if I'll see it in theaters or not now.

That's sad to hear, SomethingMore. Are you normally a fan of Cronenberg?

Oh yes. I haven't seen everything he's done, but I loved Naked Lunch, eXistenZ, Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, and hell... I even loved Spider. I enjoyed Crash, The Fly, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, and Dead Ringers. A Dangerous Method wasn't my cup of tea, but I appreciated it.

But this... just didn't do anything for me. Maybe my expectations were too high, but right from the get-go, it felt as if most of the actors were reading their lines for the first or second time. The green-screening in the limo was poorly done (unless that was intentional?). There are a handful of brief moments of violence and two of those moments later in the film deliver, but one near the beginning is just painfully bad.

Spoiler:
An important person is being interviewed on a TV show when someone suddenly comes up behind them and stabs them in the eye with a knife. This is set up in the movie as live TV, not some action/drama sort of thing. The camera stays on them the whole time, but you can see that the attacker doesn't even touch the victim with the knife. Their stabbing motions are completely ridiculous. It's hard to explain, but it's not at all the quality of violence or gore that you see in Cronenberg's other films. Even the scenes later in the film are more in line with what you would see in a Cronenberg flick, although still very brief.

re: Cosmopolis (2012, D: Cronenberg) S: Robert Pattinson

Hmm. I can see what you mean. Cronenberg's had some falseness in his work before where the effects just weren't far enough along, but these days it's very unusual for him to half-ass something. He's so deliberate. Maybe it is intentional, but I guess I'll have to wait and see myself, with substantially less anticipation.
