DVD Talk Ratings Thread

Not sure how much want there would be for something like this, but I did some weighted averages of the available ratings of the various poll review threads. IDK, maybe it's the statistics geek in me, but I find it interesting comparing the ratings and all.

Also let me know if I missed any.

Great idea. I like it, almost as much as I like the fact someone other than me is doing it.

Bravo.

Thanks guys. I did find a few more and added them (along with links to make it easier for me to update every once in a while).

a lot of work. great job and fun to see the closeness of ratings!

Thanks. And btw, I am updating the Transformers ratings just about daily. So far around here it's fluctuating around 5.6-5.8 while on IMDb it's gone down from a 7.2 to 6.8.

Love it, nice work. Might be a little busy numbers wise. Why the /5 and /10? I would hope anyone could do that math in their head.

True, though I included the out of 10 for comparison with IMDb and the out of 5 since that's the scale DVD Talk rates them. I know it's a math geek thing, but it's not always a straight x2 from the 5 star rating depending on the rounding (see: Terminator, Star Trek and Tropic Thunder). But I could drop one if it makes it easier to read.

Just looks cluttered, in my not trying to complain opinion. And since you mentioned readability, maybe some bolding or something in those numbers would help.

Oh yeah, I know. Later I might find a better way to present it.

Updated. Transformers remains around a 5.6/10 while IMDb has been steadily declining (now a 6.6).

Updated. Transformers 2 is remaining about the same (5.6/10) and Public Enemies is at a 6.9/10 while on IMDb it's gone down from a (IIRC) 9.1 to 8.7.

Well, I made this into table form but have no idea why there is so much space, lol...

You need to remove all the carriage returns in your html.

Yeah I learned that the hard way, try to compress it down to as few actual lines (don't press Enter) as possible.

Thanks. It's too bad because now it'll really difficult to edit... sigh

I took the liberty of fixing it for you. Hope you don't mind.

Looks great (once the CRs are out)!

Have you thought about adding the RT score(s)?

Any advice to those who work with tables on the forum for making it easier to edit?

"Have you thought about adding the RT score(s)?"

Yeah, I'll probable add that later.

If you have MS Word, you can copy your html into it and then do a search and replace to remove the ^p characters (the carriage returns). I usually build a spreadsheet that adds all the html tags and copy from that to Word, and then to the forum window.

Might give that a try then. I already have the info in Excel so I'll play around with that and see how it goes. Thanks everyone. :)

Re: DVD Talk Ratings Thread

Tried to clean it up, didn't work so well. That said, Yeah I would copy the code into Word and hold on to it, Replace All Carriage Return with a blank space when you want to post an update.

<strike>Also, you can get rid of most of the center tags (need one for the table, then one for ALL the text in the table), it will save a little clutter.</strike>

Edit: Nevermind, that's an IE thing, you have to have the Center tags for compliant web browsers like Firefox. My mistake.

lizard 07-10-09 11:51 AM

I edit my tables in Word and then just paste the update into the DVD Talk edit screen; I would never try to edit in the DVD Talk edit window. I also use colored text for the actual data and leave the table format stuff black, to make it easier to see the data that needs to be updated. Although extra carriage returns are a problem, extra spaces at each end of a table datum entry are helpful to separate it from the formatting characters.

Also, you may already know this, but an easy way to select a block of text is to place the cursor at one end or another, hold down the shift key, and click at the other end of the string. It selects the entire sequence between the two cursor clicks. (That's probably of more use to me because I have long titles and the like, as well as entire table rows, that I routinely edit/delete in my tables.) For selecting individual numbers just double click on them.
