I only ask because IMDB says it follows all four films. The trailer makes it look like a prequel to the original though.

The best film in the series is the only one you need to see prior to seeing Prometheus. That film is A L I E N.

I would suggest watching Aliens though. It is a hell of a ride.

Honestly...I don't think you need to even see Alien for Prometheus. Take the film for what it is. It's a prequel but it's not about the Xenomorph. It's a lot more than that. It leads into but it's not the objective. The idea is bigger than the Xenomorph.

Seriously though. Alien is the intro to the SJ. Probably wouldn't mean as much to someone that just watched Alien for the first time recently. Been waiting over 30 years myself.

I'd say he is only 50% correct. The xenomorph is not the point of Prometheus. While watching the NCAA games on Sunday at a party, we were talking about films we were excited to see. Two of the people there had not heard of Prometheus. I showed them the trailer and they had no idea about anything they saw. Never saw Alien before. The images in the trailer meant nothing to them.

See Alien before you see Prometheus.

Why? The movie shouldn't need Alien. It's standing on it's own two feet very well from the way it's being handled.

I don't think Alien should be required viewing for Prometheus, like others have said it is obviously meant to stand on its own. If I knew someone who had not seen Alien but was interested in Prometheus , I would actually recommend they watch Prometheus first and then Alien as an added bonus.
I just hope that if , Fox doesn't decide to put it in the TV spots and play up its presence. That's when you get people going in expecting one thing and getting ticked that it's something else, thus generating undeserved bad word of mouth. That's the worst thing that can happen to a movie.
