Same could be said for all of them, comic book movies. Maybe DP isn't right for your asshole?
I'm a fan of the character. And from the comics, seems to be a really well balance of humor and action. Add in an engaging/interesting story. Just depends on how this production works it.
I can see this failing as well. Cuz it's an added variety to the the genre. That can be dangerous. Luckily this one is a cheap film for the genre.
The hype is mostly that they're even doing this film at all. It's vulgar, bloody, and part of the X-Men universe. He's a popular character cuz he's just so damn opposite of the norm for the most part.
In my theater, w/ the Hateful 8 crowd, they loved it.

I don't think it's going to be a big hit beyond the fanboys. I do want to see it, but I don't think this type of character is something that will go beyond the one-joke enterprise, as you've described. When that IMAX trailer finished before Star Wars, I could hear people saying comments like "what the hell is he supposed to be?" I also never understood Reynolds doing stuff like visiting kids in the outfit. I mean, isn't this going to be Rated R? It seems Ike he's courting the same demographic that won't be allowed to see this for quite a while.

The thing that is hooking me the most with the trailers and marketing is the writing and comic timing. All the jokes just work for me. It has nothing to do with breaking the fourth wall, swearing, or violence.

Right, and that speaks directly to the demographics Deadpool is aimed at. I was actually surprised that the Star Wars crowd I was at had senior citizens and kids. Deadpool will only have the Hateful 8 crowd, which will yield probably the same amount of $ it makes.

I have a bunch of Deadpool comic collections, and I find them all entertaining to various degrees without getting tired of his shtick. Honestly, you can break down any character to a specific set of attributes and call them one-note, it's all about the stories you put around him and in that regard Deadpool is no different then other hero in my opinion. Yeah, he's highlighted by the attributes mentioned like breaking the fourth wall and his wise ass attitude, but I would hope the rest of the movie can make the character compelling. From the bits in the trailer that show his origin, it seems like it could be.
Now if the humor in general doesn't do it for you, then sure it could get tired and annoying quickly.

Well the 90s Blade wasn't an R-Rated comic. Despite the violence it still had the Comics Code Authority label just like all the other Marvel comics at the time, which were aimed at kids.
Plus, I don't remember the first Blade film really stressing the Marvel Comics association like they do now. I think the Marvel logo got prominent with Blade II or Trinity.
The studio wants to have their cake and eat it too. It's an adult film but they're marketing it in a way to take advantage of the PG-13 superhero audience too.

That ad had nothing to do w/ the PG-13 demographic audience. It was just some BS thing for them to do cuz it'd be funny. I think some of you lot took that one too seriously for its intent.

In an era where a paint-by-numbers Rom-Com can earn over $200m and spawn a sequel because of a swearing bear, I don't think the average movie goer is very discerning when it comes to what's clearly a novelty that wears thin after 5 minutes.

Seriously... who the fuck are the marketing people for this? They're not letting up on this thing.
Apparently this played the premiere of a show called the Bachelor.

EDIT: Ah... apparently The Bachelor is about one dude being surrounded by a bunch of good looking pussy and he gets to decide who he wants to marry? Hmph. Sounds like an interesting kind of deal for that guy.

Am I on an island here in thinking that Deadpool is kind of a one-joke enterprise and not all that funny? After the novelty of breaking the fourth wall, graphic violence and swearing wears off, I'm not seeing much there that promises an engaging movie-going experience.
I mean I enjoy most comic book movies and agree that this seems to be handled pretty well, given the limitations of the source material. But honestly the way people in this thread are hyping this film like it's the original Avengers trailer or The Dark Knight, well I just don't see it.

Honestly I kind of agree that Deadpool can be a bit of a one note character and I have mixed feelings on him but the trailers are selling the hell out of this film if you ask me.

Find it funny that some people don't quite understand the Deadpool going to hospitals stuff.
Look at the 80s and all the stuff they had Freddy do with the kids!

whoever is in charge of marketing this movie, i must find them and marry them. Dudes, chicks, doesn't matter. single person, multiple people, doesn't matter.
I would pay Fox to actually put posters of that at theaters.
