Re: Star Trek (J.J. Abrams, 2009) — The Reviews Thread
I think you may have missed my point. It was that the changes to the timeline, while widespread in their aftershocks, would not be universal in that regard. For example, the Klingons will still be the Klingons, and I could see the Federation in this new timeline being somewhat more militaristic, more prone to conflict with the Klingons. But what of the Organians? Are they not still out there? And will they still reach a point where they step in and stop the silly children from fighting their war? If not, then why not
Go back and watch the original series sometime. The Klingons appear in the most number of episodes, and it's a lot less than you'd think. The Romulans feature in precisely two episodes. We see two different Andorians, and one of those is in an asylum for the criminally insane. The only other species I can recall appearing twice is an Orion slave girl, and technically the first one we see is just Vina appearing as one in "The Cage." That's it. Every other episode actually showed us "strange, new worlds; new life and new civilization." I don't need to see 2.0 versions of anything I've already seen.
Story-wise, I'll go along with anything as long as it's interesting but, and this is going to sound strange, what I absolutely do not have any interest in is a story about Star Trek. I don't care what 2.0 Organians are like. Their role in the 1.0 time line was to personify MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), the military threat that kept the Cold War cold. They played a role in telling a story about U.S./Soviet relations in the 1960s. If 2.0 Organians are the best way to tell a story about 21st Century international relations, then I'm all for it. But telling a story about them just because they were a memorable species from back when is not, to me, a sufficient reason to build a story around them.

Hey for those of you still wanting to see Star Trek in "IMAX LITE" check your local AMC listings. I'm still seeing it scheduled.
**Not "real" Imax but still, the picture is slightly bigger and better and the sound is awesome.

Just saw it tonight, and I have to say...not all that impressed.
I had pretty high expectations, which were only fueled by the postive reviews. I'm not a Trekkie by any means, but I do like movies, especially II-IV. I even enjoyed The Final Frontier.
The opening scene was great. Very powerful. Sets the story up nicely. Then...it just never recaptures that feeling. The villain was fairly dull, his intentions weren't made clear, the story was kind of convoluted (made worse when Leonard Nimoy shows up to explain what's going on). It was great to see Nimoy back as Spock, but his lengthy explaination was kind of confusing. I do get the jist of it, it just seemed much ado about nothing.
The action was pretty good, and the pace was quick, and in this day and age, I appreciated that there wasn't one eye-rolling moment in the whole film, but that's not enough. Spock and Uhura's relationship was completely undeveloped; nothing is really.
I do have to admit that I was kind of tired when I saw it, but I thought it would be balanced by the fact that I've really wanted to see it.
My rating: **1/2 (out of 4)

Finally got around to seeing this, which is good, because I'm sure had I seen this on its opening weekend then the hype would have lessened my enjoyment of the film. It was good, but nothing really wowed me.
I haven't seen ST: Nemesis for a couple of years, but from my memory of that film, Nero seemed cut from the same cloth as Shinzon. I don't have a particular problem with Nemesis, really; it was a slick entry in the series, just as this one was.
Loved the winks and nods to earlier Trek, particularly the bit with the overzealous red shirt who bites it on the dive to reach and destroy the drill on Vulcan. Although I thought they skimped out on some of the character development of young (kid) Kirk. The whole joyride scene served little other purpose other than him telling us his name. At least young Spock's scene contributed something to his back-story.
Looking forward to the Blu-ray!

I recently read the prequel comic
while it explains some things, and shows us that
Nero's hate of Spock is even less clear than the movie without the back story. He knew Spock was doing all he could and that the Romulan government was to blame for the delay
while it explains some things, and shows us that

In order to revive Khan you HAVE to do Space Seed and have "the Enterprise encounter the Botany Bay, lost in space from the year 1996" over again and remaroon him on Ceti Alpha V before Wrath of Khan can be redone again in this new timeline.
Hopefully Abrams and Co are smart to avoid went on before, I may not have liked the new film but a lot of people did because it started all over and changed the rules of the game through a few key events (death of Kirk's father, destruction of Vulcan), if they simply use it to recycle old plot lines, there is a very serious risk of alienating the fans won over by this film and lastly, who could play Khan half as well as Ricardo did.

Instead of having the Enterprise come across the Botany Bay, the Klingons find it first. And Khan, being the supreme badass he is, takes over the Klingon Empire and then sets his sights on the Federation. So you have Klingons being villains again. Khan is back, and not just in a rehash of Space Seed or Wrath of Khan. Khan and his supermen actually get to lead an Empire full of the galaxy's most hardcore warriors.

How about this:
Instead of having the Enterprise come across the Botany Bay, the Klingons find it first. Khan is back, and not just in a rehash of Space Seed or Wrath of Khan. Khan and his supermen actually get to lead an Empire full of the galaxy's most hardcore warriors.

Agreed. The plot of Star Trek was its weakest element (well that and JJ Abrams obsession with super duper close-ups), and it's a vast universe, they need to come up with something good and original.

I wouldn't mind Khan for JJ's Star Trek 3 or 4... but would agree they need to do some new stuff... or maybe elevate a different character from the original show to something more... Tholians, Harry Mudd, etc. Would love to see a full out Federation v. Gorn battle tho.
