It's early, but there are 6 reviews in on Rotten Tomatoes. 67% so far.

slightly off topic:

Is the new BD release just a rerelease of the original BD w/ a free ticket? Cuz if so...I'll get it...never got MIB...and I enjoy that one a lot too.

I thought Will Smith was the king of July 4th. I guess July nowadays is considered the end of summer.

Re: "Men in Black" gearing up for third edition

The L.A. Times said the total budget, including prints and advertising, is close to $375 million. Yikes. However, they said the film is tracking well here in the US and even higher overseas. I don't know if this will reach $200 mil here, but overseas might bring in quite a bit.

I don't think any of them have much to complain about. Pretty much the only legacy Lost In Space has is that it unseated Titanic. If MiB3 does well, well done.

Titanic spent 16 weeks at #1, The Avengers will do 3. For the sake of your arguement, don't compare the two.

Despite Whedon being the director, wouldn't it be Marvel fans that would be upset?

And since when is MIB a big franchise. Up 'til now there were only two films and the second is almost universally hated. There was an animated series but that's only remembered because it had an episode with almost the same exact plot as the sequel but done better.

As for Will Smith, his star has been fading for quite some time now (which is probably a big part of why he's been busting ass to promote his kids as much as possible).

I doubt the movie will do terribly but I also doubt it'll be much of a hit.

Re: "Men in Black" gearing up for third edition

The MIB franchise has done $1 billion in theatrical release.
Will Smith hasn't headlined a movie in a while but that doesn't mean he's not a star. Here's the grosses of his last 3 movies
- Seven Pounds - $168 mil
- Hancock - $624 mil
- I Am Legend - $585 mil

I was going to post the same thing. His movies do VERY well overseas. The majority of his box office is overseas. People love to focus soley on US box office as a gauge of success. I see MiB3 doing very well.

And 3D seems to be very popular overseas. That will probably give this one a nice bump.

I stand corrected. I didn't realize Hancock and I Am Legend did that well.

In all fairness, I didn't say he wasn't a star. I just said his star was fading. In any case, I was wrong.

That's gotta be better than the second.

I'm expecting this to be good. All 85 minutes of it (or whatever, Sonnefield makes short movies).

Final running time is clocked in at 106 minutes. Longest in the franchise and possibly Sonnenfeld's career.

Re: "Men in Black" gearing up for third edition

The second one really isn't bad at all. It's almost exactly the same as Ghostbusters II in that it doesn't really do anything blatantly wrong but suffers from being a soulless phone-in by pretty much everyone involved.

We've all seen much, much worse sequels than Men in Black II and if you honestly think its one of the worst sequels ever you need to watch more movies.

Glad the reviews are mostly positive so far. Hopefully this will be the sequel the second should have been.

A 106 minute Sonnenfeld movie? That's practically an epic.

No MIB II is that bad... It's doesn't achieve Smokey and the Bandit Pt 3, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles or Beverly Hills Cop 3 suck... But it's close. (And yes, Ghostbusters II is in the same class as MIB II.)

Re: "Men in Black" gearing up for third edition

MIB II was OK. It wasn't as good as the first MIB, and it really did seem like a movie that was just thrown together (one that no one involved really cared all that much about), but it wasn't bad.

It just wasn't very good.

MIB III looks considerably better. We'll see.

Sort of like National Treasure 2. It's a copy of part 1 with everyone involved phoning it in.

Now 16 reviews up, 69% RT. I assumed anything would be better than part 2, but it's good to hear this one is actually entertaining.

I think the thing I'm going to hate the most about MIB III is the fact that Tommy Lee Jones has little more than a cameo...he's supposed to have less screentime than Liam Neeson does in BATTLESHIP.

Re: "Men in Black" gearing up for third edition

I guess since reviews are out.. I can speak more about it. Doesn't seem to be much interest to merit its own reviews thread. And this is more my observations, than a review...

Spoiler:
You get Tommy Lee in about 20 minutes at the front and back end of the movie. And most of the reviews are giving away everything except for the tie in at the end. There's a bit of continuity about K and O and K's other relationships (coming home after his coma in MIB1, did he have any connection to Lauranna in MIB2, and where was O during all this?) that I found confusing. And how does O take over after Zed's death. She wasn't a field agent, she was a secretary! And finally, the ending.. Will Smith kind of gave it away in an interview recently that "while it's a sequel, by the end it's really a prequel." Take off your Back to the Future thinking caps... but when J goes back in time to save K and defeat Boris (both Boris' as there is a Boris #1 and #2. K was able to defeat and imprison Boris #1 back in 1969 and launch the Arcnet to protect Earth. Boris #2 escapes and goes back in time to succeed in killing both K and the Arcnet.) There is an Commander that helps aid Young K and J in their quest to stop the Boris' and he is killed in the line of duty. This turns out to be J's father and J is a witness to all of it and that is how K comes to watch over him. How this ties in to MIB1 with J becoming an NYC policeman and how he is eventually recruited by K doesn't quite fit. But overall, IMO, it's better than the rehash that MIB2 was.
