It's been under the radar, even though it's consistently been chosen by critics and other organizations as BP and Director nominees.

This thread is laughable. What planet are you guys from that you thought TDK was going to get nominated for Best Picture?? I'm not even arguing whether it was deserving or not, but did you seriously expect it to be? I need some of whatever you are smoking.
For the record, I loved TDK.
For the record, I loved TDK.
-It's the 2nd highest grossing film of all-time (non-inflation).
-It will have a Supporting Actor win.
-It's been on several top 10 lists
-It received a Director's Guild nomination
-It received a Producer's Guild nomination
-It received a Writer's Guild nomination
That usually adds up to an Oscar nomination for Picture.

4 of the 5 BP nominees are up for Editing. I don't think that's happened in the last few years. Makes it a tad harder to pick the BP winner.

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.
Disappointments:
1. No Cinematography nomination for THE FALL? What the fuck?
2. The Dark Knight not getting a Best Picture/Best Director nominations?
3. Darren Arronofsky not getting a Best Director nomination?
4. The Wrestler not getting a Best Picture nomination? What the fuck?
5. Sally Hawkins not getting nominated for Best Actress? Are they high?
6. Brad Pitt getting nominated? He did a good job, but not worthy of nomination.
7. Stop nominating Penelope Cruz - she's an awful actress!
8. Not nominating Springsteen for the Wrestler? That song is part of the movie - it ain't just some filler song for the credits.
9. Frost/Nixon nominations? why? It's a fair film.
Happy with:
1. Rourke, Tomei, Brolin, Downey Jr., Shannon, Doubt cast, Henson, and Slumdog nominations

I'll echo this: The Reader is not better than the Dark Knight, no where close. B.S. really.
I'm a minority, I know, but Slumdog Millionaire is over-rated. It didn't move me as others and I think it's merely good, not great. I am rooting for Milk now.

The funny part is that in Spain she's not even considered to be a very good actress. She's been pulling the same shtick of the feisty girl who throws tantrums for who knows how long. If you said Maribel Verdú, now we're talking.

Disappointments:
* No dark Knight Noms for Best Picture and Best Director
*NOTHING for Synecdoche, New York. This should have got Noms for Score, Song ("Little Person"), Actor, and Original Screenplay. FUCK The Slumdog Millionaire "songs". Fuck them hard.
*No technical love for the FALL
* The Love for Frost/Nixon. It wasn't very good and Certainly NOT WORTHY of Best Picture and Best Actor noms.
*No song nom for Springsteen makes these noms look like bullshit. Sound categories have 5 nominees but they only have 3 for Song. WTF!!!!!!?

5) yes, apparently they are
6) I agree
9) have yet to see it, but I felt the same way over 'Benjamin Button' very average - nothing special in my book

In a way, I'm glad that they're now forced to give Winslet the real award this year, instead of throwing her a Supporting win as a career consolation prize (like they did with Blanchett for The Aviator).
Winslet and Ledger are the only two locks in the main categories at this point.

Two questions.
The Reader?
Really?
Well, overall I'm pleased and not terribly surprised. Sure, The Reader and Frost/Nixon are in the Best Picture category, but I take solace in knowing that neither of them will win.
I'm very happy to see In Bruges and Happy Go Lucky nominated. Richard Jenkins and Melissa Leo are probably getting drunk together right now. Michael Shannon's performance was given its due too. Josh Brolin for Milk is nice to see, although I would've given that nod to Emile Hirsch.
The Fall, style over substance though it was, should have been in there for cinematography and costume design.
I am not bitter over The Dark Knight's lack of a best picture nomination. I may get dismissed for saying this, but I think they're waiting for Nolan to make a third before they give him an Oscar for all three, akin to Peter Jackson for the Lord of The Rings trilogy.
And Summit - if you had put any push behind The Brothers Bloom, it could have easily got in there for original screenplay, costume design and a nomination for Rachel Weisz, at least. Let's hope they remember it come next year.

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.
With that said, I'm pretty happy with the list of nominees. Didn't see most of the movies but I am happy with the following:
1. Heath Ledger getting nominated for TDK. Although it isn't a surprise at all.
2. RDJ getting a nod for Tropic Thunder.
3. In Bruges getting a nod for best screenplay. Of the other nominated films in this category, I've only seen Milk. But if In Bruges doesn't win then whoever does must have had one fucking amazing screenplay.
Going to see Benjamin Button this weekend. I still can't belive I haven't gotten out to see that considering that Fincher is one of my favorite directers and this is clearly his biggest film to date.
I'm not surprised to see TDK and Button racking up the technical award nominations either. Not surprised TDK didn't get best picture nomination. After watching it a few more times I've come to realize that it is far and away the best comic book/summer blockbuster I've seen in year. That doesn't mean it is an Academy Award film. If it did get a nod it would be because of the gazillion dollars it made and the fact that the studio was pushing hard for one.

I've said that The Dark Knight was overrated since it came out. It's a very good movie, but it is WAY too flawed to be considered, "Great," and certainly isn't Oscar worthy, IMO. Apparently, the Academy agreed.
It did, however, get all of the technical category nominations that the film deserved. Hell, if any movie deserved a couple more nominations (in the technical categories) it was Iron Man.
You could make an argument that Nolan deserved a nod for direction, but other than that TDK got all the nominations it deserved. Again, IMO. And I have to wonder - If Heath Ledger hadn't died would he have gotten the nomination?

For those complaining about Springsteen getting no nomination for The Wrestler I believe if a song only plays over the end credits it is ineligible.

A song is eligible if it's the first song to play over the end credits, and Springsteen was on the Academy's shortlist for 2008.

He already has an Oscar though. I would've given a nomination to "Dracula's Lament" from Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.
I haven't seen all of the films nominated, but I want to chime in about "Benjamin Button." Wife and I went to see that shortly after it opened, and we both liked it a lot. A few days later, though, we looked at each other and said, "It wasn't that substantive, was it?"
It's nice, it's enjoyable, but there's nothing there that stuck with (for good or ill) in the following days. For me, that's how I judge a movie.

I haven't read the whole thread but I'm sure people are upset over The Reader. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was much better than The Wrestler with which I was mildly disappointed. The only Best Picture nominee I didn't particularly like was Benjamin Button which I think is ridiculously overrated. I'm a big Fincher fan but Seven, Fight Club and Zodiac are far superior.
The other pleasant surprise for me is Richard Jenkins. Marvelous performance. I had thought it had been forgotten, coming so early in the year. Still, I think Langella deserves to win the Oscar.
One more pleasant surprise. Angelina Jolie in the underrated Changeling.
