Shame that Waltz with Bashir didn't get a best Animated nomination. It was in the Best Foreign language category though.

and in the old 28 year old tradition of must be nominated for Best Editing to have a chance to win Best Picture
well 4 out of 5 made it, The Reader has no chance

if slumdog millionaire walks away with both picture and director, i will be satisfied the TDK would have had no chance at winning either of those awards.

Bruce not getting a nod for The Wrestler has to be a typo. They only have 3 songs listed and it's always been 5.
That should easily walk away with the Best Song award. To not even get nominated would be a huge slap in the face.

I think Slumdog is now 100% a lock for the major awards...when I first saw it I didn't love it and said it wouldn't win best picture...I admit now I was wrong (and having seen the film again, I must have been in a bad mood, because it is pretty fucking great).

The Springsteen omission (unless it was omitted on a rules "technicality") is really surprising.
Still eights noms for TDK, six for Wall-E and one for Hertzog is not bad.

The best pic noms are the same as I figured a few months ago, the only exception being Revolutionary Road (Dark Knight would have been a big surprise). Pretty boring/predictable of the academy but it's their awards ceremony.
to Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder, Fincher finally getting a Best Director nod, and In Bruges not getting completely shut out.
Wanted has two nominations (Sound Mixing/Editing) haha

No need to watch the Oscars now - Slumdog Millionaire is all but a lock for Best Picture.
Both Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon are highly overrated...it's hard to believe they got Best Picture nods and The Dark Knight didn't. All the subpar movies Oscar has voted as Best Picture over the years and The Dark Knight (still 2008's best film, "superhero movie" or not) can't even get a nomination? Total BS.
And as much as I loved The Wrestler, Marissa Tomei didn't do much in that movie but take her top off - hopefully the presenter won't read the wrong name again.
Best Actor is the only real "race" here: Sean Penn vs. Mickey Rourke. Maybe they can just box for it.

Well, Dark Knight cleaned up in technical categories. Surprised to see Benjamin Button nominated for makeup since use of CGI make-up disqualifies the picture from the category (see The Hours). DK will probably clean up the scientific ones (both sounds and visual effects.
Eastwood should have been nominated for best actor over the sleepwalking performance of Brad Pitt or Langella's Nixon. I actually would have preferred a nom for Michael Sheen as Frost.
Interesting to see there's only 3 nominees for Best Song this year, with 2 coming from Slumdog. Seems like they just wanted to pad out Slumdog's nom count more than anything. Why not get the obligatory five by adding Springsteen's "The Wrestler," Wanted's "The Little Things," Bond's "Another Way to Die," or heck, even something from one of the musicals of the year.

It is a shame about Springsteen being slighted. I wonder if it was ineligible for some reason.

Bruce Springsteen and 'The Wrestler' not being nominated is a fucking joke.

I did, it was alright but had some pretty bad lulls in it and was really damn hard to buy into. I sort of have to side with a majority of the critics on this one (currently stands at a 60% on rottentomatoes), complete oscar bait (and it worked). Wasn't bad, just wasn't very good, Winslet, however, was great.

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.
Surprises of the morning:
- The Dark Knight received 8 nominations, but not for Screenplay, Director, or Picture.
- The Reader for Picture and Director.
- No Winslet in Supporting - Penelope Cruz is happy this morning.
- Winslet for The Reader in lead instead of Revolutionary Road.
- Melissa Leo taking Sally Hawkins' spot. Hawkins took most of the critics' awards this year - more than anyone in any category, probably.
- Richard Jenkins instead of Eastwood or DiCaprio. Proud of the acting branch this year for nominating performances from small movies (Jenkins, Leo) rather than the biggies.
- ZERO nominations for Gran Torino.

To be honest the only reason I've really ever liked the Oscars is because first day of Spring use to be like a week away from it. This is before they shortened the voting. Now I don't care.

Of course they should nominate the best movies. But that's what's so frustrating about this year. Mainstream, blockbuster flicks like The Dark Knight, Wall-E, and even Iron Man to a lesser extent got great reviews and were all huge hits in theaters and on DVD/Blu-ray. Any one of those could've been given a Best Picture nod and I don't think even the most uptight of critics would've cried foul.

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.
This is a 2 film race, between Benjamin Button and Slumdog, with maybe Milk as a spoiler. However, I'm going with Button since it has the most nominations (13) and it received 2 acting nominations. Slumdog received 0. How often does a movie win Best Picture without getting an acting nomination?
Also, Doubt received 4 acting nominations and a screenplay nomination, but failed to get a Picture nomination. That has to be a first, right?

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.
To be fair, IFC Films pretty much destroyed the movie in America with its wacky release pattern. The weird roadshow-esque release, followed by it being cut into two and shown on PPV took it off everyone's radar. Heck, the film's U.S. website is on the second page if you Google "che film." It was supposed to open wider this month, but the official site has no listings when you click on that link.
