Paramount's estimates for the film were 50-60, so 76.5 is ridiculously good. There seem to be strong word-of-mouth and teens/women demographics as well.

I don't know if it'll be able to beat Angel & Demons next weekend (actually there's probably no chance), but it's not going to have the huge dropoff that Wolverine had.

Not to downplay the IMAX take, but I suspect the total benefited from the shorter run time (which, of course, allowed for a few more showings in the same time frame as The Dark Knight). Still, an impressive figure by any measure.

I figured it was that (maybe 1 extra showing a day) and more IMAX screens. TDK brought upon a rush to get IMAX theaters installed, we got 2 shortly after TDK ended.

I'm not sure about theater count. I know The Dark Knight opened in IMAX in Louisville, but I couldn't find an IMAX showing of Star Trek. Maybe I misunderstood the web information, but the only IMAX showing I found in all of Kentucky was in Newport, across the river from Cincinnati. (If anyone knows different, I'd love to see it in IMAX and would appreciate being wrong about this!)

I wouldnt call this film a great or good sci fi film eventhough its going to be labeled as a sci fi flick. Its just a great action movie in space, just like serenity or star wars. The Fountain & Watchmen stand out better as real sci fi. Just because time travel is used, it doesnt make it great sci fi. I love the terminator movies, but i dont think of them as great sci fi. Star trek was good but its just an action movie with nothing to think about. There was nothing interesting about the black hole time traveling or alternate realities in the way it was presented by Abrams.

How is The Fountain even considered Scifi?

The Fountain is as science fictiony as a movie can get. Did you see the movie? I'm confused how it can not be considered sci-fi...

Yes, I've seen the movie and from what I could tell
Spoiler:
It was about a woman dying of cancer who was writing a book, she dies and her husband finishes it. The story they write has some nice emotional touches explaining their love for each other.

There's really no science in it, her story occured in 1500 AD and discussed a person being reborn as a tree. He finishes the story a thousand years later symbolizing their love is forever.

If you're talking about him traveling by spaceship to her space bubble, that came off as an afterthought. Though it did have some Alex Grey-ish trancendental-style effect work.

I don't see how that is Sci-fi. But whatever, different thread.

Actually The Terminator series (especially the first two) is to date the most effective demonstration of the Singularity* on film.

*The Singularity in this case referring to the point where A.I. develops its own consciousness, not a black hole.

or 2001 A Space Odyssey and Westworld...All the "A.I. develops its own consciousness" movies always make the A.I. so smart. I'm still waiting for an "A.I. developing its own consciousness" character that acts pretty stupid and predictable (as in video game A.I.). It would be like a robot zombie (slow retard zombies, not the fast "28 Days Later" zombies) movie I guess...

Dude! I would totally watch that movie! It'd be like the A.I. version of Shaun of the Dead!

If there is outerspace, time jumps, rebirth and other crazy visual shit, you're pretty much dealing with sci-fi - even if it's got more complex human themes etc. I can see what you're saying about The Fountain, but I would never consider it 'not sci-fi'.

I see your point, but I think "The Fountain" leans more towards Fantasy with some Sci Fi elements.

Just because it has "crazy visual shit" doesn't make it science fiction.

Take Star Wars. Light sabers. Spaceships. Outerspace. Not science fiction.

I agree with you. It would be placed in the "science fiction section of a video store", but actually there is nothing really science-fictiony about these films. It's just a soap opera in space with amazing technology. The only science fictiony things would be the force or the midi-clorines, but Lucas doesn't develop the storyline around those two ideas. He just says they have the force because of midi-chlorines and that's that. Jedis and Sith just have superpowers, just like superheroes. I wouldn't traditionally call Spiderman or Superman sci-fi flicks - they would be traditionally called Fantasy flicks I guess...The more there is to think about and analyze, the more likely it's a sci-fi flick. That's how I label the difference between sci-fi and fantasy. The Fountain, 12 Monkeys, Equilibruim, Avalon, Battle Royale, Matrix Trilogy, Gattaca, Aeon Flux, 13th Floor, V for Vendetta, Wall-E, Dark City, Mindgame, Donnie Darko are examples of good and/or entertaining sci-fi in the past 15 years...sure anything can be analyzed, but come on, we all know that there is nothing deep about Star Wars - watch Chasing Amy for the good analysis of that film (between Banky and Hooper X)...

In the new Star Trek film, what is this red matter sphere? I know what it does, but what's the story behind it?

Shallow question.
I didn't see that Doira Baird anywhere. Rachal Nichols was the one who shared the room with Uhura.
Anyone know the scene she is in as I'm seeing this again tomorrow.

I don't get The Fountain or Battle Royale being on that list, but the others all fit. Yeah I'm going to keep arguing The Fountain, it was a story within a story dammit! Then again, my favorite Sci-fi flick of the last decade is still Minority Report.

Another JJ Abrahms Recruit. She was in the last two years of Alias. We also get a Felcity Recruit, Amanda Foreman on the bridge and I hear Gruberg was heard but not seen.

I would totally classify Star Trek as a Sci Fi film.

Did anybody already mention a black hole opened just outside of earth would have destroyed the planet and the solar system yet?

Not that I give a damn I really liked this movie.

But talk about a plot hole.

It wasn't just outside of Earth. The Jellyfish warped away and Nero followed. Who knows where they were.

Just watched that sequence again, I must have doing something and listening during that 'Well warp after him!" thing.

Scrub the plot hole I mistakenly noticed.

So the Enterprise warped in just in time.

I've got it now.
