Actually the movie was made for fans of the older ones, just not necessarily the die hards, there is a pretty big difference.
I think Gene would be happy with it if he was happy with TOS in the least. They have a lot in common.
But even considering that, the movie was still extremely entertaining.

There's something immensely ironic about Star Trek fans who won't open their minds to the possibilities of a new timeline/whatever and rejecting the new film without even watching it. It's almost like you watched the television series for years but completely missed the message.

Saw this today. I'm not a Star Trek fan (SW geek myself), but I am a JJ Abrams fan and my dad is a Star Trek fan, so I thought it would be fun to see this movie. I was not disappointed. Pretty good movie.
I liked:
plot. I'm a sucker for them.
And it has probably been mentioned before (haven't read the whole thread), but that snow scene:
and I just realized this wasn't the reviews thread. oops.

Geez, if you think some of the squabbling on this forum over this movie is snarky, you ought to check out the startrek.com message boards and the pissing match I found myself in with David Mack over whether or not Star Trek Countdown is canonical.
My argument is 1) the story was originated by Orci & Kurtzman and 2) its content was validated on-screen in the movie. His counter is that CBS Paramount owns the franchise and their policy is anything not on-screen is not canon, and that it's not up to fans to decide what matters.
I grant that CBS Paramount owns the franchise and they may have a policy which bars writers from contradicting things established on screen and not guaranteeing that anything they write will be respected by anyone else; canon, though, is an evolving thing determined by what is kept and what is discarded from everything available. And, yes, fan reaction has helped shape canon over the years, whether Mack can pull his head out of his ass long enough to admit or not.
Sorry for the only vaguely on topic rant, but I forget how less friendly and cooperative posters on nearly every other message board can be. I really do love the DVD Talk community. At least here, I can have a rational debate about something without being told that since I'm not a professional writer nothing I think means squat.
(The fact that I don't worship Blu Ray is why nothing I think means squat here!)

I went over to HTF to see what they were saying about it. Some of those guys had the most ridiculous reasons for hating it I have ever seen. Some of them were downright absurd and called it something on the level of a direct to DVD film!

Personally if it wasn't in the TV or the films, in the case of ST, it doesn't matter. Same goes for Star Wars...only the films and as of now the the Clones cartoons are canon. Where do people bring up all this weird shit up? The books? like they mattered?

That was one guy, most of them seemed to be on the same lovefest as all these other forums.

There was also a post made in the Blu-ray boxset thread about the new movie. I felt it was way less than a love fest over there than here. We aren't getting the extreme posts like that. Just the troll and go statement by uh . . . someone.

Has anyone brought up how the general plot for this Strar Trek movie has a lot in common with Lost?
Just thought it was interesting since they're both JJ Abrams productions.

Both deal with time travel... thats about it... However, Lost's version is drastically different.

urban's "mccoy" was the best thing about this reboot. pegg however was so overdone and over-acted that he didn't get many laughs in my theater. he was the weakest link in the film, besides all the plot mishaps. i still find it funny that "ambassador spock" was the only one that was sent to save the romulan race. whatever. oh, and the "let's forget about going back in time to make things right... because we can....let's just get revenge instead" mantra. the nero character was as one-dimensional as a villain can get.

^ funny I thought Pegg was the only one perfectly cast, but was underused. I think McCoy is such a great character, anyone would have received kudos for playing him...
Oh yeah, the lens flares were one of the few things I really liked about the film.

He wasn't sent - he was already there. Spock was the Federation Ambassador to Romulus, so logically (pardon the pun) he'd be the man to head-up any attempt to save the planet.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movi....ew/index.html
J.J. Abrams' franchise reboot boldly went where no Star Trek movie has gone before, grossing a stellar $72.5 million from Friday through Sunday, according to early estimates by Hollywood.com Box Office.
That's the second-best opening of 2009 (after X-Men Origins: Wolverine's $85.1 million last weekend), and it includes a whopping $8.2 million earned in IMAX showings, a new one-weekend record for the large format (beating The Dark Knight's $6.3 million).
What's more, if you add in the $4 million that the movie starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto earned in late-Thursday showings, Star Trek has banked an impressive $76.5 million so far -- well ahead of most expectations.

The plot is basically a big screen version of the ST: Voyager episode "Year of Hell" if you ask me.

Re: Star Trek XI (Abrams, 2009) - Part 2
I saw my first IMAX movie (at least the first that I can recall) and the honor went to Star Trek. I loved every single moment of this movie, every special effect, every character, the romance between Spock and Uhuru and while I thought Chris Pine was questionable, I even enjoyed his take on Kirk. *****/***** and I'm very tempted to go and see it again. The quality of the audio and video was amazing, it definitely enhanced my theatre experience and I rarely visit theatres anymore.
I don't consider myself a diehard Star Trek fan.
