I reading the series right now. I am almost through the second book "New Moon". It is definitely a page turner. I disagree with Lizard saying that the book isn't about vampires -- it is a romance. The book does have quite a bit of romance, but don't let that scare you away. They are vampire books, and it extends out a little more but I will not spoil it for you.
I am a 30 year old male and I am really digging the series so far.

Just caught this via Netflix and I thought it was pretty terrible. Now I know I'm not it's target audience. But still. I've never seen so much preening and posing in one movie in my entire life. The acting and script were also bad. I haven't read any of the books. Are they geared for younger people only too? Or can both young and old get something out of it, like the "Harry Potter" books?

The acting was fine, I just thought the ending was horribly rushed, and some of the effects were made on the cheap (though this made the film amazingly profitable). The Cullens are barely in this compared to the book. I hope Chris Weitz brings something to the sequel. I really liked The Golden Compass.

None of the actors were ever going to get an Oscar nomination for Twilight, but I didn't think anybody was terrible. I thought the film wasn't going for anyone being too over the top except maybe the James character. A lot of the characters were underdevelped, the last half of the movie just doesn't gel very well, leaving little suspense. They tried to turn the movie into an action flick at the end, and it just didn't work.

I haven't seen this film, nor have I read the books (and I don't intend to read them) but I must say, seeing all the posters, T-shirts and other stuff about this film makes me feel old, because it's essentially a successor to Buffy and Angel. I doubt it's nearly as good, but it's certainly a successor to whole young adult vampire genre.

Man, i fucking hated this. So much so that i actually turned it off after an hour. I thought the acting (especially from the 2 leads) was really bad. It came off as really stiff and even bored. I think i turned it off after the scene where Edward gives that long speech about being a vamprie and with endless shots of them looking at each other. Combine that with really bad effects, poor editing, and a sense that i have seen this done much better (True Blood and Buffy/Angel), i just about had had enough by that point.

Finally saw this at the bargain theater. Having read the book prior, I will say the script is very good, in that it manages to condense Meyer's sprawling mess of a book into something that more or less works. Some things were unavoidable... the 'plan' at the end of the book is still completely stupid, but the screenwriters were smart to amp up the action and show the confrontation (where Meyer simply dodged the whole climax of her own story).
The main problem with the film version is that the fx and many of Hardwicke's decisions were failures in their own right... the supposed 'wow' moments (the sunny sparkle, the superhuman powers) weren't just anticlimactic; they came off as silly.
So while the film improves on a lot of the book's problems, it creates several new problems of its own.

Funny how I started this thread. I've never read the books. Saw the film this weekend because it was a free rental.
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really that good either. I thought all of the actors/actresses were good and (seemed?) to fit their parts. However, everything just felt so slow and flat. I didn't feel like I was watching a hollywood product until about 1.5 hours in. I felt like both the leads had good chemistry with each other, but it's as if somebody didn't know how to capture it. Ashame too, because I think everybody involved seemed like they were trying to do their best, aside from the director.

Yeah, i thought that part (when he goes into the sunlight, and it glitters) was just plain stupid (and either the transfer of the dvd was that bad, or i was half falling asleep), i honstly said out loud "he looks exactly the same", then i saw little sparkle thingys. Another problem i had to, is that he has no problem with being out in overcast days, when isnt' vampire myth that any major light period bothers them

I guess not, The teen-tween fanbase is REALLY into this. It is quite insane.
For example, Peter Facillineli (Plays the dad vampire), had a signing for the dvd at Fort Lewis on Saturday, and he signed everything/took pictures from 9:30 am to 10:30pm. He did not stop once. He even cancelled his flight, because he did not want to stop until everyone that was there got something signed.
It was pretty crazy from the pictures I have seen.

Speaking as an older male, I read and enjoyed it (and have also listened to the audio book version — terrific narrator, by the way). But I read a LOT of fantasy and really like romance, in contrast to many here who denigrate such things as "chick flicks" or "chick lit" (my favorite book, by far, is Pride and Prejudice, the greatest romance ever written).

Yeah have to chime in as another adult male who enjoyed the series... But again, I can see why many don't. They are expecting one thing, and got something else. This is for a specific audience and there happen to be some of us who fall outside of that group, but on this board especially, its going to get more of a backlash.
