I was in rapt attention and found it very difficult to understand most of what Bane said. I would assume at least some of his lines are important. At first I thought it was me, but for the most part my group was in agreement, some getting more the others less.

That didn't completely stop me from enjoying the prologue though. If Nolan wants to add some legit subtitles, that will be cool. ;)

when have you ever seen A Dick Sprang style Batman movie? The TV show came close to that style, but no one has ever seen one made with a substantial budget and state of the art technology.
After seeing Nolans first two films, I don't think Batman exists well in a recognizable, realistic universe. I think the character needs a stylized backdrop not to call attention to the properties innate absurdities.

Burton presented a sufficiently stylized universe. However what he continually failed to do was to present an engaging three act story with interesting and sympathetic characters. The plays the thing. I may have issues with a lot of the details in the films, but Nolan has made what are overall very engaging films. Even I don't dispute that. I think the same could be done with a vastly different sensibility- maybe even more successfully as the surreality of the style might suit the premise better.

It's not the clearest dialogue, just like how the action in Batman Begins was really cluttered. Hopefully it's addressed...

Yep. I actually just picked up that one last week in the clearance aisle at HalfPrice Books for $2.
Not a bad book at all.

What about Batman and Robin and Batman Forever?

I used to think the problem with those movies was that they were just too over-the-top and poorly executed, but I think the concept from the very beginning was flawed. I did like the Brave and the Bold TV series, but I don't think that kind of movie can work.

I thought an urban crime drama with Batman worked wonderfully, although he was somewhat sidelined in that movie.

It's the evolution of the character. Dick Tracy was a great movie because that character's sensibilities never evolved out of the pulp fiction era, but Batman has transcended that.

I agree there are definitely some Sprang era influences and flourishes on display in the Schumacher movies(the helicopter going through the Occular neon sign still makes me smile as that is very much a shout out to that era). The problem is his movies suck on a tonal level. They have the benefit of big budgets, but there's a winking insincerity to them that's fatal. Not to mention the dialogue is frequently insipid and witless.

The more I think about it, the Sprang era material already has been done in live action. That's exactly what the Adam West show was. In fact, some of the episodes were near literal adaptions of a few stories. That's also the kind of surreality I was alluding to- where a guy can walk around in an outlandish costume and interact with various people and they all take it in an unblinking, matter of fact way. To me, it works in that universe and context. I have a much harder time buying it in Nolan's deadly serious mirror reality.
In addition you have reliable supporting players like Neil Hamilton that shade their delivery with just the right amount of hyperbolic conviction. Out of context it's silly, over the top, and campy. In the context of the show as it's unfolding, that tone is seamless and appropriate.

Just imagine the TV show with a real mega-million dollar budget, spectacular production design, state of the art special effects, and directed by someone with a grand visual sense. I would love to see something like that- although the shows biggest asset, Adam West, would be just about impossible to replace or replicate. He doesn't get enough credit for his performance. Aside from the Batman-voice, I do like a lot of things about Bale. But in most ways Adam West remains the definitive Batman/Bruce Wayne to me. At least I'll always believe that he believed he was that character.

The reason why Brave and the Bold works is that it's little doses here. And it's a pretty shallow show to boot.

The action in Begins was a flurry, but I didn't mind. The physicality of the fight scenes kind of spoke for themselves, whereas I'm concerned I'll miss out on important information if I can't understand Bane.

CIA dude asks Bane what would happen if he took off his face mask and he responded, "It would be painful." I was thinking, "Yeah, I bet that would be very painful, he needs it." My brother later pointed out that he added, "To you." Duh. I missed that bit and it totally changed the meaning behind that line.

But I still loved every second of it and really liked Hardy's accent. I trust Nolan will work everything out.

I didn't have an issue understanding Bane in the prologue bootleg I watched, but I definitely prefer his voice from the trailer. Of course, it very well could be the same since the audio of the bootleg is subpar.
Anyone else notice in the prologue that

the plane being suspended has the designation "8AN-82", but with the given view I read it as "BANE".

Nothing major, but didn't notice mention of it elsewhere.

Judging from the trailers, I think I have a solid guess at how this will go down.

We see Bruce with a cane in various scenes that must take place in the first act, namely the masquerade ball and interacting with Miranda and Selina. We also see him on a patio above the ceremony for Dent. This all presumably takes place before he fights Bane.

So, it seems to me that Bruce hurts himself fighting some thugs or other character prior to meeting Bane. This sets the tone for him being older, not as quick/strong, being weary of the suit, etc. He decides he wants to ease into his retirement and settle down. Enter Bane. Bruce has no choice but to face him, and Bane easily exposes Bruce's weakness and severely injures him. Bruce becomes imprisoned. We've seen the short teaser shot of Bruce doing pushups in the prison. We've also seen the trailer shot of Bruce in the prison appearing to walk without a cane.

So, for whatever reason he escapes the prison reinvigorated and returned to full strength. The Dark Knight rises, defeats Bane, and saves Gotham.

Are we sure that's Bruce with a cane? We see a figure walking up to some dishes and we barely catche a glimpse at his reflection. It's also a poorly kept secret that

In the brief shot of Marion Cotillard moving the mask from her face at that ball, there's a follow-up to that where you see Bruce standing in front of her and he is clearly leaning on a cane.

This got me thinking...maybe it starts out the way you describe and the audience is wondering how he got injured. Flash back to Bane breaking his back. Then fast forward as he fights Bane again and saves Gotham.

I got the idea because Nolan likes to do flashbacks.

Bane works with the LOS,but isn't an actual member...he and his group of mercenaries are hired by the League to take down Gotham....

Miranda Tate is 100% Talia Al Ghul....she serves as a bit of a love interest,gaining Bruce's ear and being a shoulder to cry on for him,then betrays him....

the poster is literally a scene from the film...the first big fight between Bane and Batman takes place in the sewers under the foootball field Bane blows up....Batman is beaten,defeated,but his back isn't broken...Bane rips part of his mask off and knocks him unconscious,then drops the mask to the ground and walks away,leaving his henchmen to take Batman away...but Bruce IS beaten severely enough to need a cane to walk when he returns...

Bane reveals it was Harvey Dent who killed all those people,and Batman and Gordon covered it up,leading the citizens to riot...

Bane has control of Gotham due to the device he used to destroy the football field...he announces his plan to use it to level all of Gotham if the National Guard enters the city,hence his ability to control it...

it's revealed Bane was rescued from a fire as a child by Ra's al Ghul...he was horribly scarred and his lungs were permanently damaged,hence the need for the mask which helps him breathe but also gives him a form of Venom that kills the paralyzing pain he would feel from his injuries...

Catwoman/Selina's background and story is quite similar to the Year One version....

the final battle takes place in the Batcave,with both a maskless Bruce and maskless Bane going at it...in the end,they both die....sort of....we then get a montage that explains that to the world Bruce Wayne is dead - there's even a tombstone placed in the Wayne cemetary next to his parents - but Batman still lurks above the streets of Gotham...so it implies Bruce Wayne is gone,and only the Batman remains from that point foward...

That's kind of a downbeat ending for Bruce, sucks to be him. That also leaves it open for more movies, which seems kind of like a sellout.
