at this rate, and my busy schedule I don't think, I'll get to see this in IMAX until mid August (hopefully Udvar Hazy won't book Fly Me to the Moon), with the sell outs and trying to get a third friend to join me - seeing this has gotten ridiculous.

Does anyone know the IMAX gross so far?

Yeah, I just ordered tickets for 8/2 @ 5:30 @ Udvar Hazy for my wife & I and another couple. Wanted to go this weekend, but I snoozed & lost.

Not seeing it on a regular screen until this weekend, but IMAX was spectacular.

IMAX was great. The shifting aspect ratio was a bit distracting, though.

The first one was definitely distracting, but i found myself getting used to it and not even noticing it by the end.

Agreed, it threw a lot of people out of the movie for a few moments, but by the second time it happened it was practically seamless.

Weird, I didn't notice the shift at all... I think my theater only had a black bar at the bottom though, so the image was just shifted up instead of being in the middle of the huge IMAX screen

The shift is pretty noticeable, especially when the image is going from 2.40:1 to 1.37:1. Not only that, the IMAX scenes were much clearer and crisp than the 35mm footage.

I loved the IMAX screen myself. But I did have a friend who said he got a headache from the big view, though that may have been because he had to sit closer to the screen because of the big crowds.

Yeah, IMAX is terrible for me if you're stuck in the first few rows. Makes the experience practically dreadful, as far as I'm concerned. I've gotten stuck sitting fairly close for Batman Begins, and it was bad. I've had great experiences for Harry Potter, Matrix Revolutions, and I Am Legend.

I found the shift distracting in a "holy crap" kind of way

well yeah, those were scope films (2.35) the image was in the middle of the screen with black bars below and above the image. A film taking up the whole IMAX screen will result in a terrible vantage point when you're sitting very close to the screen.

Anyone?

Uh... my point is that sitting in the first few rows sucks regardless of the aspect ratio. Like I said, Batman Begins, a 2:35 film, was terrible as well from the first few rows.

According to wiki, a standard IMAX screen is 72.6 ft x 52.8 ft... or roughly 3833 sq ft. So yours is a tad bit smaller.

Was I the only one annoyed by the fish-eye effect of the concave imax screens? It made the skyscrapers look wobbly.

I'd vote for regular theatrical showing.
I guess you can call me old fashioned but I dont buy into a few things: 3D movies, Imax screens and HD.
If its not broke dont fix it would be my motto and as far as I am concerned 2D movies, Regular theater screens and standard def TV/DVD works beautifully for me.

The dome IMAX screens are generally pretty terrible for movies. I won't pay to see movie movies on them.

I actually really hate "regular theater screens" anymore. Well, not the screens so much, just reel projection. So many issues (sound problems, reel change problems, cigarette burns, projector problems, etc; ), DLP/Digital Projection is definitely the way to go.

IMAX is absolutely beautiful on the right screens (read: not the domes) but is a luxary, 3D has a long way to go still (even the new ones use shades that kill the color, cool 3d effects, but I need color dammit), but I heart HD (SD looks pretty awful at 106").

Have you SEEN Dark Knight in IMAX?

Nope. And i dont ever plan on it. Going to see The Dark KNight again this weekend but again it will be on a "regular" screen.
Imax means nothing to me. It isnt worth more than a quarter more in price than a "regular" screen. And even if they were the same price I'd still probably prefer a "regular" screen. I like movies wide and prefer WIDE over TALL

You do realize it's just as Wide, right? Just extra information added to the tops and bottom (and hugely inreased clarity). But understandably, it makes it less like watching a movie and more like looking out the worlds biggest window.

For the IMAX showings, when the film is not being shown in IMAX, does the size of the screen shrink to the standard movie screen size? Also, when it is in non-IMAX mode, is the picture still much clearer than a non-IMAX theatre?

How old are you? 85??

Or are you just still watching a 19" TV?

Or maybe you're just trolling for attention. (most likely)

DVD : Blu-ray :: VHS : DVD

Seriously, get with the times. You might as well still be watching B&W TV or movies on VHS. It makes no sense.

You're missing A LOT if you're not seeing The Dark Knight on IMAX
