No I'm not. I'm stating why many people dislike Spielberg's films, and saying that it's a perfectly justifiable position that doesn't merit your, "Ew, people don't love E.T.? I've lost faith in humanity."

I guess you hate musicals too.

Never seen the whole thing, watched about 20 minutes of it on cable once but had to change it for fear of choking on my own vomit coming up from the overtly sugary-sweet tripe coming out of my TV. I utterly loathe Tom Hanks, I find a kidney stone more entertaining than him on screen.

How about The Iron Giant, not counting people that have to act like anything animated is so far beneath them & too childish for their sophistication.

How on earth can anyone say this is a bad movie & or not like it? This has to be the movie the movie that every man can agree on.

What about The Karate Kid? That movie is potentially a direct result of millions of people waxing their car in a very idiotic fashion.

That reminds me of a few Netflix reviews where the person will rate a film one star after admitting to only seeing the first 20 or so minutes. How can you give a valid opinion of a film you've viewed less than half of? Watch it "Clockwork Orange" style if need be and stick it out till the *bloody end!

Spoiler:
He was of Turkish decent and she wasn't deceased. It was a side effect from the rohypnol he slipped in her tea earlier as she was closing up the diner.

I assumed it had universal appeal and even satisfied people like me who usually detest romantic comedies. Guess I wrong.

*Bloody - Slang term from the UK used as an intensifier.

Absolutely. Movie-making is about manipulating the audience into a desired emotion. Pretty much all performing arts (music, theater, speeches, etc.) are the same.

But Spielberg likes using a heavy-handed approach that pulls me out of the story and makes me notice the mechanics of the movie. It's like watching a bad sitcom that uses a big laugh track to try to get you to laugh at unfunny material. You notice the laugh track. E.T. has pretty good material, but Spielberg takes me out of it by using a billyclub when he ought to be taking me by the hand and saying, "Look! Isn't this wonderful?"

an example would be nice. all I hear is his use of big music and the fact that kids cried in the movie are what people have a problem with. sorry if I find such criticisms to be utterly ridiculous, considering the fact that it's explained in a way that is completely out of context, as if those things shouldn't be in the movie.

how should the movie have gone?

I didn't particularly care for Amelie, but calling it xenophobic, racist bullshit is bullshit. But, I guess an opinion is an opinion.

Spielberg choosing to do Schindler's List in black and white is a huge example.

Bump...after reading through this nobody disagreed with these choices...

- Back To The Future
- The Thing

I don't think The Thing would do well with those who are not big on gore, Kurt Russell's universal appeal be damned.

How about Breaking Away?

Six pages and I don't recall seeing "Office Space" once. I seriously have not talked to anyone offline who didn't love that film. Also, how about "Young Frankenstein"?

More recently, I know only one person who didn't like The Dark Knight, and his complaint was that it was too real. This is especially odd as I have another friend who likes Batman and Batman Returns more than Batman Begins, and yet he said after seeing Dark Knight it was better than the former two combined.

Gotta respond to this: I'd agree, but the ending shot completely undermines the entire movie, so it drops a few points for me.

It's a foreign film and a musical, which is probably two quick strikes against it for many folks, but as far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Maybe it's only everyone in France who loves it.

How am I obsessed? Nobody in this very thread said they didn't like it. That's all I was pointing out, lol.

I don't like The Iron Giant, BTW, so throw that option out the window. What about Groundhog Day? Ghostbusters? Most like those movies.
