Best Chick Flick?

I'm looking for a movie to watch with the lady friend. Obviously, I'm trying to trick her into getting into the mood and then yada yada yada. Kidding...sort of.

Anyway, I'm looking for a modern movie--probably 80's and later. I don't have any problem with older movies but she's not really into older stuff. She did say that she wanted to watch Casablanca though because she's never seen it. Something romantic, preferably with a happy ending. You know...just something that women like. Any suggestions?

Other than musicals I haven't liked most of the recent ones, although About a Boy is really good if that counts. I've heard that Love, Actually is supposed to be good, but I haven't seen that one.

If you can wait until February 5th, Across the Universe comes out, which I loved (but be aware it gets trippy at times).

Damed 01-21-08 02:07 AM

The Notebook.

Rypro 525 01-21-08 02:55 AM

Cannibal Holocoust
Irreversible

she'll love them.

toddly6666 01-21-08 03:18 AM

Actually, Irreversible has a happy ending, just not a happy beginning...;)
Try Seven, Requiem for a Dream as well...

On a serious note, I would watch Amelie with her...Casablanca is a good movie for sleeping together - in which you both want to fall asleep, watching some corny, boring old movie....

hardercore 01-21-08 03:41 AM

I agree with Amelie. It lights up everyone I've seen it with, it's quirky but still quintessentially romantic, and if you haven't seen it yourself you'll have a great experience watching it too.

I knew someone would propose something like this. That's cruel. But damn funny to see the girl's reaction rotfl

Ginwen 01-21-08 04:04 AM

Amelie is excellent, although I wouldn't say it's a chick flick.

A lot of the Hugh Grant ones--About a Boy, Four Weddings and a Funeral and even Notting Hill (in spite of the one overplayed scene), are really good IMO.

toddly6666 01-21-08 04:34 AM

For getting to first base, rent the Notebook
For second base, rent Amelie
For Oral, rent Brown Bunny
For penetration, rent Short Bus
For threesome, rent Ken Park

you'd have to go region free for that one.

And you still want to fuck her?

Man points = +10
DVDTALK Movie Snob points = -5 -ohbfrank- **

**Only -5 on the DVDTSP because she's willing to see Casablanca. Otherwise you'd get a -10

Screw the Lakehouse, get the original Il Mare. Then again, there aren't any "good" quality releases. Then again, I don't know what I'm doing in this thread ...

BTW whoop - are you region free?

rw2516 01-21-08 08:49 AM

Buster and Billie. Played for years at the drive-in. Took about six chicks(not at the same time) to see it and scored everytime. Still waiting for the dvd.

Nope not region free. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I've never actually seen Amelie but I've heard it's very good. I don't want to lose anymore dvd talk snob points but I don't know how she'd react to a movie with subtitles either. I know I know.

RichC2 01-21-08 09:29 AM

Some good chick Flick/Romance flicks:

Titanic, Amelie, The Notebook, Juno, Pride and Prejudice (Kiera Knightly), Ghost, Love Actually, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Princess Bride (slightly older), About A Boy, High Fidelity, Fever Pitch, Bridget Jones's Diary, Match Point (Yeaaah - great flick but proceed with caution on that one), Music and Lyrics (haven't seen), and Garden State

taa455 01-21-08 10:01 AM

"Hitch" is good for both laughs and romance.

toddly6666 01-21-08 10:08 AM

There is no way that she will want to watch Casablanca. She will want to stop the movie after 5 minutes and rather mess around with you.... Tommy, I'm sorry but this movie sucks and is dated. It might have been good, but not anymore...

Is she a "I don't feel like reading a movie" type of person? It would be a shame to not watch this because Amelie is one of the best films ever for anyone and for any purpose. It certainly makes more sense to rent Amelie with her than by yourself. So just tell her that you have been wanting to see it and let her watch it with you. Amelie is NOT a flick for chicks, it's for everyone.

The Adam Sandler Chuck & Larry movie was probably the best and funniest Hollywood movie I saw last year. It's pretty romantic...

dick_grayson 01-21-08 10:16 AM

Medicine Man
The Fabulous Baker Boys
Sgt. Bilko
Eddie and the Cruisers
The Money Pit
American History X
