In the shitty romcom category, I've always liked French Kiss. It outperforms its genre.

Also, About a Boy is sort of a chick flick, but not really.

Chick flick to me is a light and airy comedy centering around a couple, possibly a love triangle, and how they find love amidst difficult but funny circumstances. It must be comedic (as a goal at least), it must have a happy ending, it must not make you think. It is usually insipidly mainstream and non-offensive.

For example, About a Boy does not fit these categories but it is a movie that girls like. You've Got Mail fits these categories and is a shitty movie. Bringing Up Baby fits these categories and is a great movie.

I must get more sophisticated women and friends as the second they see sub-titles they want to watch something else.

Ditto, I always know a relationship isn't going to work out when they are opposed to seeing subtitled movies

Anyway, I'm looking for a modern movie--probably 80's and later. I don't have any problem with older movies but she's not really into older stuff. She did say that she wanted to watch Casablanca though because she's never seen it. Something romantic, preferably with a happy ending. You know...just something that women like. Any suggestions?

Wedding Date is pretty solid.

My first choice would be Amelie if she would be willing to watch it. It's not a chick flick but it would be a good date movie. If she wants a more traditional film then I would say:

Serendipity
The Notebook
The Holiday
Notting Hill
My Best Friends Wedding
Sabrina (1995)
About a Boy
Love Actually

Ron G 03-01-08 11:20 AM

I'd have to go with Love Actually.

This thread title is a total oxymoron.

no, your question was kind of silly, to assume that there are some movies that are somehow manly to like. It's gender stereotyping that you're doing to yourself, hence my response. Sorry you couldn't follow that.

visitor Q 03-01-08 08:35 PM

There is a difference between light stereotyping and wise ass follow ups. Then again, this is the Internet and the latter should be expected. But thank you for trying to instill a lesson just the same.

As far as romance films, I happen to own quite a few of them and without need for explanation. Though just the same I have gotten slack from male friends. At the end of the day those relations haven't changed and they had solely based on my film tastes, well .. there are some fairly ridiculous priorities in effect.

The majority of responses to the OP are films where the main narrative falls within the romance genre. There are a couple that were mentioned that are more deceptive, where there are overtones of love/romantism which are subtle, secondary to the main story; Blade Runner and Raiders of the Lost Ark for instance. The intent of my original question was to find out about more of this type of film. So if anything, I'm guilty of hijacking the thread by drawing a tangent and not being direct enough.

And I say "wise ass" only because Brokeback Mountain is a romance film based on what I've heard. Though I have not seen the film, so if I am incorrect forgive my ignorance.

Brack 03-01-08 09:34 PM

people who call other people's comments "wise ass" tend to lack a certain sense of humor.

anyway, BB is probably one of the best romance films made in the past decade. Like all great romantic films, it's always more than just romance.

Brack 03-01-08 09:58 PM

I always thought Mannequin was a fun chick flick.

visitor Q 03-01-08 10:00 PM

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Either way, sorry for the "impulsive" judgement.

Anyway, if you have a chance, seek out the film "Bungee Jumping of Their Own" and give it a try. If you don't already know, it is a highly regarded Korean film that also explores the universal theme of love, regardless of stereotypes ... meaning in this case, through the vessel of homosexuality. It is a challenging to me, but a beautiful and excellent film! I have yet to hear a comparison between it and Brokeback.

I subscribe to a fandub service. All movies are dubbed by Fran Drescher and Gilbert Gottfried.

fiver 03-02-08 05:59 AM

Four pages and I can't believe noone's mentioned one of the most enjoyable chick flicks of the '90s: French Kiss. It's a perfect film of this genre and even guys will like it. Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline have a lot of chemistry together here.

Also, I don't agree that comedy is the most important characteristic; rather, it's the romance angle. Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility is most definitely a chick flick though it's not a comedy.

I would also suggest the BBC's Pride and Prejudice miniseries from the mid '90s. It's long but your chick will love it.

^^^ Posts 27 and 76 mentioned "French Kiss."

Things fizzled out with that girl, so I never even got around to watching a "chick flick" with her. I forgot about this thread after that. Oh well. Thanks for all the suggestions though. Hopefully I can use them at some point.

Ronnie Dobbs 03-02-08 08:35 PM

Lollipop Lipstick Teens 4 was a pretty good one.

xage 03-03-08 09:14 AM

High Tension is a good Chick Flick. Its probably the best movie i saw having the main character as the Main Lady Protagonist and as the Main Lady Antagonist! Highly Recommended!

tanman 03-06-08 03:38 AM

Notebook and Walk to Remember

Although I define "chick-flick" as something totally different. I think of it as a film that 90% of the male population could not stand watching. Like Beaches. What torture it was to be subjected to that film by my new GF and four or so of her closest GFs. Wow that was bad. That film and most of the original lifetime movie events are what I consider true chick flicks.

The rest are romantic comedies and romantic drama of which certain ones I enjoy. My favorite being the Wedding Singer.

ytrez 03-06-08 08:14 AM

Some Kind of Wonderful (in an extremely cheesy sort of way)

Unless we've determined that Amelie is a chick flick. If it is, that's the best.
