Yeah. I'm not saying that Hancock looks like a good movie, but it seems very silly to dismiss a movie simply because it's under 2 hours or not rated R. To each their own, but I've seen plenty of excellent movies that are around the 90 minute mark, and while certain movies do benefit from an R rating, there are plenty of times where such a rating just isn't merited.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I have zero interest in Hancock. Nothing I've seen in the trailer makes me want to see it. It seems perfectly suited to the July 4th weekend crowd, though, and I imagine it'll make a ton of money.

I am sure people with defend the MIB movies, the Bad Boy movies and the few shots are serious-dom that he has tried, but deep down you know that he has not done a single good movie. I think he has the potential to do a good movie as the guy is very likable, but man he needs to fire his agent. I Am Legend had such great potential and it ended up being utter garbage. Give me the Ridley Scott directed movie starring Arnie that i had always read about. Or hell, give me the Omega Man with Chuck.

His agent has made him a gazillionaire. Why would he fire him?

Will Smith isn't trying to be Tom Hanks. He's not trying to be Denzel Washington. He's an actor who makes fun, entertaining movies for a large demographic. What's wrong with that?

And how do you quantify "good" anyways? Is "good" only movies nominated for Academy Awards, or can "good" be a film you pop in for laughs and the fun of watching a big budget movie with eye popping special effects?

I think it can be both.

Draven 06-25-08 11:35 AM

Good Will Smith movies:

Bad Boys
Men in Black
Ali
Enemy of the State

But he's always entertaining to watch, no matter how bad the movie (Wild Wild West, Bad Boys II, Sharktale)

Shannon Nutt 06-25-08 11:41 AM

Variety just panned this movie, comparing it to Arnold's "Last Action Hero". God, it can't be THAT bad, can it?

The genre satire and numerous Will Smith moments, with the star throwing off the attitude-laden quips and looks auds expect from him, carry the first half without too much trouble, in anticipation of where the film will go from there. Where it goes, unfortunately, is right down the tubes.

Ouch...but I actually LIKED Last Action Hero, so who knows.

devilshalo 06-25-08 12:30 PM

I'm in the club that enjoyed Last Action Hero. :(

It's a hard genre to satire properly, because the jokes the true superhero fans would enjoy are too geeky for the general audience, and mainstream parody these days never rises above the Epic Movie/Meet the Spartans level of fart jokes and cheap visual humor.

I don't expect this to be great, but it will be infinitely more watchable than any Will Ferrell movie or any recent Eddie Murphy vehicle.

Mr.Scary 06-25-08 05:54 PM

Good or bad this will make a boatload of money.

I agree, Draven! Will Smith never disappoints. He is pretty strategic when choosing roles for his films and Charlize Theron won't be hard on the eyes as well! Looks like a good movie for the 4th!

PacMan2006 06-27-08 02:54 PM

Caught a screening of this film last night, but since I don't know how to blacken out spoilers, I won't comment yet.

Loved the concept. Thought Will Smith was great. The first 30 mins-40 mins were really fun, and then something happened/was revealed that just really killed the movie for me and the person I saw it with, unfortunately.

Trevor 07-01-08 09:04 PM

Just saw it. Agree with the above. Above average first 30 minutes or so, but it went downhill fast.

Less than mediocre overall. If you've seen all the trailers, you've seen all the good lines/moments pretty much.

My Other Self 07-01-08 09:23 PM

Wow, 35% on RT. I wonder if it'll be packed this weekend when I go see it.

I don't give a shit on reviews. Will Smith is in it. I'm sold.

TheMovieman 07-01-08 11:18 PM

IDK, I thought it was alright overall. Yeah, I think it didn't quite live up to the concept but it was a fun movie. I certainly won't be seeing it again, but I might give it a rent when it comes on Blu-ray. If I had to rate it, I would be generous and give it a 3.25 maybe 3.5 out of 5.

It was entertaining and that's all I really wanted.

Tarantino 07-02-08 03:23 AM

I saw it tonight and thought it was pretty entertaining. I'm glad that the ending didn't pander to what my friends and I thought was going to happen
Spoiler:
, which is that the kid would be revealed to have super powers as well.

The action was good and it kept me entertained. I'd give it a solid B.

Next up, Dark Knight and Eagle Eye.

= J

california9570 07-02-08 12:34 PM

I'm only going to see it because it has a good cast.

SuckaMC 07-02-08 01:04 PM

This movie was great! I really like that they avoided some of the cliches of superhero movies. If you think you know about some bad guy twist from the trailer... you may be wrong.. or right, I wont spoil it. Fun movie with good performances all around. Go check it out.

Spoilers. Do not read this email notification if spoilers bother you.

From the trailers I knew
Spoiler:
nothing about the "twist". So props to the marketing department for largely keeping that a secret. Was her character even in the trailers? But of course, I knew the twist the first time Hancock's eyes met her's. That had to be the most obvious "twist" in Hollywood history. Incredibly poorly done.

The more I think about it, the more I think the 35% might be a good rating.

mdc3000 07-02-08 02:28 PM

I liked it way more than I thought I would...perhaps the bad reviews knocked my expectations way down. I thought the movie worked well until the last action scene - that just didn't do anything for me and felt out of place...other than that, I knew the so called 'twist' from a few shots in the trailer
Spoiler:
and the first time we see Charlize and Hancock together - really telegraphed what was going to happen
. I like that the movie doesn't overstay it's welcome. Not the greatest, but certainly better than some of the shit out there. 3.5 out of 5.

Yes,
Spoiler:
A few people spotted quick shots of her fighting Hancock in the trailer. IMO, now that trailers are easily available for download and scrutiny, they need to be careful what gets put in, even if its a few frames.

RichC2 07-02-08 02:43 PM

Glad to see things are working out okay for her, also glad to see her and Michael wound up getting together afterall, was worried Gob and her retardation might hurt that.

(yeah yeah, I know, and late to the party on that one)

Somebody commented, though no fault of hers,
Spoiler:
she pulled her weight but wasn't right for the role... She's just too big of a name these (relatively speaking) to be cast in a throwaway role, and that alone gave any hope of a surprise away.

I haven't even seen the movie, thanks critics :( (I was wondering WTF she was doing at the premiere).

The Bus 07-02-08 02:49 PM

Getting some bad reviews but it's getting mixed-positive reviews from The AV Club and Peter Travers, who I usually agree with. I'll probably still see it, although my hype will be contained.

(And I liked Fool's Gold, one of this year's worst-reviewed films).
