Having seen the third trailer makes me want to see it even more now - I love dumb humor and Will Smith has really grown on me since I am legend.

I knew nothing of this movie until a few weeks ago. When I saw the trailer before Iron Man I thought they had to be kidding - it really doesn't look all that good. It looks like a movie that doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a comedy? A drama (about a burned out superhero)? An action movie? All of the above?

It looks like a mess to me, and I have ZERO interest at this point. (And I'm a big superhero movie fan - I grew up reading comic books!)

He looks like an X-men in that suit.

I think I will wait for the DvD.

Yeah, because god forbid a movie have many different elements to it.

It's not that it has different elements in it, it's the fact that it looks like those elements do not coalesce into a cohesive movie. It looks like a movie with no focus - written by committee and directed under instruction from several studio suits as well as the producers.

Draven 05-26-08 12:33 PM

The movie starts funny, Will Smith as a "bad" superhero. Decides to straighten up, with both comedic and dramatic effect. Has a big climactic fight with a bad guy and becomes the hero he was always meant to be.

What is so hard to follow there?

Mr. Cinema 05-26-08 12:55 PM

The new trailer makes this look somewhat entertaining, but I'll probably wait for video. I'm sure it's going to be a hit. Why bet against Will Smith at this point in his career?

He managed to make a mediocre film, I Am Legend, into a $255 million hit.

You could tell all this from this one trailer? Impressive. I think I'll hold off on judgment until I actually see the movie. Peter Berg has shown me that he is an effective director who knows how to handle characters as well as huge action, not some hack who can string explosions and witty one liners together.

An4h0ny 05-26-08 05:23 PM

trailer was lame

not one laugh for me at all...

i'm a will smith fan but this did nothing for me

*listens to 'Summertime'*

I did say, "Looks like," not, "Is."

Hey, who knows? Maybe the movie will surprise me. Maybe it won't. At this point I'm not sold on it much at all. Sorry.

(Wait a minute. Peter Berg? You mean Joey Randone from Cop Land? I didn't know he became a director. I haven't seen any of his movies. Interesting... The trailer still doesn't sell me, though. ;) )

I know nothing about this movie besides the fact Will Smith throws a whale and some guys from Best Buy fix computers on a raft or something. This can't be a real commercial...right?

Its the same deal as when Fantastic 4 part 2 came out and SSurfer and Human Torch flew down the street and flipped over cars/ cut to the owners of the car for a commercial. Didn't happen in the movie, just cleverly integrated.

Me? I think it looks great. Berg has yet to disappoint.

And he played Will Smith for the umpteenth time.

Double_Oh_7 05-26-08 08:46 PM

There isn't a movie this summer I want to see less. Will Smith. Playing himself. Again. No thanks.

Besides Ali and Pursuit of Happyness he pretty much replays the same characters over and over. I mean his character in Legend was just a repeat of his character in I, Robot. His character in Men In Black was the same character in Wild Wild West.

He replays the same character pretty well, but after the mess that was Legend I could really use a a good Will Smith flick to restore some faith in him.

This just looks bad.

Amazing how one can know such a 'fact' without having even seen the movie itself.

You AGAIN?!

heh, j/k

When I saw the trailer I thought almost exactly the same thing. At first it seemed like a lighthearted super-hero send-up, then it was a dark comedy, then it was a dramatic deconstruction of Superman, then it was a balls-out superhero movie. Granted yes, a movie can have many elements to it, but the constant shifts in tone and inappropriate humor (which is different from black comedy), can ruin a good concept. What I bothered me the most was that just from the trailer, Hancock recycles many jokes/themes/settings from other recent superhero movies.

- Hancock questioning his place in the universe as he is the sole member of his race or whatever ala Superman, Superman II, and Superman Returns.

- Hancock making fun of his black leather costume ala Wolverine in X-men

- Hancock being spit on by the public by misinterpreting his heroic actions for those of a miscreant, and needing to improve his "public image" ala Spider-man

- Hancock unable to control his powers properly leading to massive property damage ala Hulk

- Hancock having to surrender to the authorities and giving up his superheroics because of outrage ala The Incredibles

bluetoast 05-27-08 05:48 AM

Seeing as how people feel this movie will be multi-faceted/different from the trailers, I am now reminded of Click.

In any case I will be seeing this, hopefully opening weekend.

The Bus 05-27-08 09:18 AM

Well, it's from the writers of The Hire and The Lone Gunmen TV series. And it's being directed by Peter Berg, who is probably one of my favorite commercially viable directors. I still have yet to see a movie by him that I hated, although none of his movies are masterpieces.

I don't know about the jokes, but these themes and settings are well, what superhero comics are about. Some of these themes have been milked for decades.

That's not defending Hancock, but for 90% of superhero movies, they will need to work within the expected superhero framework. Within it, they can still perform admirably (Spider-man 2, Iron Man, X2) or fail miserably.

Gizmo 05-27-08 10:39 AM

Does his hand...cock to throw things? Is that it? I'm just guessing.

Most of the major actors just play themselves over and over again, that is why people go to their movies. Jack Nicholson has played himself for the past 30 years, Nicholas Cage does the same character everytime, Tom Cruise, Will Ferrell. Did Arnold ever not play himself?
