Box Office Mojo said it made $6.8 million yesterday. Did it actually open on 7/1 or is that for midnight showings?

I'm going to side with the thesis that this is a movie about a guy with super powers that didn't need to be made. It's true that if you've seen the trailer, you have seen most of the entertaining bits of super powers on display by Hancock from the film, though the film embellishes the comedic punchlines. But, that's only the first third of the film, and the last 2/3 of the movie veers into head-scratching territory, and produces a mostly bland and off-putting storyline that makes you question why the characters are acting so dumb, except to evince sheer spectacle within the movie, but with little purpose and eliciting very little audience investment in the outcome.
Director Peter Berg's penchant for using handi-camera work is ill-suited for the material, and the special effects were not all that special, and detracted from the super power sequences. Just about all the performances by the principal actors in the movie were wasted in this cash-grab of a movie. The script is the main weak point of the movie, and it needed much more rewrites (with a more purposeful central theme, rather than a hodgepodge of ideas producing cinematic sludge when it could have been a much better concoction of a cinematic smoothie). I give it 1.75 stars, or a grade of C-. |
Just got back from this, I was entertained. Didn't think too much of the plot, but it is what it is, an entertaining movie (at least for me, and I am easily entertained). Theater was packed except for the seats very close to the screen. Huge applause at the end. Bottom line, I can see this easily making 100 million plus by Sunday.
|
I just got out and my theater was pretty empty. I got the feeling the audience was glad when it was over. I thought it was much better than the reviews gave it credit for. I think it will make some bank... but it's not gonna break the bank.

My audience was dead silent. Granted, it was a late afternoon showing in a nearly empty theater, but still. This is a bad movie, people. Yeah, the first half hour was decent, but the best bits were spoiled already by the trailers. The 2nd half of the movie morphs into a cheesy drama. The Last Action Hero comparisons are fitting. Both had interesting premises and started out promisingly before falling apart towards the end when their plots took an unnecessarily dark turn. But at least Last Action Hero had Charles Dance, Tom Noonan, and F. Murray Abraham as its villains. Hancock almost didn't have a villain period. |
I honestly really dont get the hate for this movie. Its not great, but its worth a watch in the theater. I think people went in with wrong expectations of the movie and came out dissapointed when the plot didnt fit their definition of a super hero movie plain and simple.

I think the reason I'm "bashing" the film so much is that the potential was there for a good movie. The first 20 minutes is very good. I agree with our David Walker's review pretty much, he points out the negatives pretty well. I think he over scores it to a "recommended", I'd give a "rent it". |

if this has already been posted sorry, but here's the AMC theatres that are showing 'Hancock' in 4K Sony Digital:
AMC AMC Plaza Bonita 14 3050 Plaza Bonita Rd., National City, CA 91950 AMC AMC Tyler 16 3375 Tyler Ave., Riverside, CA 92503 AMC AMC Orchards 12 14653 Orchards Pkwy., Westminster, CO 80023 AMC AMC Avenue Forsyth 12 410 Peachtree Pkwy., Cumming, GA 30040 AMC AMC Highland Village 12 4090 Barton Creek, Highlands Village, TX 75077 Cinemark Cinemark Tinseltown Plano 3800 Dallas Pkwy., Plano, TX 75093 Marcus Majestic Brookfield Theatre 770 North Springdale, Waukesha, WI 53186 Muvico Muvico Rosemont 18 9701 Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemount, IL 60018 AMC Yonge Dundas 24 10 Dundas Street East, Toronto, Ontario M5B 2G9 |
What is 4K Sony digital?
|
Super high resolution digital (4520 x 2540, most digital theaters used 2K projectors at 2048 x 1080.)
|
it's Sony's version of DLP but under a different name and technology (LCoS: "liquid crystal on silicon")
it actually makes sense to play this in 4K since all the servers/projector's at the Rosemont theatre are not 2K. Supposedly the next 4k feature from Sony, obviousily, will be the James Bond film: "Quantum of Solace" |

If the entire movie was like the first part then I would have really enjoyed it I think. And it doesn't have anything to do with me expecting a comedy and getting a drama instead. My problem was that the dramatic parts of the movie just didn't work. |
Disappointing reviews, although i'm still going to catch it tomorrow.

wow, surprised on the reviews for this one, here and on RT. I thought it was pretty good for a summer movie, What was so bad about this movie? Plot was just as good as most "superhero" movies, There were alot of good laughs in this. Cast was good. Charlize was great looking.
Theater was about 70% full, audience really seemed to enjoy it, tons of laughs through out the movie, Everyone stopped to watch the scene after the credits. I think this is a crowd Pleaser, not perfect but hey its a summer flick, If you just go sit back and relax, Its a movie thats fun and enjoyable. Not a flick were you need to nit pick the plot. The twist is something I didnt see coming. I knew something was coming but didnt expect what happened. Dont get the hate here, its a fun flick, I had fun and the audience seemed to be really in it, People were clapping at the end of the scene that popped up during the credits when the guy called Hancock a certain word. 8.5/10 fun summer flick. It was something different and I had a blast watching it. |
Just got back from seeing this and I enjoyed it. There weren't a ton of people in the audience due mostly to the city's festivities. This was a fun summer movie and yes the tone of the film did change but that didn't diminish how I view the film. Dare I say I liked Hancock more than I liked Hulk and the trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still was nothing to sneeze at either.
|
I just saw this today with my step-dad, and his quote was "It was okay, but now I wish we'd have seen Hulk."
I liked it, I'd give it a B- rating. I didn't laugh too much, and yeah the trailers did reveal alot. The twist kind of got to me as well. Didn't expect it, but could have done without it. |
Packed crowd today and people seemed to really enjoy it... I was entertained. Nice summer action flick. Not the best so far this summer, but worth a viewing in the theatre.
|
Just got home from a showing. I liked it quite a bit. Definately not Oscar worth, but an enjoyable summer movie for sure. I thought it tried to break enough of the genre stereotypes to keep things interesting.
|
I will second what my friend said after we watched it.
The first 45 minutes were actually really solid. Then Hollywood stepped in and realized they were making a good film and had to ruin that for the 35 minutes that followed. |
The trailers we got were better than the movie: Batman, Eagle Eye, James Bond, Day Earth Stood Still and I think there was 1 more good one in there..
I hated the shaky camera work. The first scene Ray and Hancock are outside his house was making me nauseous. It was an okay movie. Pretty much agree with the other reviews about the twist. |
