If Lucas were doing the film, would Lincoln shoot first?

I know he plays the "I'm really complicated and not into the Hollywood lifestyle" thing, and that's cool. But I think a lot of his attitude is a shtick and the guy REALLY loves awards.

I like him and all, but if you've ever seen or read an interview, you know how he seems to try too hard to come off as dark, deep and unattached/uninterested in film making, allegedly having to be nearly begged to do a project.
Daniel Day Lewis takes a job/project and turns it into Oscar bait. He is that good.

I wonder if this means DDL will show up in Springfield, IL to go the Lincoln Presidential library like Neeson did a few years ago.

Definitely.

It'll be a very safe film that pushes all the necessary buttons to try and get some Oscar nods.

If this was Ron Howard I'd agree with you but I have more faith in Spielberg that this will be a very interesting film. His serious films (aside from SPR) are not Oscar bait and are legitimate quality films.

We're going to have to pin down exactly what "Oscar bait" is, because I bet some people would say that movies like Schindler's List, Amistad, and Munich were definitely Oscar bait.

Re: Spielberg's Abe Lincoln Biopic - news, rumors, castings...

How is a film 'bait', per se, if it is genuinely a great film that is simply trying to appeal to an audience that Spielberg is aware exists and will appreciate his fine dramatic work? Calling a film 'bait' seems to indicate to me it means to grasp a hold of you and then go in for a kill.

I love Spielberg, so naturally I find the notion of him making movies just to win awards a bit silly.

Yeah DDL is hot right now but after Neeson's wife's passing he would have leant a somber thing since Lincoln lost people close to him too, this can't be replaced even by DDL's strength.

I'd define an Oscar bait movie as something that gets released in late December with a Miramax logo appearing at the beginning.

Saving Private Ryan was released in the middle of Summer in 1998 and was a huge success at the box office. It garnered Oscar wins and praise because it's a great movie. I'll assume Spielberg didn't decide to make the movie because he wanted to guarantee that he could tell people that he directed an award winning war movie at dinner parties.

Does this mean that Daniel Day Lewis is not going to be available to play The Gunslinger?

Yeah we so need to see DDL in an A-Team or romantic comedy with Jennifer Anuston. That would make him so genuine.

What a thoroughly ridiculously statement. Watch "In The Name Of The Father". Watch it TWICE.

Or My Left Foot. Or There Will Be Blood. Sheesh.

I like Neeson myself and think he would've been good but I'm REALLY excited to imagine what Lewis will do. And who the rest of the cast will be, I quite like the book they're basing it on.

Are you saying his acting isn't 100% amazing? Cuz he could act the shit out of anything. He could act like Mexican film student better than I could..and I'm that fucking student. He's that good.

No he's a great actor. I never said he wasn't.

People on this board act like he's cured cancer or something. He's a fucking actor. He dresses up, puts on make-up and plays make believe for money.

He just comes off as extremely pretentious and self-important. Hasn't he "retired from acting" more than once?

This thread makes me

Also, DDL as Lincoln has me significantly more interested than Neeson.

Neeson had the cheekbones for Lincoln...visually I can't see DDL as Lincoln. BUT I know he can act like him. Wonder what prosthetics he'll use?

Post one example of someone going apeshit for DDL for something that has nothing to do with his acting.

The guy steps away from acting every now and then to concentrate on other things. Theater. Carpentry. Because you can't compartmentalize him into something you can relate to, he's pretentious and self-important? Expand your worldview before casting stones, ya know? Or rent "The Boxer". Underrated gem.
