The first I heard of his name was when the toys came out. Almost positive his name is never mentioned in the films, and I don't recall if it's in the credits or not.

Yes I don't think the name Lurtz was mentioned in the film. The only Urak-hai who was mentioned by name was Lowenstein.

Immersive Dolby sound system to add dimension to 'The Hobbit'

Middle-earth will sound more realistic in The Hobbit.

Dolby Laboratories Inc. and director Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production announced Wednesday that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos, the company’s immersive new sound system that features two extra arrays of overhead speakers and the ability to direct sounds to individual speakers inside movie theaters.

“(Jackson) felt it was going to make a big difference in how he tells stories,” said Stuart Bowling, Dolby’s senior technical marketing manager. “He doesn’t want people to just go and observe his movies. He wants you to feel like you’re part of the experience of the stories that’s he’s trying to tell on the screen and allow you to be part of Middle-earth.”

The director of the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings films adapted J.R.R. Tolkien’s tale of Bilbo Baggins, set in the fictional realm of Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings. Besides the standard 2-D format, Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures are releasing the series in high-frame-rate 3-D, IMAX and other 3-D formats.

Bowling said Dolby’s goal is to have the Atmos platform installed in 80 to 100 theaters in time for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 14.
The second and third films, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, are set for release Dec. 13, 2013, and July 18, 2014.

Other movies slated to be released in the Atmos format include Fox’s Chasing Mavericks and Life of Pi. Disney-Pixar’s Brave was the first film to debut with the audio format earlier this year.

Bowling said the company expects more than 15 films to be released in Atmos next year and hoped to have the system in 1,000 theaters by the end of next year.

“Dolby Atmos is fantastic from a sound quality position,” said John Neill, head of sound at Park Road Post Production. “We can now hear full range surround speakers, meaning that when we pan from the front to surround, the sound does not change in quality. The overhead speakers give us the opportunity to place the theater patron really in the location.”

Jackson shot The Hobbit in 3-D and at 48 frames a second, twice the speed that’s been the standard since the 1920s. He received a mixed reception for high-frame-rate preview footage of The Hobbit at the Cinema Con theater owner’s convention last year. Some thought the images were too clear and realistic, taking away from the magic of the film medium.

I seem to recall from either the DVD supplements or just chatter from back in the day that Jackson named that particular Uruk-hai simply because he needed a way to create narrative focus on a bad guy, instead of just the faceless horde of uglies.

It seemed to have worked on me at least, whenever I re-watch FOTR, I always know in my head, "that's Lurtz, kind of a de-facto leader of that search and snatch team of Uruk-hai".

Yeah, Lurtz is never named in the film. There was a big controversy surrounding his inclusion before FOTR was released, with much hand-wringing from book purists. Turned out it wasn't that big of a deal. Lawrence Makoare, who played him, also played the Witch-King and Gothmog (aka "Elephant-man orc") in ROTK, and he's a pretty awesome dude who hung out quite a bit with my group during the ROTK Oscar party madness and even went bowling with us one night. He had some great stories, especially about the makeup process.

Anyway...the running time of the first movie has been revealed:

That's pretty much exactly what I figured, since my local (film based) IMAX told me there would be no intermission when I asked, and 2 hours 40 mins is about the max they can fit on a platter.

So basically, the ideal viewing experience (in terms of seeing it the way the director intends) would be to see this in a theater capable of 3D at 48fps, and with Atmos sound. I wonder how many theaters will have that combo.

Yeah, not holding my breath this will happen anywhere in town for me. I'm mildly interested in the way this sound will actually work, it just sounds too gimmicky. Same goes for 48fps.

Dolby Atmos has already been deployed in some theaters, and Pixar's Brave screened using the sound format on those screens. There's a separate thread discussing the sound format:

The Pumpking Patch pancakes sound interesting (I'm assuming it's just pumpkin pie flavored pancakes). I'm surprised they're not advertising the concept of second breakfast.

Dolby's 7.1 webpage temporarily had 'The Hobbit' listed as being released in 7.1, but it's no longer there ...

Hopefully more the ArcLight Cinemas in my area begin installing Atmos. I think the Sherman Oaks location is the only one that has Atmos and it's probably just one or two screens.

That's clearly second breakfast. But where are the tomatoes?

2' 40", plus the extended versions on Blu/DVD.

I was *almost* kinda hoping we wouldn't actually have extended editions with the addition of the third film, but I suppose there will be little "book moments" that don't have to be in the theatrical, but will play better at home.

It all seems incredibly dense to me. I liked a lot of the scenes added in the extended editions of the LOTR films but ultimately felt that they put too much back in. Same deal with King Kong, Jackson needs somebody telling him to keep things tighter.

I believe Jackson has stated that the theatrical versions of LOTR are his preferred cuts, and that the extended versions are for the fans.

So, below is Regal’s list of 91 locations where the film is going to be showing in HFR 3D – the branded name for higher frame rates in stereo. Below that is their FAQ sheet on the new format, as posted to their website.

I’m still awaiting confirmation of where the film will be playing at 48fps in the UK. On the upside, those in the UK looking to make a common-or-garden booking can do so at several venues.
