I hate they made Devastator a tank. Use any other name. Devastator is the Voltron-esque giant Decepticon made up of the 5 Constructicons. I've always loved the irony there. I just wish they hadn't used that name for what could have been Brawl or Blitzwing. That and Frenzy not being called Soundwave are the only fanboy issues I had with the movie.

fujishig 07-05-07 07:28 PM

If Frenzy were called Soundwave, I can pretty much guarantee that fans of the old series would be upset that Soundwave was so puny...

I finally saw this after reading all the glowing reviews. I'll admit it was pretty good. It was very funny, funnier than most comedies that come out.

Let me just say I'm not a fan of Transformers. I was too young for that stuff. I'm sure I'm in the minority but I LOVED the first half of the movie but didn't care for the 2nd. As soon as the Transformers started talking it went downhill. The scene where the Transformers are all stomping all over the grass and the garden had my eyes rolling. Very Spielbergian. It was not funny, thankfully no one in the theatre was laughing either. And then all the funny left the movie and it got serious.

I can understand the appeal of the action. The action was pretty good aside from the fact that you couldn't tell what was going on. And probably the biggest WTF? moment in the theatre was (no not the Cloverfield trailer, which was awesome) when Megatron was defeated.

It was pretty good, nothing great. Certainly not worthy of all the praise its gotten here.

I didn't know that "Bonecrusher" was real a military vehicle. I thought he was created for the movie.

Actually, Devastator is SIX constructicons.

My issue with the movie was Megan Fox. Her appearance just screamed "SKANK!" throughout the movie. Fake tan, overdone makeup, overly "sexy." Trying too hard to be "hot."

I think Hasbro could make a killing if they made adult versions of the toys that were full metal. The first thing I did when I got home was to check their site and see what the toys looked like but they were all plastic. I was hoping to find some nice versions to keep on my desk at work.

The Titanium figures might be good for that. Metal and plastic/rubber figures of them in robot mode. Well painted, very detailed, small enough to keep on your desk. I've seen them most often at WalMart.

Well actually that was his Cybertronian form. Im guessing since he could already fly, he didn't need to change into his "protoform" like the Autobots did. And since there weren't any vehicles for him to scan in the Arctic he just kept his Cybertronian form.

I remember awhile back that the writers said that when they want to travel tru space that the change to the "protoforms" and go from planet to planet that way. They thought it was stupid that robots that could turn into vehicles would ride in larger vehicles to get around.

Actually, he was Brawl.

From Wikipedia:

The official names were confirmed in August 2006, although Bay himself was not fully aware of these official names, and this led to Brawl being referred to as Devastator, his on-set name.
So I guess this will probably be corrected in the subsequent home video releases.

edit: hmm... never mind, I guess they do call him Devastator in the movie, though the toy is called Brawl. Some kind of copyright problem maybe? Or just some massive screwup?

And I can see why people are confused about Megatron's ship mode. When we see the autobots come to Earth, they have alt modes that look like meteors (there are even protoform toys of starscream and optimus that transform into meteors). I guess Megatron just had a better-looking space mode.

Yeah they call him Devastor in the movie but everything else calls him Brawl. If i remember right the "pre-script" had most of their names as "code names" so no one could gueess who they were in the script was leaked. And his "code name" was Devastor. Well at some point the names changed to what they wanted to use except him. The writers said in an interview that his name is Brawl and Hasbro said his name is also Brawl. But M. Bay said they ther are all wrong and he's right. Pretty much talking out his ass as he does at times. But to make a long story short, Bay messed up and made his name Devastor cause he thought he was right and everyone else was wrong.

If you go to TFW2005.COM or ALLSPARK.COM they have a thread about it there with tons of other interviews.

Barricade's fate (courtesy of Wikipedia):
Spoiler:
Barricade is one of the main Decepticons in the film; he hunts Sam Witwicky, before engaging in a fight with Bumblebee which leaves him wounded. He is later seen alongside Bonecrusher in the freeway chase, but is not seen again throughout the remainder of the movie. It is possible that he may have survived, along with Starscream and possibly Scorponok, though in the comic book adaptation, Barricade is destroyed by Optimus Prime after being thrown into a freeway support pillar.

I found it pretty funny that the most realistic portrayal of the just every day soldier (not talking about stereotypical movie soldiers) was in a movie about alien robots attacking earth.

Then I read that Bay had unprecedented access for a movie to the pentagon and the military in general. The movie has a bunch of real hardware, and even real soldiers in it. They were very involved. Not just some random retired guy serving as a tech advisor. No wonder it was so technically sound. Well done!

Oh by the way...before I forget. What was that weird homevideo trailer for? All I know is it involves J.J. Abrams. The trailer doesnt even mention when the movie's name!

Actually, there were 6.

pentagon has a special office to help with movies as long as you show the military in a good light

I hope so. All I know is that the tank referred to itself as Devastator in the subtitles.

With the exception of Megatron, Frenzy and Barricade, all the Decepticons were US military vehicles.

But, yeah, the soldiers were well represented and worked well as a cohesive unit.

I know. That's why I figure they may just change it for home video given that it'd only require a simple subtitle change.

I mentioned it before but it's worth mentioning again.... :)

The 6th Constructicon (2nd row, 2nd Transformer w/ drill) in the picture RocShemp posted, is actually the REAL Bonecrusher.

I love all this Transformer talk.

No, in a realistic portrayal of military life, the soldiers would have been fired upon as soon as they approached that village. :|

I'm not sure if it's really unprecedented. The one example I am well aware of is The Final Countdown, in which they used the USS Nimitz, its jets and helicopters, and pilots. And many of the crew appeared as extras, some with lines. That movie holds up well despite its age because of the heavy involvement of the military and the real ships, planes and pilots.

I didn't hate it, but by the time the second hour started I was ready for it to be over. The Transformers looked great and the actual transformations were incredible, but those items can't carry an entire film. I think this movie suffered from too many characters, a disjointed script, and cornball humor when it wasn't needed. Plus, I was expecting a global war and huge battle scenes. Instead I got a number of specific fights in a few specific locations. One other thing that amazed me was that there was no global mass hysteria. Once again, I didn't absolutely hate it, but I wouldn't see it again and repeat viewings are the key to truly gaining blockbuster status.

Don't hate me... I actually wanted to love it!
