The movie dragged on a little. The pacing in the second half certainly was not as good as the first half.

The script was whorrible. Again, the first half was good, but the second half was very weak. I really felt like they had a lot of opportunities to capitalize on and they fell flat. They could have shown character development with Sam based on M's like about not having to give up something you cared about. They could have used the Captain more and built upon that same theme but based around his family. They could have show Sam progress more in his confidence of relationships and women. It's as if he stood there and didn't know what to do when M was looking at him saying, "Kiss me you idiot." It was funny in the beginning, but was tiresome in the end.

Not enough development of the robots.

Too many characters that we were introduced who had time wasted on them. Hackers, and to a lesser extent the main Section 7 guy.

Oh yeah, that annoying little robot.

Things I liked:

The animation. Simply amazing. My one complaint was I felt all of the fight scenes were too tight. I couldn't get a good idea for what was happening to whom. Perhaps the best was the fight under the bridge.

Shia. If he wasn't in this movie I think it would have failed.

Megan Fox. She was good with what she was given, but I think the character could have been written better.

Pete Cullen! I'll take the, "Why'd they use voice synthisizers for $500 Alex!"

Starscream was bad ass!!

The humor/Bumblebee!! The parts with the love songs through the radio were so funny.

Bee-yotch. Nough said.

Okay, now time to say I was a huge Transformers fan growing up. So with that in mind what I did/didn't like from a nostalgia perspective.

Who let these guys write the script?! I saw them interviewed and they said they were fans from when it was originally popular in the 80s. Okay, then WHY did you take something from every Transformers incarnation over the past 25 years and create a "new" mythology?! They tried to cater to too many "fans", and I use that term losely.

I haven't seen enough off the other incarnations, but from what I could tell:

The Spark - Beastwars

Pod Capsules - Beastwars

Animals - Beastwars

Maybe I'm being anal, but I really feel we should have seen two very important aspects with it being a true Transformers film. The Matrix. A cyber Cybertron. Maybe I missed something on that second one, but when they showed the flashback it looked like a magma planet.

I think the Cube/Great Spark was very neat looking and ominious. It actually had a certain epic feeling surround it.

Why'd they show Sam when Prime delivered his famous line? :( Should have been a face shot.

Ahhh...the lips. I'm okay, because they gave us two versions. If you look, at the end when he's in "fight mode" Prime has his original face. I suppose a face guard of sorts? I look at this the same as the mixed webshooter method Rami gave us.

Best G1 fan bites were Primes classic line, the guns/swords that popped up, and the original Bumblebee cameo.

Overall I think it was a good movie and am glad the entire theater I saw it with liked it. If you drop a few of the Bayesque scenes (slowmo girl and matrixy stuff) I think it becomes that much better. I'd be very interested to see a directors cut that is extended. I feel it would force more of the characters to come forward. I seriously doubt they finshed off robot CGI scenes and then cut them. Perhaps a few seconds here and there, but I'm willing to bet most was human centered.

If a sequel is made, which is likely given the $$ this raked in before the weekend even hit, I hope they can come up with a good idea and tighten the script while focusing on the human part of the story.

I think the reason they didn't bring up The Matrix was because of all things "The Matrix" (the movie I mean). People would most likely get confused (especially the people who don't know about Transformers) about them talking about it and wondering is this connected to that movie. Since that was such a popular movie, I think the writers must have felt that it would have been best to just change the name.

I don't think a beauty like megan fox needs to try to be hot. she is.

Typical Bay. Great action, weak story and dialogue. Voight and Turrtoro were campy as all hell.

Yes, some of the robot dialogue was horrible. Had the most potential of the summer films but wasted it on crap like, his ebay thing, and Anthony Anderson.

I thought I was in Stepford until I got to this post. However, I did like Anderson (and his cousin).

But I do know that I'd like the movie to focus on them. Way too many jokes, with many falling flat.

I feel like Elaine from Seinfeld where everyone and their dog loved The English Patient and she couldn't stand it. I wanted to like this film, but it feels just like Armageddon only with Transformers...that piss on people...and practically orgasm when they hack into Air Force One.

Yeah, that pissing scene was pretty low brow. Then again, i've never been one for dick and fart jokes. Guess i'm silly like that.

And, I didn't really notice the helicopter orgy...it's surely not as bad as his placement of "chicks he put in the flick because they promised to bang him"? Speaking of...

I totally agree. But after reading all ten pages of this thread, it obviously worked...

*** (out of four) - and that's being generous.

Typical Bay film that has the usual pros and cons.

Pros -

Good looking, colorful, fun, awesome effects

Cons -

Cheesy, time-wasting humor, stereotypes (does he really think these are funny anymore?)

My biggest complaint - Megan Fox, and the music. The former is just bad casting, the latter.... I understand a movie of this size demands you fit a certain number of songs for the soundtrack into it....and I actually like all of the bands... but this thing demanded a star wars style score and theme - and it doesn't have it. Instead we get Linkin Park (and I love em) closing out our movie... a shame.

As a Transformer fan - loved it. It was my 2nd fav series behind He-Man growing up, but I don't really remember the specifics (what the characters looked like, origins, etc) so the changes didn't bother me a bit... it just made me feel young again. Like others have said, I can't imagine what this must be like to ten-yr olds today, it's probably their new fav movie.

I think perhaps the article meant unprecedented in terms of the pentagon. Regardless, my original opinion remains. It is pretty funny in such an unrealistic movie there is a whole lot of reality

did anyone else think the score was good?

also did anyone get goosebumps when the autobots arrived... i think the combination of the music and visuals were top notch for that moment

chanster 07-06-07 11:23 AM

Exactly. This, did not.
Well it had a pretty cohesive storyline for a Transformers episode, which inevitably landed up with Autobots and Decepticons fighting over some energy source. I will admit the hacker subplot was superflous, but other than that, it was pretty much par for the course.

I also thought the score was good. I've watched it twice and the score does have a theme. It's just not as catchy and obvious as Hans Zimmers'. Jablonsky's score in Island was also good, especially the ending.

I thought I was listening to the Armageddon theme the whole time. Don't get me wrong, it was a good score, just nothing new for a bruckheimer film.

How did Megatron know English?

No. Then again, i've only liked the scores for Bad Boys & the Rock (keepin' it Bay-related).

Good question. Just be glad he wasn't exposed to that one soldier or else his first words would have been, "Yo soy Megatron!"

stupid summer movie. i think i lost a few IQ points watching that. the action was fun at first, but it wears thin by the end of the movie. i can't remember seeing such a disjointed movie before.

I wouldn't call her a "beauty" either. There is more to "beauty" than sex.

I didn't see it mentioned, but the part of the film that sticks in my mind as both a nice example of character growth (perhaps the only one) as well as another example of the great animation was Bumblebee who...

Spoiler:
...after dispatching Devastator, lifted up part of his face shield and gives a little look of "Holy shit, how the hell did I do that?!"

It wasn't the main thing on the screen. In fact, I think there was another conversation/action scene happening at the same time, but that little scene stuck with me.

Should I assume that was Spielberg's influence?

Count me with the others who dug the score. That scene, especially. It's my favorite scene in the movie. The awe of the "heroes" arriving... it was like a noble cavalry charge... the build up, the crescendo, the drop down to the choir as Iron Hide lumbers out of the pool... say what you want about the lack of plot (and I agree), but that scene gave me chills and the music had a good deal to do with it.

I did catch that! Touches like that play a big part in why I dug this so much.

The audience I was in laughed and cheered when he did it.

PopcornTreeCt 07-06-07 04:31 PM

I don't really understand how Bumblebee was able to talk at the end when he never got his voice box fixed.

Was Jazz the only Transformer that died? It seemed they were dying left and right but then Jazz was the only one they were talking about. It's probably because I couldn't keep track of the heroes and villains. I was actually surprised that Timothy Olyphant was able to.

Speaking of which, why do they keep showing his wife and baby? It led to absolutely nothing.

Did they really expect everyone to believe it was just a military project gone awry? Seriously?

Please tell me what happened at the end. How was Megatron defeated?
