I don't get the hate for this movie. It's no better or worse than the first two and about par for the course. Listen... this is a movie about a MAN that gets bitten by a MAGIC SPIDER and then wears a tight SUIT. You're complaining about a movie based on this?
I thought it had OK action (although it was basically the same I'm-falling-watch-the-camera-follow-me setpiece), the jokes were OK (especially the Bruce Campbell cameo), and the story moved along at a nice pace. I give it a B+ at its high points and a C- at it's low points. For what it's worth, not as good as the second movie but much better than the first.

My thoughts:
1. Most feel Spider-man 2 set the bar very high and Spider-man 3, while not as bad as many say but still a bit of a mess, was from meeting that bar. I would agree.
2. High Fanboy expectations crushed.
3. It's the Internet. People are harsh critics on the Net, and dvdtalk in particular
.4. Missed steps, missed opprtunities, and just plain bad choices by the writers, director, and Studio.

I fall under the "It wasn't TERRIBLE, but could've been done MUCH better" camp. Here's my grocery list of mostly negative aspects on the main points:
1. The Black Suit- Handled very poorly all around. At first he was able to take it off as a physical article of clothing. Then all of the sudden we realize it's stuck to him when he tries to forcefully remove it in the bell tower. Which, while I'm at it, wasn't set up properly either. There was ZERO mention of the symbiote reacting to sound at all, yet he just looks at a church and figures the bell would remove it?! (Forgive me if his Professor explained it on the phone; there was a lot of talking during my showing at that point.) Besides that, the suit didn't really "do" that much for him. Sure, it made him a tad more aggresive, but didn't seem to give him any noticable strenght/advantage. In the comics, he WAS more powerful with the symbiote suit. That was the whole damn point of the story; it was a conflict between ridding himself of the desire to be more powerful. Even though it was "taking over" him, he still had a bit of an addiction to the advantages of the suit. In the movie, it's just like "Eh, this thing's making me an asshole. Think I'll get rid of it." No real struggle.
2. Venom- Obviously just tacked on. I actually liked the Parker / Brock rivalry, but the circumstances of him becoming Venom was weak. In the comics, the suit FOUND Brock and bonded with him by choice because of his hatred of Parker. In the movie, hell, Aunt May could've been at the bottom of the bell tower and gotten a hella rad suit. Overall, Black Suit and Venom should've been in two different films, much less THIS one with everything else going on.
3. Sandman- Cool look, but weak origin. He seemed like a pretty decent enough guy to me. Having him be Ben's "accidental" killer was horrible. The very ESSENCE of Spider-Man is that he could've PREVENTED Ben from being killed had he stopped the thief, but didn't due to selfishness. That guilt is what lies at the core of the character. IT'S THE WHOLE DAMN REASON HE BECAME SPIDER-MAN! So now all of the sudden he realizes he couldn't have changed a damn thing. LAME.
4. Gwen Stacy- Better than MJ, but pointless at this junction. So if they make a 4th film, Peter and MJ have to break up AGAIN, and then we have to suddenly care enough about Gwen so that
?
5. Action scenes- Ok, so here's the saving grace of the movie for me. Fast, hard hitting fights. While the first two films had better "set pieces" (like Peter stopping the train), I always felt the actual fighting was a bit restrained. Here it was all-out and seemed like they were actually causing pain to each other, which was cool to see. I know Spidey was pretty battered in the first two, but overall you catch my drift. Anyways, there's also a complaint which was pointed out previously: during all these spectacular fights, TONS of debris is flying everywhere, and to where? Bricks, GLASS, etc falling from buildings, and no one is doing a damn thing about it. What's always made Spidey fights thrilling is how he balances kicking ass and keeping children from being crushed by falling cinder blocks. Wasn't really happening in this one.
6. Harry- Probably the best story arc of the movie. Didn't mind the amneisia thing, since it at least brought in some tension ancticipating when he'd come to his senses. Although they ruined it all with the butler. Really, if Peter couldn't convince his best friend about the truth, then Harry would've likley been too far gone to believe the butler at that point as well. You'd think the guy would've said something a few years ago, seeing as Harry was pretty anti-Spidey at the outset of the second movie. Deus Ex Machina in the worst possible way.
Ok... again, I didn't HATE the movie, but as many have said, expectations were high and what's more frustrating is that a GREAT movie could've been made with most of the raw materials on display. It's the type of movie that I'd normally believe that maybe a "Director's Cut" will come around and fix a lot of problems, but sadly the butler scene washes those hopes away. That scene really shows that someone was slacking off at their typewriter.

and while being bummed he saw the Tower and was moping outside and realizing the suit was fucking with his emotions. He went in to take the suit off and the suit got pissed and fought him. He accidently hit the bell and the suit reacted. Mind you he didn't even realize the bell thing 'til later. The Symbiote then found the -pissed off- Brock below while escaping Peter. Remember what the Doc said about the thing reacting to emotions, agner in particular?

I've seen it three times in the last six days. This movie gets better with each watching. Okay, so the villians aren't in it much. Who cares? At least they're good and effective. So Peter cries a lot. I lot of terrible shit happened to him. If I was him I'd be crying all those times too, if not more so. It's funny, action-packed, and touching. What more can you ask?
I just can't believe how jaded and nitpicking the critics were on this one. It's a very good addition/wrap-up of the storylines from the first two.
As far as Venom goes, does anyone really think we saw the last of him?

Well, Spider-Man 3 is now the first movie in the series to fall below 7.0 on IMDB. It's sitting at 6.8 right now. I can't believe that Disturbia ended up getting better reviews than a Spider-Man flick. It's just sad when you think about it.
I'm still ticked over this movie.

I thought Spider Man 3 was/is significantly better than Superman Returns. Come to think of it, I remember a split among fans regarding that movie as well....
Superman Returns wasn't bad, but there were some significant flaws in the script as to how the character was portrayed. With Spider Man 3 Raimi is just guilty of trying to do too much - but what we got on screen was a lot better than what we got with Batman Forever or Batman and Robin - two movies guilty of the same thing.
I'd give Spider Man 3 a 7.5 on the IMDB scale, or a "B+" letter grade.
