re: Disney's The Princess & The Frog (return to 2D / 2009)

Thread started over 2 years (almost 3) ago for a movie? I remembered watching the trailer a few months ago and first thing I noticed was that it would take place in New Orleans (where I'm from) and secondly that it was in 2D. I thought for sure no one was going back to 2D animation after statements were made to that effect and with the proliferation of money making CGI animated movies. It's a welcome change. I guess the success of this film may determine if more 2D animated movies will be produced in the future.

Ah! Thanks for the share matrixrok9. Those were some fun facts. My personal favorite was "Prince Naveen had to be handsome in the movie, so animation supervisor Randy Haycock would ask his daughter which of his different sketches of the prince were handsome. The final verdict? Prince Naveen now has Jonas Brothers eyebrows." Too funny!

Is anyone else excited about the soundtrack for this film? It will be released on November 23rd.

What kills me is that I'm a fan of Disney's 2D stuff, and would love to see it make a comeback. But honestly this story just doesn't do anything for me.

And yet I still love "Cars" quite a bit. I think it gets unfairly hammered-on by the populace at large.

I know what you mean because I felt that way at first too, but the story and characters have definitely grown on me. I think once the music and animation is all on the big screen together it will instantly feel like a classic. I am glad to see the return to 2D regardless!

I'm very excited about this movie. I bought the soundtrack from Amazon and I am loving "Dig a Little Deeper". I can't wait to see this next week!

Oh ya! The entire soundtrack is so good and I can't wait to put the songs with the scenes from the movie this weekend!

Saw this last week - LOVED IT! Very much a return to form, fits right in with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and the other "princess" flicks.

Great characters, a fun story, looks great, some scary stuff. Very good!

Here is the song "Dig A Little Deeper" that mraw and I were talking about for anyone who wants to listen to it!

Draven -- Was it very emotionally touching? My co-worker saw it and said she was tearing up the entire time and kept praising the story and songs!

Can someone explain how Tiana is a princess? Last I heard, the United States isn't a monarchy.

Is this movie really that good? Does it really hold up to some of Disney's best neoclassics? i.e. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Little Mermaid etc. I'm just wondering if it's a case of nostalgia or a desire for anything classic Disney since it has been quite a long time since we've gotten something like this.

Yes, it's that good. Fits right into that "world" of films.

fernista - Very touching. Not a huge tear jerker but there are moments...one in particular...that are pretty heavy.

I can explain it but it gives big stuff away:

Spoiler:
She doesn't actually become a princess until the end of the movie when she marries the prince from Moldavia. In the trailers she is just dressed up for a costume party

Draven -- That is similar to what my co-worker said. She said at one point she just gaped and was definitely taken aback.

tanman -- I feel like "classics" are only deemed as such a couple years after the movies are released, don't you think? I remember walking out of The Lion King and enjoying the film and praising it, but it wasn't until months had passed and then I rushed to go get the film at the video store. I think it is too early to say whether this is a "classic", but from what people are saying...it seems like it is definitely on the right track to get such a title.

Re: Disney's The Princess & The Frog (return to 2D / 2009)

Saw this last night. It's quite good, but not great. Certainly not on the level of The Little Mermaid or The Lion King.

The good: The voice acting, the animation, the songs.

The bad: The plot feels forced, the villain doesn't have much to do, and the movie takes way too long to get going.

It's a good start but Disney will have to step things up for future outings.

Re: Disney's The Princess & The Frog (return to 2D / 2009)

Time magazine just named the film #1 in a "Top movies of 2009" list. That is really incredible...UP was ranked #2. I loved UP, so I am expecting greatness from this one too. Thanks for the wonderful review Suprmallet!

Thanks, but I'll stick to your mini-review in your post before I see the film. I'd rather see the film fresh and not have a reviewers "issues" in mind that I'm actively looking for.

I'll definitely check it out after the film though.

I agree. Please see it for yourself. I thought it was wondefrul and stands on its own. I'm kind of tired of people comparing this movie to the others from the 80s and 90s (especially when preceded with the line "it wasn't as good as..."). This movie is on the level of any Disney movie of that era IMO, and there were several things going on at the end that had me quite full.
