Liked it a lot. Saw it twice now.
The in-between queen scenes worked for me. I admit that I was a little bored by them. But they were short. The collective payoff was excellent - and go a lot of cheers from the crowd.
The only missed note that I felt was the king and queen's sex scene. There was something that made me chuckle about showing different positions. It was okay, but the 'taking it from behind shot' just made me giggle a little. It just remined me of the puppet sex in Team America. Like it wouldn't have been as silly had it been edited just a few seconds shorter.
The overhead shot of the king and his army laying dead was just arresting. As soon as it pulls out a bit, the image looked 2D. It was a 'wow' moment for me.
So, can Zak Snyder officially do 'anything he wants' now? When I saw Dawn of the Dead, I knew he was going to be someone to pay attention to.

Finally saw this tonight. Liked it a lot, looking forward to the DVD. Pretty much a non-stop orgy of violence, but visually, it had a stylistic grace and elegance that was, at times, breathtaking.
Quite possibly the most fascist, militaristic, pro-war film ever made.
And yet also the most homoerotic film since Top Gun.
It made Troy and Gladiator look like Claire's Knee.

Wel we finally saw it today and of course at the IMAX. With the stunning visual work on the giant screen with a surprising soundtrack backing it one could not help wanting to be in the picture. I'm glad it stated out the way it did so to answer all those "what's the deal with Spartans and King what's-his-name" questions. The effects of the mythological element was just right and not over-the-top. Same with the touch of humor in just the right spots and tone. But this "IS" a war movie and like Braveheart and Troy metal meets flesh anything and everything goes, literally. The fast-to-slow camera work captures the battle elements just right. Been great to see Spartacus done like this. In fact Kirk Douglas as Spartacus would've fit right on in there.
A good film thoroughout and a must have when it comes out on DVD. For those that hate war, blood & guts, kick-n-butt, honor, glory, freedom for country stuff stay far away.

It's sad that I find the last few posts significantly more entertaining than the actual movie.
Edit: Lateralus, thats a spoof on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I enjoyed the film for what it was but felt David Wenham dragged it down. It sounded like he was reading his lines and his voice wasn't at all comfortable.

To sum it up: childish.
If you, as a child, enjoyed setting up scores of plastic army men for about 2 hours and then knocking them over (melting some with a lighter) as their nemesis (the slightly larger Boba Fett action figure) kept getting caught in their trap (mostly getting slammed in dresser drawers and getting a dousing from a tube of Halloween vampire blood) while surviving and slaughtering countless more army men (green and grey) then you will like it.
Also, I think we can all agree that the human body is a wonderful aesthetic physically fit and greased up ...down to how many tubes we have in our necks.
If that's your thing, you will like it. I did.
(And, yes. I too am a childish person sometimes. It's part of life that rocked so much that to shed it is a fucking shame in my book.)

1) First of all, here's the Wikipedia entry on the Battle of Thermopylae.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae
2) Ru-paul??? I'm surprised no one has mentioned the resemblance of Xerxes to Jaye Davidson's RA in Stargate. I kept waiting for Kurt Russell and James Spader to show up in speedos and capes!
3) Overall, I liked the movie, it was very derivative of Lord of the Rings(but that was mostly a good thing), I could have done without the heavy handed voice over(or done with less of it), the 'magical' elements, but overall pretty entertaining.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, if you're gonna steal, steal from the best. but I felt like the 'magical' elements(which were also reminiscent in particular of LOTR) weakened the story somewhat.
Of course you could argue that Tolkien took some of his inspiration from the Battle of Thermopylae!

These are all great!
