I just picked this up (after waivering many times seeing it at CC) and popped it in a few nights ago. I saw it originally in theaters and I think i thought it was good. never really saw it again until now. i couldn't believe how well it held up. sure it is over the top and corny, but it was so much fun. the performances had such a self mocking way about them that i just loved. it seems no one took it seriously and it paid off in the wackiness.

especially, Peter Weller. he was perfect as the man's man hero. jeff goldblum was his always kooky self.

the movie really had action and some heart. and i totally loved the very end with the hero's roll call. i even downloaded the theme music and now use it as a ringtone.

i really liked this movie after discovering it again.

Absolutely fantastic movie. My friend and I couldn't decide between this and Red Dawn when it was in the theaters. We picked this. What a happy day that was.

That's one of my favorite older movies but most people who I know that have seen it don't like it (kinda like Near Dark).
I saw it in the theatre during it's initial release. How many people can say that??

I love the concept but didn't much care for the execution.

No. I think they wanted this character to become like a "Doc Sampson" type that could get a comic book and become a big franchise, but it was not based on a comic book (though Marvel did do an adaptation of it).

I'd have to agree too. It's one of those films that I really try to like, but just can't as much as other people seem to.

I thought it was a superb film. Still can't quite believe it got made since it came out of nothing. A film written with a built in franchise and apparently an ungodly amount of mythology that got vaguely referred to. Amazing casting. Everyone seems to be having a blast in it.

That's apt as hell. I felt that this flick was like the (potential) germination of something that could have been as rounded as any Star Wars or Trek universe out there. It was so dense in unexplored avenues and hints to details that could led to spinoffs and entirely new series of films, books, comics and (would they dare?) 80's produced rock music.
Yeah. It was dated by the rock show scene and the cold war, but so was Terminator and I love that movie too.

I saw this in theaters the day it came out. I was the only person in the theater who was laughing at the funny bits. I went home after it ended and dragged my mom to see it. She loved it as much as I did.

It's an esoteric movie and I can see why it bombed, but it remains one of my favorite movies to this day.

Funny. When I was watching the end of The Life Aquatic it felt like watching the end of Buckaroo Banzai. Was that ending a tribute to Buckaroo?

Same here - but, to keep a positive attitude, it was better than The Adventures of Pluto Nash.

I have heard that Big Trouble in Little China was supposed to be a sequel, because Lo Pan was a part of the Buckaroo Banzai mythos, but due to legal problems an actual Buckaroo sequel couldn't be made. Thus was spawned another Snake Plisskin wannabe movie instead.

The funny thing is, since I'm a big sci-fi fan, this is the kind of movie I should really like. It just doesn't work for me.

Something I always wondered about the movie... SPOILERS AHOY!!!



Rawhide gets killed by the Lectroids. So does Penny. Buckaroo brings Penny back to life with a kiss while he's engergized from the good aliens. At the end of the movie, we see the entire cast marching thru the LA riverbasin, including... Rawhide. So my question is, did Buckaroo bring back Rawhide with an energized handshake (hopefully not a kiss!), or was the marching cast at the end supposed to be symbolic rather than literal?

For what it's worth, I always told myself Rawhide got revived.

This was always a favorite of mine. I haven't watched it in years though.

It always seemed to me that the lead character was what I would pretend to be as a child. The guy was awesome at everything a kid would want to be awesome at.

This movie rocks. It seems like a movie that was genuinely fun to be in, and the actors show it.
