At the end of the movie, we see the entire cast marching thru the LA riverbasin, including... Rawhide. So my question is, did Buckaroo bring back Rawhide with an energized handshake (hopefully not a kiss!), or was the marching cast at the end supposed to be symbolic rather than literal?

Never liked it much when I caught it on scifi (edited?), but after Twitch highlighted along with a bunch of other flicks I like ("genre mashups" -- ie. Save the Green Planet, Big Trouble in Little China), I gave the DVD a shot and enjoyed it immensely.

I saw it on videotape a long time ago, and thought that it was a bad execution of a great concept. I like Repo Man and Big Trouble in Little China a lot more. I even like The Shadow more.
Actually, I could use Repo Man in the Movies You Obsess Over thread.

It was under extreme pressure testing to see if it could survive an airplane drop to starving countries. Buckaroo was developing a watermelon that could survive high pressure so that he could feed the world and solve the lack of water in desert countries. Bob Geldof would be so proud.

The movie is a mix of genres kinda like Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
For years there were rumors there was going to be a FOX show but it never happened.

After driving my rocket truck through a mountain, I discovered this thread stuck to the driveshaft.
I watched Buckaroo Banzai ... I'm not sure if I had seen it before or not (I haven't ventured into that thread yet). Parts of it seemed familiar, but most of it was brand new to me.
I think I'm going to fall in the camp of "great concept, didn't really care for the execution though." I can easily get past the dated aspects of the film (though it actually holds up pretty well). However it just seemed sloppy as it would just jump from one crazy thing to the next with no lead in, set-up, or even real payoff.
The cast did seem to be having a great time and Lithgow rocked it. It was amazing the number of known actors (or would be known down the road) who were in this. Most of them middling character actors that only film geeks would recognize, but nonetheless ...
When was the last real talk of finally bringing a sequel to the screen? Who would you cast today?

Re: How good was... "Buckaroo Banzai"?
I saw it on opening night in a big theater. Not a huge crowd for a Friday night. My girlfriend at the time fell asleep in the first third and I didn't bother to wake her; we never discussed the film, and it was as if it never happened. The crowd was dead silent for most of the movie, and it seemed to me, not in a "good" way. I went in pretty hyped for it, and was somewhat disappointed; I felt that there was some very clever stuff, and some stuff that just laid there (a little too much for my taste). However, I've grown to appreciate over time and have bought the DVD and the Bluray.

It's one of my friend's favorite movies, and I even bought him the Steelbook for his birthday earlier this year, but I could never get into it myself. Always struck me as poorly-made and uninteresting. Different strokes, I guess.

I've seen it once, when it was released. I might've caught it on HBO or Cinemax. I thought it was just okay.

I love this movie! I saw it in a drive-in on opening day. I joined the Blue Blaze Irregulars fan club in the 80s too. Got all kinds of cool BB stuff including a monthly newsletter with upcoming news on the sequel (HA). Lot of interesting stuff like learning how to tie a bowtie.
Before he wrote the screenplay, Earl Mac Rauch said he had written Buckaroo Banzai stories forever and had them all tucked away in his desk. While writing the screenplay (and novelization), he used the angle that the entire world already knew about Buckaroo's adventures and "Across the 8th Dimension" was just the next one in line. The novelization references these adventures in footnotes throughout the book.
Disappointed we never saw Hanoi Xan in action.

I have a vague memory of seeing this on cable once upon a time but don't remember anything about it or even if I liked it or not. My viewing log doesn't list it at all, but then I found a list in another word file that seems to indicate I did. I suppose I should watch it someday--either again or for the first time, just to be sure.

I'd watch it with the olds. It would make perfect Banzai sense. One of my top 10 faves ...

I never understood the cult following for this one. Tried and failed on multiple occasions to watch and I just cant connect to it at all.

I was watching it recently after hearing how great it was.
Although it was very colorful, I got bored of it after he finished the test and found some kind of goo/rock from dimension X on the car.
I'll have to give it another shot one of these days.
