We know he does that all the time...we need to see those special "Oh Shit Supes got his ass kicked by (insert super villain name)!!!" moments.

Hell yes! That is what's deeply lacking in Superman cinema. Make Superman get punched and being flinged to a building and going through it, then show him pissed off and flying fast right into the villain and plummet him into the ground.

In Superman II when he was spinning around Zod I bet you some audience members were rooting for Supes to fling his ass far. That's what Superman movies need. That kinda interaction with the fans.

But instead we get a Superman acting like such a wuss over a used goods Vagina (lois lane) with a boring kid.

Agreed. I was going to post pretty much the same thing before I read this and Solid's post.

Sorry, but that's the reason we end up with shitty movies like Transformers. Who cares about plot and character when the masses just want zippy action scenes, right?

Well, I think we all just want a healthy balance of both. Returns showed that too much plot and character development makes for a boring fucking movie. The few action-y scenes contained within were relatively weak, plane rescue aside. I agree that it would be nice to see a villain that doesn't need kryptonite to kick Supes ass.

I was disappointed by SUPERMAN RETURNS, but it wasn't because Supes didn't "punch" anybody. To me, the perfect SUPERMAN movie would consist of him never punching a single person. I'd want to see an Alan Moore/Grant Morrison-styled tale of absolute cosmic power and wacky high sci-fi concepts. Of course, audiences are conditioned to want BIG! ACTION! scenes, not big science and philsophical cosmic doodah. It'd bomb bigtime. Too bad. :(

I agree. We also need a villain that isn't Lex Luthor and a plot that doesn't involve averting disasters made by Luthor.

As big and dumb as it would probably be, I'd love to see Supes vs. Doomsday.

I agree. The action scenes were weak, except when they were awesome.

With so many great plot ideas in this thread, I wish WB would just let DVD Talk members hammer together a script. I'd gladly throw down my $$$ to see the stuff that gets cooked-up here wind up on screen.

non - stop - action. Love it.

superman returns was good i thought.

they should make a superman movie where he is clark kent* the entire movie trying to live his life as retired or something and he has to resist urges to save people and fight crime and try to fit in as a normal human being. at the end he will decide to be superman and bust out of the phone booth and fly off (like neo) and that will lead into the sequel for whoever he decided to un-retire for.

Let me elaborate more on what I said cuz I think some ppl just took it as I and a few others just wanted a kick ass fight. We do..but...seriously. Superman: The Movie is the only Superman film that has told a story without him literally kicking ass w/ his fist on a person's face. His villain..Lex Luthor was great for the time. In our time though...we want a damn fine story of epicness that will have the world shaken to it's core. We know he saves people all the damn time. I don't mind seeing it a bit, it's what he does. BUT...he's not really a superhero if he doesn't have a super villain to push him to those standards. I'd like to see Darkseid tale...cuz we know it'd be epic storytelling and a badass battle. Personally...deep down I'd love to see another Zod plot..but...more so I'd want something I haven't seen in Supes film. Darkseid, (to a semi less extent...you just better explain his existence really well) Doomsday, or a Brainiac plot would be nice.

It already sounds worse than The Quest For Peace.

HULK 2 had kick-ass fight scene at the end and that movie didn't set the box-office on fire.

Oh stop. Obviously we would want a good story. But we also want more actoin worthy of the Superman character.

Because "the hulk" is a stupid boring character and there isn't much one can do with him. :p

I'll drink to that.

HULK is boring as hell, unless Peter David is writing him in the late 80s/early 90s.

Any hero can be interesting with the proper story. Superman the Movie was good because of this as well as the 90's animated series. Also, to make any hero interesting, he needs to have an interesting antagonist. A funny, wacky Lex Luthor may have worked in 78 and the 80's, but a serious one was needed in Superman Returns. Superman has a decent rogues gallery. If the writers of the new movie use a villain like Luthor, Doomsday, Brainiac or even Darkseid in the film, they need to show him as a real threat to Superman, not a watered down, campy version of it. The writers should stop using Superman himself as being his own worst enemy.
