I don't know about you all, but I'm dying to see Lex Luthor attempt to kill millions of innocent people in a Real Estate scheme. *crosses fingers*

Superman *is* an alien. I don't think the existence of extra-terrestrials would exactly be a SURPRISE to the citizens of his Earth...

If the Superman origin is real played out, it should be an option.

With "socialism" being the scary buzzword of the moment, I'm not sure "Communist Superman" would play real well.

gmanca 10-30-08 06:15 PM

Yeah, that's true; It'd be a shame for that to have an effect.

I hate communism, but I love wearing my Red Son T-Shirt.

Uh, yeah, it would be Supes.

Some of the best stories pertaining to him have followed these guidelines.

Oh, but we have to have his child be in the movie, still.

If we want to go into the Elseworlds, my recommendation is for my FAVORITE alternate tale, Speeding Bullets:

The TRUE Superman/Batman.

Good choice.

Not really up for another Origin story. We know it by heart.

That's the correct order. And The Super Seven was such a fun story. I would also go for Superman: The Dark Side, even though I only red part two of that three part story.

hitmanjules 10-31-08 12:26 AM

I like the Darkseid choice BUT... wouldn't it ask for too much suspension of disbelief? You already have the one fantastic element, Superman, and the audience buys him, his abilities, etc. Darkseid would be a planetary threat, and wouldn't simply come to Earth to engage Supes in fisticuffs. There'd have to be all of Apokolips' minions and that's just budget-busting and overwhelming. Hopefully, Bruce Timm would be brought on board to orchestrate.

For the next Superman movie to be exciting, original, and not a rehash of the same ol' superman flicks, it's got to revolve around:

-Darkseid/Brainiac
-Apokolips (Darkseid's planet) & Orion/New Gods
-Outerspace/other planets/galaxies (not just a shot of Superman flying next to Earth as in all his other flicks)

In other words, Superman should be like a Star Wars-type film. Instead of characters such as jedi and sith - it should revolve around superpowered heroes (Superman/New Gods) and villains (Darkseid/Brainiac). If the movie wants to have some "Earthly humanity connection", just have Darkseid kidnap and enslave hundreds of Metropolis people such as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor and stick them in a huge prison on a spaceship or on the planet Apokolips. And Lex Luthor can even use his great wits to flip the situation - free himself, side with Brainiac, and possibly even help Superman in the end by destroying Brainiac. In the comics/cartoons, there is a relationship between Lex and Brainiac (Lex envies Brainiac's genius, power, technology in which he would want to side with Brainiac and eventually replace him).

Even if the movie has Superman having mega-fight scenes with Darkseid or Brainiac, the ending could still have Superman being the defensive protector. Lex can fight/stop Brainiac. Orion (Darkseid's good heroic son) can fight/stop Darkseid. And Superman can save all the Earthlings by protecting them and bringing them back to earth...After all, he has used Lex' help before to defeat three supervillains that he couldn't stop (Superman 2). Superman is the most powerful protector on earth, but not in the universe. There are many times when Superman can't necessarily stop Darkseid/Brainiac or any other superhero villains all on his own. Superman needs help from others, which is very human to accept help no matter how powerful one is...

You had me hooked on your idea until I saw the word Lex.

I's funny but I thought I was the only one who dug that story. It's always overshadowed by the more popular Elseworlds stories (like the aforementioned Speeding Bullets) but it was always one my my faves. :)

I know I have those two issues, but can you refresh my memory on the plot?

haha. I only threw Lex in their for the Lex lovers. I'm sick of Lex and would be happy if he never was in another superman movie.

Looks like Brandon Routh is in. :)

Brandon Routh discusses his future as Superman
Posted By JimJimBinks on October 31, 2008

(IESB) During the premiere of Zack & Miri make a Porno, IESB had a chance to speak with Brandon Routh. Of course Superman came up.They discussed Brandon coming back for the sequel, the rumors about Superman being much darker, as well as Bryan Singer still being signed on. Check out the quotes below, but click the link for the whole interview.

"Well, the most recent conversation I had [about another SUPERMAN] was with Paul [Levitz] when I was in New York and we talked about what Warner Bros. [are] thinking and what the situation was and obviously, thankfully, he is still wanting me to be a part of it and I certainly want to be a part of it."

"No, I don't have a time frame. I haven't really heard the studio's stance, I've just heard what's in the media and that every time I see somebody from Warner Bros. they tell me that they are working on it and are going to figure it out soon. But that's about the answer I get."

"I don't think the character necessarily has to be darker, I think he is kind of dark in a sense, emotional dark, in Superman Returns, and the movie as a whole was slightly dark, they could have had more prowess in it I suppose, and I think that's one thing that can be done in the sequel, so I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily. You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it. But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not is nature."

What do you think? Come join the discussion at The Planet.

Just read Super Seven on recommendations here...It was pretty good, definitely better written dialogue than Bullets, but still like Bullets premise better. Never been a big "Aliens never heard of before invade" type of fan, for one, two, what was their powers? Why was their leader so 'super strong'? Do they have their own metas? I don't know, but as far as a villain goes, not a huge fan of that angle.

Maybe we should start a S7 thread so I can talk about this some more...I was interested in what was meant by the Metallex scene at the end and why Wizard would want to see the S7 universe incorporated into the DC Multiverse when so many 'big' names were killed off. I read reviews of this online and the one where the guy says, "And the survivors are not who you might expect." That's not really true or 'shocking'. Name the three biggest heroes in the DC universe. Now kill them. That's the story. I didn't like them killing off some of those characters, either, because it didn't make sense. Actually, all 3 of those deaths were a quite a bit unbelievable.

The Lois twist was very good, though. Okay, not talking anymore.

Bryan Singer Is NOT Doing Superman: Man of Steel

Interview here:

http://movieblog.ugo.com/index.php/m..._man_of_steel/

Michael Corvin 12-05-08 01:18 PM

How did you get "Not doing Superman: Man of Steel" out of the following:

JH: But there is talk of a new film, though. Are you officially involved in this talk of the new film?

BS: I am not officially involved in the talk, no.

JH: But when talk happens they’ll call you.

BS: Well it’s, you know, I have relationships with Warner Brothers and with the character and, and, and, and it’s just the way things work out.

JH: But you are not divorced from Superman at this point.

BS: No.
Still sounds up in the air to me. I could care less either way. It's not like he hit it out of the park the first time.

fumanstan 12-05-08 01:23 PM

Yeah, sounds just like he's on the sidelines waiting to see what the studio wants to do and if they want to use him or not.

Hokeyboy 12-05-08 02:06 PM

I got a sneaking suspicion that if Valkyrie dies, so goes Warner's interest in a Bryan Singer sequel. If the advance reviews of that film are indication, this looks like it will be the case.

I really don't mind if that's the case, either. Singer really hasn't blown me away in any film he's done SINCE "Usual Suspects" (I liked X2 and many parts of Superman Returns, but both were flawed, the latter much moreso than the former.)

The property needs time to breathe, to find a filmmaker with vision and dedication and love for (and understanding for) the CHARACTER... NOT the previous films.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!

WB looking at anyone but Luthor for next Superman villain.

According to my sources, the WB is actively hearing takes from writers for a new SUPERMAN movie. WB is committed to re-making SUPERMAN into an interesting franchise.

At the moment, the execs haven't heard anything they like yet but the kicker is that WB wants a NEW VILLAIN from Superman's Rogues Gallery to be the main antagonist...NOT LEX LUTHOR! Writers have been told to come in to the studio to pitch a story with a new villain but again, the WB hasn't bit on anything they heard yet.

In fact, Luthor is going to take a back seat. Whether he is altogether out or reduced to a contagonist character in the new script remains to be seen.

Personally, I think this is the way to go. Worked at first for Batman back in 2005, why not Supes?

Now I know that goes contrary to what Kevin Spacey said a couple of weeks ago, but I'm just relaying what I'm told...

So could we be seeing BRAINIAC, DARKSEID, DOOMSDAY, or even ZOD battling Supes on the big screen in the near future?
