So is this a prequel to Returns? An immediate reboot and pretending Returns never happened? Or a sequel to Returns?

I don't think I will go see the sequel if it ever does come out, Super Bastard ruined it for me.

I'm not sure what to make of that video. I didn't hear anything about the movie filming and that looked more like a montage of clips from Returns.

However, I don't remember that scene with Routh going into the barn....so I'm confused.

If they can't come up with a good villian for SUPERMAN to go against why not add another DC hero and have them duke it out?

They have lots of great villians they can use, if they ever decide to start shooting the thing.

It had scenes from The Day the Earth Stood Still trailer AND Watchmen trailer, and it was mainly just scenes from Superman Returns, and as Chris pointed out, the credits attached to the end of the trailer said "Superman Returns". Not only that, but the audio on the audience cheering sounded pretty unconvincing. I'm not sure where they got the audio from, but it sounded poorly edited at one point in the video.

That was some of the footage that was left out of Returns, which I believe Singer once mentioned might be on the eventual double-dip DVD release. I thought to begin with we were looking at a promo for just such a release.

Edit -- just checked my copy of Superman Returns. All the shots of Routh are from the deleted scenes available on the 2-disc DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray versions.

It was a technical showcase, and a successful one as far as I'm concerned.

So is Man of Steel officially a go? Routh needs to get back on the big screen as Supes -- his career has not maintained the momentum from 2006 -- he starred in last week's Fear Itself on NBC.

No, it's not exactly in "development hell", either...but it's pretty close. I don't know that we'll ever see it.

I'm hoping that with the massive positive feedback on The Dark Knight, WB will find a way to greenlight The Man of Steel.

I didn't read the whole thread but it looks like Brian Singer is gone. I'm only somewhat disappointed. I'm in the minority that thought Superman Returns was a great film (I do have a Superman bias for the record). It had its flaws and was inferior to Batman Begins in my opinion but I still thought it was a lot of fun.

On the other hand I do think its time for Superman to take a different turn. Have Lex in the movie as a background villain and set the main villain up as someone else. Superman has some villains that could work and none of them seem to be big, pop culture wise, other than Lex Luthor which is why I think he should still be there albeit with a reduced role.

As for director, and I mentioned this with the Batman series if Nolan wants to step away, but I wouldn't mind all that much if David Fincher took over. He's got a great track record and I think he could make a great superhero movie.

Of course that is just wishful thinking. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if Warners was working on something for The Man of Steel considering the sucess of The Dark Knight. Shit, if it The Man of Steel does 70% of the box office that TDK did it would be a success.

I don't know what to say about the Superman franchise. I've said before I'm not a comic book fan, but I do think I know enough to know that Superman is a very GOOD guy. I wonder if there's not much interest in him because of his clean image and that he just doesn't seem very interesting. He's a huge, iconic comic book figure that everyone recognizes, but he has no box office draw anymore. It's just strange.

As far as Brian Singer being gone, is it too much to hope that he's working on the X3 that should have been made?

It's funny how I always see Fincher's name tossed out to take over a franchise. I've seen him mentioned over the past 10 years or so for Batman, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and now Superman. He did Alien 3, but he's never struck me as the type to want to get into a pre-existing film world since his films generally have their own tone and style. He'd probably feel cramped by not having the freedom afforded to starting from scratch.

On another note, I absolutely loved Superman Returns and really wish Singer would get to do his second, darker film that he has talked about. I do however feel that we've become too cynical as an audience to accept a hero who is essentially 100% good like Superman. He has no real shades of grey or darkness to him, and I don't think audiences respond so well to that after becoming enamored with darker heroes like Batman, Wolverine, and Iron Man. Spidey's essentially a boy scout too, but even he has some flaws, whereas the man of steel really doesn't have character flaws in the film versions.

Why can't Gene Hackman be Lex Luthor again? Was the role offered to him for these new Superman flicks?

He's retired from acting. Also, even though I love his performance as Lex Luthor, he seemed completely out of place in the Superman movies, like they directly ported in his lines from a much campier version of the script.

Yet he's still doing those damn voice-overs for Lowe's.

IMO, all you need for a big box office from a Superman movie is to get the hype machine rolling...

step 1: Sign a very respected director
step 2: Leak a basic plot written by a good writer.
step 3: Sign a well respected actor to play the villain

All of a sudden you'll have people lining up. All things considered with Superman Returns, it did have a pretty big opening but the mediocre word of mouth and the fact that Pirates opened the very next weekend killed it.

Now the mediocre word of mouth will likely hurt the next Superman movie in the box office but if the movie is good it will make plenty of money.

I was talking with my friend about this the other day, but I would like to see the Cohen Bros. take a shot at directing... I think the key to these comic book movies are good "writing" directors and not necessarily good "action" directors, although I think the Cohens could pull off some decent action.
