Beverly Hills Cop:

In the Beverly Hills police department, Taggart is questioning Foley about his business with Victor Maitland.

Tensions rise, and Taggart says, "We're more likely to believe an important local businessman than a foul-mouthed jerk from out of town."

In the original, Foley retorts, "Oh, foul-mouthed? Fuck you, man."

In the edited-for-TV version broadcast in the early '90s, Foley instead says, "Oh, foul-mouthed? Then you have a pig face."

Some movies they edit everything. Even stuff that isn't even bad. Bizarre.

I think movies should have words edited, Roman Moronie style

What a great thread.

I can't remember certain lines, but I was watching 'The Departed' recently on FX and it seemed like the entire movie was dubbed over.

Another one was 'Blade Trinity' on TNT. Hannibal King has a sticker on him that says, "Hello my name is F*ck You" ... and on TNT it says, "Hello my name is Suck You" Which i found hilarious.

haha! Hello my name is Suck you!

They just played Knocked Up on regular channel tv the other day - that was an entertaining one too. I think they used "screw" a lot as a replacement for "fuck."

There are edited for TV movies from like the 80's, where they edit so much, that it seems way worse than it is.

The tv version of "Stand by Me".

During the pie eating contest, the audience chants "lard!" over and over.

Re: Edited for TV lines, that are better/funnier than the original?

Just in general, I don't get editing "God damn" to become "damn."

But I gave up cable a while back so all of this editing is a thing of the past. Also a reason I never watched movies on TV.

its the whole 'don't use the lords name in vein'

Ive noticed some cable tv prints are more lax in censoring, only now muting the cuss words, & some even allowing the word 'shit' w out muting

Re: Edited for TV lines, that are better/funnier than the original?

The one that always sticks in my mind is the TV edit of "Police Academy". In the theatrical version, after Hooks runs the car over Copelands feet, he swears and refers to her by a racial epithet, incurring the wrath of Hightower. In the TV version, it gets changed to "gosh darn nincompoop". Which, clearly, would not provoke the kind of reaction it gets from Hightower.

Re: Edited for TV lines, that are better/funnier than the original?

I used to watch some of these movies on television when I was younger and never minded the dubbing over of swear words. You shouldn't cuss on regular TV. But seeing this thread, it makes me wonder what the people were thinking when they decided swear words in movies were offensive but torture, murder, and violence is perfectly fine.

In Angus (1995) they say "Adenoid" instead of asshole.

Re: Edited for TV lines, that are better/funnier than the original?

I remember a basic cable edit of Billy Madison that replaced one mention of "Snack Pack" with "Lunch Pack". "Snack Pack" is said five times in the original scene, but I only remember this line being dubbed over: "You know I like Snack Pack, why can't you just gimme a LUNCH Pack?!"

I'm stiff baffled by this.
