Down South, it will be called "The Thang".
I love the original and Carpenter's version. I'll go see this one and give it a chance.

This actually doesn't look terrible IMO
Hard to judge the effects properly but the CGI looks fine.

Alright..I'm really digging this. I better still get my ending though. I want this film to end the way it should. Now that I look at it...I guess this is kind of what Predators was in the sense of remaking Predator without literally remaking it..but being a prequel in this case instead of a sequel.

Re: THE THING: prequel
I was hoping for a video game tie-in with this (looks like there is a comic instead) and would have loved to see the old Xbox version get an HD facelift! Loved that game though technically a sequel to the first movie.

I'm with you. They really should have stayed completely away from CGI, and try to recreate some of the great effect work that made the original such a standout. I'm really getting sick of CGI overuse in today's movies, and I'm REALLY fucking tired of CGI blood. PLEASE STOP

FYI, Thing nerds...
Apparently sometime tomorrow creaturefeatures.com is going to put tickets on sale for a screening of The Thing (1982) @ the Arclight w/ cast & crew appearing and exclusive merch available.
You better believe my ass is getting tickets.

I saw THE THING in 1982 and was amazed.
Also the actress in the trailer looked hot in DIE HARD 4 and now has packed on some pounds.

Well, at least Mary-Elizabeth Winstead is prettier than Kurt Russel . Although I don't know if I can EVER forgive Eric Heisserer for the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.
It just looks to me like she's wearing bulky winter gear.

Re: THE THING: prequel
I saw THE THING with a packed audience this past friday, of which, maybe 25% raised their hand when the hosts asked if this was their first time. The theater was silent throughout (one drunk woman started chattering right at the blood test scene and another viewer drug her out to the lobby (it was established at the start of the night any talking would be met with ejection)) save for a few chuckles and moments where all hell breaks loose. The movie holds up beautifully and is just as creepy and effective.

Re: THE THING: prequel
Avatar had some damn fine cgi in there. Benjamin Button had some very well done and controlled as fuck cgi, to the point that some people may not know it was an effect of that kind. We had the new Apes film w/ Caesar (for the most part)...great job by Serkis too. Uhhhhhhh....District 9 had some good stuff too. I'd also say that Tree of Life had some wildly amazing cgi on some parts. I'd actually would like to know about those reptilian creations

An amazing cgi effect? Well that depends on what you're looking for. For me...

Now I do remember one movie that knocked me out.
THE WOLF MAN had mixed make-up with cgi for transformation scenes.

Re: THE THING: prequel
no offense..but...for the most part on the large scale...it's pretty easy to spot the big CGI. the "amazed" effect you're looking for...well...you know it's cgi. Sooo when can it NOT be known as cgi? that's the amazing part. I think Fincher is probably one of those directors that does it amazingly well.

Agreed. The writing team and the unestablished director are the two big question marks for me. I'm cautiously optimistic though -- the previews have looked pretty good, imo.

Re: THE THING: prequel
I think CGI is the wrong thing to do for this movie in particular. But I was very impressed with CGI in District 9. Probably some of the best I've seen ever.
CGI is very effecting with non organic things (structures, machines) but when it comes to organic living things(D9 being the exception for me), it just can't quite do it. IMO, of course.
That said, I WILL be rushing to see this
