I liked the film just fine as it was. Not as good as Heat or Collateral but still enjoyable.

There are two common complaints that I've heard.. one group wanted the 80's cheese of the original and another group wanted a balls-to-the-walls action flick with cute catch phrases (which is how it was apparently marketed as). I went in not having seen much of the original show nor any of the trailers and was quite satisfied with what I saw.

I don't think they should have cast the originals, but I do think they should have kept the tone of the TV series. I don't think there was a big market for a serious take on Miami Vice. Why would there be? To quote a friend, "They play it straight? Screw that. Let's go see that new Will Ferrell movie."

If it wasn't played "straight" then it would've been Starsky & Hutch and Michael Mann would not have been involved. That doesn't sound that good to me.

Michael Mann was enough involved in the original Miami Vice that I think he could have pulled it off just fine if he wanted to. He just didn't want to, which is certainly his prerogative, but that doesn't mean the summer movie going public is going to line up for it. I personally think he is a great talent mind you. Maybe this was just a bad idea all around. I sure was excited when I first heard about it though. Oh well.

Remove the Miami Vice title, and its just another generic cop action flick. Aside from the character names, there is nothing that connects it to the series.

They should have made the movie right after the series ended. I remember they were tossing the idea around. The show in the end when no one was watching it was actually getting better. It got darker and more serious. They even had the cool story arc where Sonny became a bad guy 'cause he lost his memory.

It was kind of a strange idea to make a movie based on a hit TV show, then not really base it on it at all. I think it's safe to say that attaching the 'Miami Vice' name hurt this movie. Any fan of the show got something completely different, and anyone who didn't like the show probably avoided this in fear that it would be similar. In the end, it was really unnecessary. As someone said already, the only thing that was kept the same was the character names. The movie could have simply had a different title and different character names (with Colin Farrell looking less...you know) and boom, cool new Michael Mann movie with no predisposed (I think that's the word I'm looking for) ideas about the movie.

But regardless, I think the movie should do all right on DVD. As long as they cut out the whole Cuba part of the movie.

I thought the movie was okay, but was disappointed overall. They followed the formula of a TV ep. of the show to a T IMO, but they eliminated the cheese and a lot of action, which in all honesty is what a lot of Miami Vice fans liked about the show in the first place, and people about it despized. In short, they had to market a movie that lacked what the loyalists wanted, and everyone else refused to see based on its existence.

FWIW, this movie could have made a lot more IMO if they had taken the Charlie's Angels approach. They could have had the movie take place in the 80s, blasted the music to the max, and cast Will Ferrell as Crockett and maybe Will Smith as Tubbs. They would have had to get an entirely different director of course, as it would be a comedy at heart, but don't tell me it wouldn't have opened huge if it also got a PG-13 rating.

Very poor international box office. According to boxofficemojo, it's only made a little more than $8M. So far, the movie has grossed about $63M Worldwide.

Yep thats what happens when you make a movie on a show and word gets out it has lilttle to nothing to do with the actual show, then top it off with a half ass story that drags on and on.

I dont get the whole cheese crap everyone says about the tv show, at the time it was kick ass mucic, cool stories, and style that made the show what it was, not this stupid chesse crap eveyones going on about, yeah its cheesy now, but it sure as hell wasnt 17 yrs ago.

I'm going to go out on a limb and think most people 25 and under are like me and think of those two as just total loser washed up has-beens. I grew up thinking of them as nothing but punchlines. Maybe old people hold them in higher regard because apparently people liked the TV series but if you're getting zero interest from the 16-25 crowd for a movie like this you're going to bomb hard.
