I thought the film was OK, there really should of been a story that was easier to follow though, as well as more action.
Gong Li was nice
Though Farrell looked like an 80's Mel Gibson at times with his hair

I don't think anything could have raised the box office on this flick. I'm a fan of Mann's films and I thought he did a great job on Vice. My only real complaint would be that he placed a little too much emphasis on the relationships developing within the story and not enough time on some more action. For a 2 1/2 hour film it did feel a bit light on the action, but that's only a minor complaint. If someone (since Mann wouldn't have done it) made a Vice film today with a haggard Johnson and Thomas it would have surely tanked much harder since old school fans probably wouldn't have been into seeing their favorite stars reduced to a bad mid-budget film and it wouldn't have much appeal to the newer gen of filmgoers. Good box office or not, it was a good film and that's what matters most.

I enjoyed this movie tremendously, so I agree with you that, from an artistic standpoint, BO doesn't matter.
But in the big picture, BO is all that matters. Poor box office on a movie this expensive calls into question the number of opportunities Mann will continue to get to make the movies he wants to make.

I don't think they should have cast the originals, but I do think they should have kept the tone of the TV series. I don't think there was a big market for a serious take on Miami Vice.
I think the common conception of Miami Vice being "cheese" or a fashion faux pas has greatly dominated over the gritty storylines (that nearly everyone seems to have forgotten) once the show was already well off the air and the 80's had ended...

That would be like making a CSI movie in 20 years and making it a comedy. Miami Vice was very gritty.
The problem is that anything in the 80's seems pretty comical to us these days. So making any real theme connection to the original without doing a serious take would be taken as Starsky and hutch 2.
