I agree with the general consensus here. Good, on par with the first, but not fantastic! Right?

Note to studios: KEEP IT TO 2 HOURS OR LESS PLEASE

Sheesh, the last thing I want to do after plunking down $10 is to look at my watch.

I'd just like to point this out:

odds that pirates will be the highest grossing movie of the year = 5:1.
odds that pirates will win best picture of the year = 943,233,213,451:1

- The other ship going into Tortuga

- The cannibal action sequence
- The end action sequences
I agree with the first two, but I don't think you could even consider cutting the last two...maybe TRIM them a bit, but they are two of the best sequences in the movie.

I'd say cut the whole ship that picks up Elizabeth as a boy/haunted ghost and then later picks up Will and get's Kraken'd. Drop that whole bit.

I'd get rid of most of the first 20 minutes...open the movie with Will on the run, Elizabeth escaping jail and trying to find Jack. Start with Jack on Cannibal island and then have a shortened version of the first Bootstrap scene.

I think they could have done without the whole "100 souls" aspect. Depp should have just sent Will in his stead and got the hell out of dodge, instead of trying to recruit souls in Tortuga, just head out looking for the chest. It'd also shorten a bit of the frivolous Davy Jones and Co. stuff.

I think with those tweaks, you'd be able to lose almost 40 minutes and not miss anything major.

How funny was it to see the guy pop out of the well spitting out water?

If i'm not mistaken that is taken directly from the ride at disney world.

I haven't been to disney in 13 years but if I remember correctly that part is from the ride.

Except the re-introduction of Norrington.

There's nothing I would want cut after one viewing anyway. I agree it felt like an extended cut, and that's one of the things I loved about it. I usually like all the extra little scenes that get added back in extended cuts, so I was happy so see them their to begin with rather than just sticking 100% of one main plot.

Spoiler:
Establishes Elizabeth as a 'do-anything' to get what she wants. Setups/explains/justifies the wedding dress, the female curse, the tricking of the crew to go to tortuga, and what, the reveal to will that she's trying to find him.

Spoiler:
You can't have Liz escaping from jail without *some* explanation as to why. The entire plot is predicated off of this.

Spoiler:
it's totally in character with depp. and this is how norrington comes back into the picture.

I don't think these scenes are cuttable. Maybe replaceable with something shorter. But they all have value within the context of the movie.

then characters magiclly appear from island to island? those scenes were important to established how Elizabeth gets to place to place.

then where would norrington come in? Those scenes may have seemed long but they were a must to bring in characters.

You would miss a lot of things and bring into question how characters got around.

Saw dmc today and thought it was okay. But I still think the first movie was far better. I definitely appreciate it more now.

Really missed Keira wearing her dress and Geoff Rush bringing in the badass pirate. The Davy Jones character just looked so silly. It really was distracting.

But aside from all that, I thought the storyline was solid.

Just curious what movie you think will out-gross it.

I had no problems at all with the pacing and loved every minute of this. Part III can't come fast enough for me now .

Yep, I also had NO problems with the pacing of the film. I would have happily sat through Part 3 immediately after this one ended.

at this rate all three movies back to back will total around 7 and half hours of screen time.

d2cheer, I wasn't trying to change anyone's opinion. I was simply curious as to what people would change. Like I said people throw the "too long" criticism around so much (at all films), that now it means nothing. It's like saying the same word over and over again until it loses meaning. I just feel it's a criticism anyone and everyone uses, often without thinking of the implications of it.

I found it annoying, and like you said, on the internet people are free to post their opinions. I posted mine. I didn't tell anyone to delete their's or call them wrong. I find it funny you are complaining to me about letting people post their opinion and then complaining about my opinion.

Sorry you thought I was being a hound. I did not mean to be.

Anyway these films aren't so much about the plot, but the characters. So I wouldn't cut out Ragetti and Pintel, I find them hilarious.

With people actually getting specific, I can see and understand what some people would cut out or shorten, and looking at it from their view, it makes sense. Tortuga and the cannibal sequence could have been shortened, certainly. I wouldn't, too many great character moments. In fact, the whole Tortuga sequence was my favorite. They nailed the insanity and joy of this film in a great action sequence. The action would not have meant much to me if they did not build up to it.

At least now, however, I can see another's opinion clearly. Before I couldn't understand other's issues with the film because they did not back it up. But now my mind has been opened and their opinions make sense. That's all I was looking for.

I am really tired of also hearing the to long aspect. I prefer a long movie, get my moneys worth. I didnt hear a single complain about Return of the King being to long at 3hours 31minutes. People still wanted more (and got it with the extended edition). I hope Gore releases a 3+ hour extended edition on DVD. I would rather have a movie be way to long, than a crap 80minute Posideon POS film... I left this movie wanting more but knew more is coming, in the way of POTC III: At Worlds End!!!

I loved it. It was perfect summer fare for me. The acting, direction, effects were all top notch. It didn't seem overly long to me, in fact, I was taken aback when it ended because I had lost all track of time. I'll probably go back and see it again next weekend.

I can't wait for part 3!

I'm confused about the mark on Jack's hand? What does it mean? Is it related to the compass?

BTW: about the run time, it wasn't too bad. What was bad was sitting through all the end credits just to see the short clip at the end that some people were talking about at imdb. SO not worth it!

I heard plenty of people (even on these forums) say "The end went on forever."
