^^ Going off that, I'm assuming he didn't like the first either.

These are the odd films that succeed in stirring neither the emotions nor the mind.
So says you Todd McCarthy. Good thing I never listen to you or give your reviews any credence.

Going off that, I'm assuming he didn't like the first either.
He gave it a barely positive review. He said and I quote:

"Still, the picture's constant forward movement and breezy sense of amusement about itself provide a certain mild sort of diversion."

Faint praise if I've ever seen it.

As for the length of the film, it's about the same as the first film. The first film was just shy of two and half hours.

I agree. He's often patronizing and more than a little pretentious. Variety's insistence on using the incredibly irritating "pic" instead of "film" or "movie" make it even worse.

Reviews cannot stop this film from being a huge hit. Now, if this one sucks, POTC 3 might not do so well, but this one is in the bag.

Johnny Depp made the first film.
I'm sure he will be the highlight of this one, too.

Anyone else in the role would have made the movie suck.

While I don't think it'll beat Spider-Man's opening weekend record, I do think POTC2 will make around $100 million this weekend. After that, who knows. Even if this film is good enough for audiences, I'm not sure part 3 will do as well next year. People may be sick of pirates by that point. But with Depp in the lead, you never know.

Interesting that if you are a moviegoer this summer and want to partake, it is almost certain you will be spending over two hours in the theater to do so. Superman Returns is also two and a half hours, so if its take is hurt by this movie, they can't blame running time, or if vice verca occurs.

Well said.

This is my most anticipated summer movie and I'm looking forward to watching it this weekend.

What I don't really understand is why they need to do a third one. True, this one might be huge but having another roll out so soon (next summer is it?) might be overkill. I have heard that this one is pretty self-contained, so I cannot imagine why they need a sequel so soon, I say let people whet their appetites.

Ask yourself why they needed to make Return of the Jedi and you'll answer your question. The second one has a sort of a cliffhanger that leads to the third one.

I'm a fan of Matrix Reloaded and didn't like Revolutions. I think most really hated part 3, but I also think everyone was Matrixed out since it was only released about 5 months after part 2, which was hugely successful. Reloaded also ended with a cliffhanger. While I don't think this series will do worse than the Matrix trilogy, there is a chance it'll follow a similar trend with people being burnt out on pirates.

I'd say POTC 3 will still do better than Revolutions did

That would be HUGE considering the run time.
It'll be playing on roughly the same number of screens as Superman, it'll be competing with (an albeitly weakened) second week run of Superman and you're predicting it'll draw nearly twice as many viewers as Superman did last weekend? Bold move man....(granted, its not like your life or living depends on the prediction).

I just hope its entertaining.

Well, it is the film that really is the tent pole for this summer season as it cuts across all demographics and if the opening lines for the pirates ride are any indication, this one has the writting on the wall to be rather huge.

But yeah, second week Superman competition may toss some cash around the two. It'll be one hell of a busy weekend.

Right now, it's got a 60% rating on rottentomatoes, with 18 positive and 12 negative reviews.

So tell us Jack, which takes more time: watching this two and a half hour movie, or standing in line for the ride? (I remember waiting close to two hours for some rides before.)

Yeah, I'm not against a long run time if the film's good or the story requires it, but for these types of films I always tend to use Raiders of the Lost Ark's run time of 115min as the benchmark. Imo a perfectly paced film, with enough to satisfy yet leave you wanting more.

But hey, if they want to spend more money and give us more bang for our buck I won't argue.

but even for the first film, 143 minutes moved pretty briskly.
