Laurie's friends were using cell phones, meaning it was probably present day - So the beginning should have been about 1990? As far as cell phones, the only one that can be sen throughout the movie is Lommis'. None of the teenagers use them. |
Jeez - Shows how much this movie bored me...I can't recall a lot of simple details from it! I could have sworn that Linda used one at some point. Again, maybe i'm wrong.

And I have been a big fan of RZ's movies, until this one. It was...in a word....stupid. He (Zombie) should never have made this film; it will alienate many fans of his first two films, which had some style, smarts and uniqueness. |
This movie was pretty dissapointing...There were some very good moments but most of the film was very bad.
The chick who played Laurie was absolutely horrible! I wanted so bad for her to die everytime she was on screen so i wouldn't have to watch her anymore(same with the other two chicks as her friends.) Rob Zombie cannot direct children apparently because everyone under the age of 25 in his films sucks. I really like all the cameos and Malcolm Mcdowell, and Brad Dourif and the scenes they were in but other than that there is very little in this film to enjoy. |

She was suppose to be boring, she never went out...Etc...ETc
Still, each to their own. I remember loving H20, but now I don't enjoy it near as much. In fact, as far as sequels and enjoyment goes, I actually enjoy Halloween 6: 'The Curse of MIchael Myers'. |
1. "Halloween," $31 million.
slashed its way to a $31 million haul over the four-day weekend, surpassing the $20.1 million gross for 2005's "Transporter 2," which had held the record for best Labor Day opening. Led by "Halloween," Hollywood set a new overall record for Labor Day, with the top 12 movies taking in $119.6 million, surpassing the previous high of $106.1 million in 2003. "`Halloween' was far beyond anything we've seen on Labor Day," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "It was just a perfect ending to a perfect summer. Hopefully, we can do this every year." |

Just kidding. On a serious note, I thought this was his best effort to date and loved the cinematography. I also thought the directing was solid throughout as well. |
The film did have some good cinematography, namely the sequence when Laurie comes in to find Annie and Michael is in the same room. That was a excellent scene, due to the lighting (or lack of). And as always, Zombie did deliver on showing just brutal the murders would be (namely the first death scene). I have no doubt the man has an eye , but I question on exactly what he wanted this movie to be. Did he want it to be his original take? If so, why copy the original movie in the second half? Did he want it to be a prequel? That is one of the biggest problems with the movie, lack of direction in the most general of senses.

Having watched both versions now - I find the workprint version to vastly superior, minus the rape scene. In fact, if the workprint had been the version released, my opinion on the film would of increased greatly, while it is still not a great film, it is better paced, has more of the stalking element that the original had and has a vastly superior ending.

There is far too much effort to humanize the young Michael Myers, and waste nearly half the film doing so. In Carpenter's original, he was a soulless freak of nature, sheer, irredeemable evil as Dr. Loomis pointed out. Here, we're actually rooting for him to bump off his early victims, especially the slimy lout stepfather.
Carpenter used the extra screen time that he had to ratchet up the suspense by having Myers stalk the unsuspecting teenagers, appearing and disappearing so that the audience, but not the characters saw him. Zombie plays with that a little, but has Laurie spot him far too early. The biggest difference is that Laurie in this film is no Jamie Lee Curtis. She's just a screaming teenager who is only differentiated from her soon-to-be-dead friends by the fact that she is slightly less sex-obsessed than they are. The final showdown between the two lacks the punch that Jamie Lee easily provided. |

I thought of another question about this version Halloween and I'm curious how they handled it in the original:

Saw it on Sunday and the (vast majority of) reviews are spot on - what a laughably awful piece of crap. I would list all of the things I disliked about it, but most of them have already been pointed out, nor do I care enough to spend that much time talking about this garbage when there are better things - and better movies - to spend time on. By about the halfway point, I was done, finished, and ready to leave - and that was before the incoherent quick-cut shaky-cam scenes began. To me, this is one of those movies that is so jaw-droppingly incompetent that it could easily be used in film classes to illustrate how not to make a good movie. I've said it before and I'll say it again - crap that occasionally looks slightly polished thanks to a large budget is still crap.
Oh, and for the record - I'm a big horror movie fan, enjoyed Devil's Rejects and thought it was pretty skillfully made, love a lot of Rob Zombie's music, and love the original Halloween but am not at all biased against remakes that are actually good (to reuse an example already pointed out by another poster, I love the original Dawn of the Dead and thought the remake was fantastic as well). |
