Probably because his stop-motion work is well known, and nobody else from that era of stop-motion is still alive.

I understand the point, but people should not dismiss a new film just because it's a remake - if it's a bad film, sure, go nuts. But what if someone has a new, fresh take on the subject material again? One might argue that James Cameron did, with a shape-shifting monster in Terminator 2.

They should set it in a high school this time, with the Faculty members being taken over one by one.

I wouldn't mind a sequel, the thing is one of the coolest monster villains ever.

Sounds like no one has anything more concrete than a hearsay account from another director on an XM radio interview. I think I'll wait until I actually hear Romero say he wants to do it before I start my conniption.

Wasn't Ridley Scott supposed to be working on a Sci-Fi channel remake/prequel to this a while back? Haven't heard anything on it in some time, so perhaps that fell through (thankfully).

What they need to do is a short on what happened to the guys after the credits rolled.

No remake. The Thing is still one of the creepiest movies period. CGI has it's place, but when the "real" effects of Carpenter's movie are almost perfect...

Ok, perhaps the effects weren't perfect, but they still hold up and the accomplish exactly what they were meant to do....give me the willies. I'm not even sure about a sequel....

About the only reason for a remake I can think of is to be able to use CGI, and even that is not a very good reason as the pre-CGI effects of Carpenter's film surpassed the state of the art at the time and still hold up today and always will.
Both are classics and are able to each stand on their own as great horror movies of their time.Tho time and advances in filmaking may make the original seem quaint in comparison it in no way is "blown away" by the remake.
I actually think the famous "KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES!"ending of Hawkes movie is much more satisfying then Carpenters.
