Re: The Golden Raspberry Awards / Razzie Awards Thread

Movie-making is an entertainment-for-profit industry, enjoyable for what it is, but completely undeserving of being placed upon a pedestal for worshipping or taken so seriously. Anything that takes the piss out of it from time to time (think Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes) is okay with me.

Sorry, Decker ...

If you think the Oscars aren't important, that's fine. Feel free to ignore them. But for movie-making and for the industry itself, they absolutely are. That's not really debatable.

And if you think the Razzies are garbage - then feel free to ignore it as well.
I think they exist to entertain - basically a spoof on the Oscars... even if I don't necessarily find them entertaining myself.

The Oscars are important for the movie-making industry, but as a viewer of films - I don't find much value in what they offer.
It's a circle-jerk of self-important people thinking their opinion is important to the rest of us. They're not.

Re: The Golden Raspberry Awards / Razzie Awards Thread

The razzies are long past the point where they're taking the piss out of movies. Or even entertaining. There was a time when it was more or less in good fun and it was even better when some of the winners played along. Now it's just a weird and mean spirited exercise in "look at me". It's completely pointless. You might say the same about the Oscars, but they're at least important to someone. I'm not sure the razzies even meet that criteria.

Re: The Golden Raspberry Awards / Razzie Awards Thread

The Razzies... aren't relevant anymore. There's already enough snark on the internet, and there's really no point in them anymore. You only ever really hear about them whenever they do something like this or the Bruce Willis thing. Nobody cares. The original mandate of the Razzies seemed to be to poke fun at bad, overwrought, or over-hyped mainstream movies and the actors who made them. These days there's just such a general blandness to everything Hollywood does that they end up nominating the little girl in that Firestarter remake that barely made a blip anywhere.

The Oscars... the one night every year where Hollywood puts on tuxedos and fancy dresses, borrowed bling-bling, and walks down a red carpet to a big circle jerk and gives itself a four hour handjob on live tv that lasts so long the eleven o'clock local news is delayed.

I used to think this but then I learned about “Awards Season” and realized it’s not the one night of the year. They’ve been dressing up for months going from awards show to awards show jerking each other off. Granted the other shows aren’t live on national tv, but still…

Someone like Meryl Streep probably has an entire room, literally filled from floor to ceiling with awards. It’s almost comical how many awards they hand out in Hollywood.

Don't forget the film festivals, a nearly continuous stream of opportunities where they can all dress up and give that circle-jerkoffery a series of test runs, particularly in the last third of the year when the fest circuit dovetails with the award ceremonies.

Expendables 4 the Oppenheimer equivalent for the worst movie of 2023 with 7 nominations

Maybe not worst movie but it was not good either.

The most-nominated film is “Expend4bles,” the fourth entry in the action-packed, but critically underwhelming, “The Expendables” franchise. It received seven nominations. Tied for second place with five noms are “The Exorcist: Believer,” the revival of the classic horror series, and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a blood-soaked take on everyone’s favorite honey-loving bear. Two big-budget superhero movies, DC’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” both got four nominations.

Two Jason Statham movies!!!

I only saw part of Meg 2 and that was enough.

At least he has sort of redeemed himself with The Beekeeper...

Russell Crowes performance in Popes Exorcist wasn’t a bad performance.

WORST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mel Gibson / Confidential Informant
They might be able to replace that retired Bruce Willis category with a Mel Gibson category soon, as he’s increasingly popping up in similar movies from similar producers with similar co-stars. Admittedly, he seems to put in more effort than Willis was obviously capable of during his run, but the movies themselves aren’t much better in terms of overall quality, and he could start coasting if he makes enough of them (assuming he’s not yet - I haven’t seen many of his newer ones). Gibson only had two of these DTV things in 2023, but he had, like five in 2022, and a couple scheduled for 2024 so far (BOYS OF SUMMER and THE BONEYARD, the latter from a genuine hack).

Re: The Golden Raspberry Awards / Razzie Awards Thread

Jonathan Rhys Meyers could be a nominee every year but maybe he has suffered enough and don't want to pile it on.

As much as I dislike the “Razzies” I can’t argue that Meg 2 isn’t worthy of Worst Picture. Is there something lower than a Razzie? That’s where Meg 2 belongs.

I have taped Meg 2 but always erase it when space is about to run out on my DVR and might keep prolonging this until it disappears from HBO and ends up on TNT.

If you keep running out of DVR space, there are some issues here.

Not as many issues as recording Meg 2 in the first place.

I don’t get the pile-on for Ghosted. It was a perfectly fine, disposable “action rom-com” with some decent set pieces. Hardly the worst of the year.

Hell, if they are looking for Netflix streaming movies to criticize, Rebel Moon should be sweeping the categories.

Re: The Golden Raspberry Awards / Razzie Awards Thread

Joker was a Oscar darling in 2025 and its sequel 5 years later is up for seven Razzies.

Jon Voight got nominated for 4 roles for worst supporting actor?

The annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.

For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. The “Joker” sequel was poorly reviewed out of its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and wound up a box office bomb, grossing $206 million worldwide against a $200 million production budget. In comparison, the first “Joker” earned more than $1 billion globally, with Phoenix winning the Oscar for best actor.
