Trailer: Ultraviolet (merged)

I'm a huge fan of Equilibrium, but I still haven't decided whether I'm gonna see Ultraviolet in theaters. As nearly everyone in this thread has pointed out, it just looks like Aeon Flux and Underworld but with gun kata. I would much rather see Dave Chappelle's Block Party and 16 Blocks this weekend.

Tough decisions to make in my area this weekend.
All opening around here:
Dave Chapelle's Block Party
16 Blocks (How about Dave Chapelle's 16 Block Party? It could be a buddy movie!)
Ultraviolet
Knightwatch-the Russian weird-o-rama
I'm kind of bashful on Ultraviolet when I heard of all the cuts they made, and most of the time I find that any movie that started as R and became PG-13 was kind of shitty to start with and cut itself to maximize opening weekend potential. I might be more interested if they just put Milla onscreen and have her exercise in her outfits for about an hour and a half.

Saw it. If you're looking for something that is practically anime on the big screen, look no further than this flick. However, with that comes the style over substance, little plot, and looking at things just because they look neat, not to mention what sounds like looping meant to simulate that style. In short, get crunked and check it out. This also does more justice to Aeon Flux than the Theron movie did, especially the aspect of killing lots of people and
Negative side: Milla Jevovich may look nice, but she has got to be one of the WORST actresses working today. Lord help us if she ever pairs up with Tara Reid for anything.

This movie ain't for everyone, that's for sure, in fact, it's not for much of anyone outside of horny sci-fi/genre geeks.

I really think this guy's career is over after this. Either Equilibrium was a fluke or Christian Bale completely carried the movie.

FWIW, I thought the movie was good and stylish until
It was like they tried to throw a bit of The Professional into the storyline, and failed.

Well, it was as bad as most folks have made it out to be. What really kills it is the exposition of thoughts by Violet, there's just nothing all that interesting going on, and the lack of true menace and danger really sucks the life out of the action scenes, and they all start to just look like CGI exercises instead of actually progressing the story at all. I also kept asking myself, "who the hell is she posing for after she just slaughters 20 bad guys?"
It might actually be okay if you could watch it in double-time speed, that might give the appearance of something of worth was at stake, and by the time the END comes, you will have only spent 43 minutes on the film and not felt as bad wasting that hour on it.
I give it 1.5 stars, or a grade of D+.

To the people who are giving this film negative reviews---did you like Equilibrium? In other words, if I liked Equilibrium, will I like this? Or is it significantly worse?

The director was making a movie in the style of comic books. The dialog, barely existant plot and forced drama are all directly out of comics. If those lines were in a word ballon, it'd be lauded as a classic. It doesnt work on the big screen, but I'm not sure it was meant to. It fails because it succeeds at what it was aiming for. So it's good, because it's good at being bad. (Confusing, but it makes sense to me).
The CGI effects looked like they were purposley rendered 4 or 5 levels below anything approaching realism, and the dialog is delivered in a stilted manner by everyone. But that sort of shifts all your focus to the action and the imagery. There are a number of shots that could double as epic comic book covers.
So...believe it or not.. I'm going to say this is a good movie.

i saw this movie because i enjoy kurt wimmer's work (equilibrium) and i thought this would be good; i think he took a step way down, because although the budget is bigger, things look 10 times more fake and it was just a bit too CGI for me; this has got to be one of the worst CGI jobs i've ever seen EVER; either the movie was way too rushed or they tried to do too much with the budget they have, and it shows.
the movie had a lot of potential, but overall i was diappointed. i don't regret going to see it though, because it did have its entertaining moments; for fans of equilibrium, YES, you will see Gun-Kata again; YES, you will see Mila kill bunches of guys who surround her in a circle; yes, you see swords and guns galore; and Yes, there is a finale where the hero dresses in all white and kills a bunch of faceless minions in facemasks and suits. In a way, he took Equilibrium and just changed the scenery, yet the final product was worse because the way things were shot they just looked so fake it was absurd. Almost like it was done purposely (I don't think it was initially, but when the result didn't look that great they decided, well, we'll just make it look even MORE CGI and then say it was a stylistic choice.) I think it's the latter.
Nothing was original (IF you've seen Equilibrium) I hope Wimmer's not a one-trick pony, because rather than build upon what he started in Equilibrium, I think he decided to just reuse it and package it in poorly done CGI. (i still can't get over this fact. the CGI was TERRIBLE. it looked like a MTV music video CGI clip. have you EVER seen Britney Spears's Video for "Toxic?" Or remember the finale from "Torque?" Ultraviolet's look is EXACTLY the same for the FULL DURATION. EXACTLY. i can understand that as a "stylistic" choice for a 3 minute music video, but for a 90 minute full length feature film directed by a talented director, i expected more.
all my friends trashed the film after they saw it, making fun of me for liking parts of it, and they rubbed in my face the fact it got 4% positive reviews on rottentomatoes.com, as the critics have reviled this movie. i say go see it and decide for yourself. if you want to see some more gun-kata and a hot babe, hey, that's worth a few bucks to me.
recommended with strong reservations.

I agree about the CGI. I hate when people are overly picky when the CGI isn't perfect but it really is awful. The motorcycle chase was cringe inducing. It's barely up to Playstation One cinematic standards.
They also decided to put some kind of CGI makeup on everyone so that they look like plastic. I can kind of see what they were going for by doind that but it just comes across as awkward.

"The dialogue is meant to sound stupid. The acting is supposed to be bad. The effects are meant to look fake." It really takes any responsiblity out of the directors hands. That's crap. Uwe Boll should start using this excuse.
This is a movie, it's not a comic book. People should be able to enjoy it on the level of being a 'movie'. It doesn't sound like they can. If it only exists as being a good comic book, then they should have left it as that.

I saw this Friday night. I was one of the few that really liked Aeon Flux, ie, I love this genre of movie. Futuristic sci-fi revenge action. And the trailers for this movie really got me looking forward to it. Well, the trailers were full of shit. Not one trailer I saw had any mention of the
I'll get into that in a minute though.
Making this a PG-13 was just hillarious. After the first big sword fight scene, I was tempted to just walk out of the film and save myself time. Guess what? Sword scenes don't work when you show a sword going into someone's neck, and no blood. And even worse, the sword didn't even look like it was going into the neck. It looked just like what it really was, a prop hitting the side of someone's neck. This film was just laughable with all the sword scenes tamed down to a elementary school audience. Utterly horrible. I'm not asking for a blood bath, but if you're going to make the movie rotate around one woman killing hundreds with a sword, guess what, it's going to look ridiculous if you want to get a PG-13.
The CGI has already been discussed, but let me add another voice to the chorus. Horrid. The whole motor-cycle chase scene was just awful. Seriously it looked like something done in the 80's, it was so insanely fake.
Then to the big problem. There aren't any real spoilers, so if you want to know why you should not waste a second on this film, read on.
I'm not going to waste any more time on this giant turd. Bottom line, I loved Aeon Flux. This movie is the worst film I have EVER seen. And that speaks volumes. Battlefield Earth makes this look good. It was SO bad that my theatre, which had probably three hundred people watching it on Friday night, erupted in boos when it ended. I go to the movies every single week, and I've never heard one person boo at the end of a film. I'd say 75% of the audience was booing as the credits rolled. It's just that bad.

Terrible movie
I absolutely loved Equilibrium, and consider it one of my favorite action films of recent memory, and despite the abhorrent reviews I decided to give this a shot, hoping the action would be redeeming. However even the action seemed to fall flat.
It felt like they kept throwing out different groups of enemies that we're supposed to believe are a threat, however with little information about these group of people, it seems empty and boring.
Everything else regarding the storyline with the child was already summed up. Ugh. I had such high hopes too.

Sorry to see such bad reviews here. The trailer never wowed me but I like Equilibrium so much I was hoping this'd be good.
Any chance that Dimension might make a DVD re-release of Equilibrium to coincide with the evenetual DVD release of this feature?

I saw this over the weekend and thought it was really bad. I liked Wimmer on Red Dwarf, I thought he was very funny there, but he has no talent for directing movies.

Hrmm... Anyone know the record for the worst rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Looks like this is going to come close. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10004504-ultraviolet/

Looks like I was correct when I called for somebody to get fired over this when I saw the first preview for it. Upon reflection, I realize that this movie really was a failure, and I don't know if an R would have helped it or not. No wonder they didn't screen this one for critics.
