Ah, yes. Another green propaganda message film. We certainly don't have enough of those!
Plus, I don't think I have ever seen so many ads and trailers as much for any other film in my life. Plus it's a sequel to a stinker to begin with. Plus I can't stand it that Evan says "eminent" when he means "imminent" in the trailer and I had to hear that about 10,000 times (at least that's what it sounds like to me). I have to admit I'm taking a certain amount of pleasure in seeing this film way underperform (I suppose when all is said and done with international box office and DVD sales it won't be the bomb some are now expecting but it also will not make much, if anything at all).
Saw 1408 today instead of EA. I have no doubt that was the right choice.
What would Noah do?

Universal Pictures' very expensive Noah's Ark comedy, "Evan Almighty" (which opened Friday), has been waving a large "green" flag.
Several corporations are backing a $25 million cross-promotion that fights global warming while touting the movie's pro-environment message. The Hollywood premiere featured a green carpet, and recycled goody bags containing pro-environment trinkets (a halogen bulb, flower seeds ... ) reportedly were given out at the afterparty.
Meanwhile last Saturday and Sunday, sunbathers and swimmers at the beaches along Chicago's lakefront were treated to not one, not two but four small airplanes flying up and down and up and down the shoreline trailing billboard-size banners promoting "Evan Almighty."
I'm sure those planes were running on "green" fuel.

Just watched it. Pretty poor film. Only laughed once or twice the entire time.
Carell wasn't very funny and THAT GODDAMN DANCE WAS ONE OF THE STUPIDEST THINGS I HAVE EVER SEEN PUT ON FILM. I love the Office, one of my alltime favorite tv shows, this was such a disappointment. 4/10

But it is a light family crowd-pleaser and nothing more. Of course, I walked in thinking it was going to be Leonard Part 6, so maybe my expectations were in the right place.
... I mean, sure the budget is the problem with this film, but it was still a decent enough flick to go watch on a summer afternoon.

Again, he cant hold anything up on his own. The 4 vehicles you mentioned all prove that

Considering that by your logic that this film is the first one he's had to carry on his own, it's a bit too soon to say that he definitively can't "hold a project up on his own."

Look at everything else he has been in. The Office isn't funny just because of him. Little Miss Sunshine is always going to be that little girls movie, not Steve Carrells. 40 Year Old Virgin had to have Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen to get over. Anchorman was an ensemble of hilarity. Bruce Almighty relied on a little comedian I like to call Jim Carrey.
Evan Almighty was the first big test to see how Steve Carrell could hold his own. Guess what, he failed...big. Doesnt look good for the future.

That said, the only way this reflects on Carrel is the fact he signed on in the first place. Terrible idea for a movie, poor script, and poor direction. Jim Carrey would have been sunk on this one as well.

I'm in the minority but The Office is not a funny show & its beyond me why people watch it over an actual funny show & probally the greatest comedy of all-time, Scrubs.
But on that note I find Steve Carrell to be a very likeable person but its just to bad that most of the stuff he is in is either really bad or not very intresting.

I went and saw this last weekend. If you have kids, they'll enjoy the movie and laugh and you'll have a good time. I saw it solo (my first time EVER seeing a movie in a theater alone - I'm out of town on business - I couldn't stand to sit in my 12x12 "prison cell" hotel room any longer!) and I enjoyed it. Does it have "AWESOME" special effects? Maybe not (but they weren't HORRIBLE - they were fine). Is it the funniest movie I've ever seen? No. But there's a HELLUVA lot worse films for families that I've seen.
Look, I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before, but this is a PG rated movie for families and a nice little date-movie. It serves a niche and it does it well. I really enjoyed it (and later saw Knocked Up - which I also really enjoyed).
Morgan Freeman is very sweet and endearing in this movie as well. I'll tell you something (that I'm a bit embarassed by): I saw five movies this weekend: Evan Almighty, Knocked Up, 1408, Fantastic Four 2, and Ocean's 13. Of all those movies, Evan Almighty is the only one that got applause when it was over (although 1408 deserved applause.

Saw it.
It was a very kind, good natured movie. It is a Tom Shadyac movie, after all. It had a good sort of 'Sunday Morning' attitude to it.
I think I laughed out loud ten-or-so times ... which is pretty good. Not much stuff makes me laugh. I'll often times sit down and watch a comedy with a straight face the whole time.
It was kind of 'quick and zippy'. Nothing really ran on too long. They never really slowed down at any point. The ark plot started five minutes in.
Steve Carrell was really the only tangible strong point of the movie. He just played his regular demeanor. But that was cool with me.
Carrell and Morgan Freeman seemed to be having lots of fun with the material. Everyone else was just 'there', and didn't really serve a purpose with the comedy.
It was a bit of a departure from the first one. There weren't any sex jokes or anything.
The "green" message was hardly there. The movie was far to polite to say anything in a stern matter.
It wasn't very memorable. But it was definately above par. I'm sure I'll watch it again on DVD or TV.

I'd have to agree. You have to be consistent with the movie evaluations. If you blame Carrell for Evan Almighty (a film in which he was the clear lead), you similarly have to priase him for 40-year old Virgin (a film in which he was the clear lead). You can't pick and choose by saying the latter had Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan so it doesn't count. It all counts or none of it counts, but you have to stay consistent.
A better answer is that neither Evan Almighty or 40-Year old Virgin can solely be praised or condemned for Steve Carrell. A movie is a compliation of many people and many factors. Steve Carrell is one of those factors. But no one factor can sway the outcome of the movie, whether good or bad. Enough other good or bad factors together will sway the final outcome.

We have a very rainy 4th of July here so the movies were very crowded. We decided to see this one and I almost didn't go because of the bad reviews. I have to say I found it very cute and amusing. I give it a c+. It did carry a message but I didn't feel it was overly heavy handed. I felt Happy Feet hammered me over the head with how bad people are. This focuses on corrupt politicians who we all like to see get their come-upance. The message of family outweighed the "green" message IMO.

This movie is not one of the "worst movies of the 00s". It won't be on the best movies list, but it's not the worst. Actually, for a non-Pixar family movie, I really really enjoyed myself. I thought it was funny (interesting) that this movie paralleled the running joke in Knocked Up (another Universal movie) about facial hair. I'd rather see this than the average family film, to be honest. The laughs were there more often than the duds. It also helps I really like looking at animals.
When I was watching I could only envision Giantrobo rolling his eyes at all the slapstick humor.

It is pretty much a kids movie, which must have made marketing this movie really difficult, considering how many pg13 and r-rated jokes the first movie had (not to mention Carrel's most prominent roles are more adult in nature).

Saw it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. It grew on me as the film progressed, liked the message and didn't think it was too heavy-handed at all. I'd give it a C/C+.
Not as many laugh out loud moments as Bruce Almighty, but I enjoyed the overall tone of Noah2 more.

Finally came up in my BB queue. Mildly enjoyable. Some cute stuff, and a few good laughs. As is a necessity with family movies today, lots of poop humor. And Morgan Freeman is always worth the price of admission. They tried to recreate the chest-waxing swearfest from 40 YOV with a scene of Even hammering his thumb, but he's not allowed to really cuss, which makes the whole scene a waste of time.

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I was watching SNL and it reminded me ... Did anyone else here do the "donate $5 and get your name in the DVD credits" thing? I did, and when I rented the DVD I never saw my name there. And, come to think about it, I never saw ANY list of the names of people who donated money so they could plant trees.
Anyone know what became of this?

I saw this on cable last night and found it mildly amusing overall. I'm glad I didn't spend $$ on the theater or DVD on this. The movie was way too hokey and predictable. While I think he's funny he's been funny in other vehicles, I thought the decision to put Jonah Hill in the role of a congressman's aide was pretty uninspired and lame casting, like the supporting cast was just slapped together by Hollywood.

Actually, they still have sex jokes. They're just not as crude as they are now days, and much funnier.
