Evan Almighty

Steve Carell is Evan Almighty
Source: Variety
August 26, 2005

The 40-Year-Old Virgin's Steve Carell is making a deal to star for Universal Pictures in Evan Almighty, says Variety.

Conceived for Jim Carrey until he declined to reprise his role in Bruce Almighty, the sequel will take the news anchor character Carell played in that film and put him on an Almighty-inspired quest to build an ark in preparation for a great flood.

Tom Shadyac will return as director, and Morgan Freeman is negotiating to encore as God. Steve Oedekerk wrote the script and plans are for the film to begin production early next year.

Carrey isn't expected to reprise his role from the original, nor will Jennifer Aniston.

Sony Pictures may distribute the film internationally. Universal has also warmed to the idea of making a line of future "Almighty" pictures, each of which would include Freeman as God.
Couldn't find another thread on this. What does everyone think about this? I like the idea of Carell's character in the God role, since he was a bit of an ass****. But the plotline about the Ark sounds pretty stupid.

This might make some sort of sense had his character had been the TV weather man.

Sounds extremely weak to me...why do studios insist on making sequels/prequels to Jim Carrey flicks WITHOUT JIM CARREY!!! The reason the originals do so well is because of HIM. I love Carell, but this sounds like a lame duck.

They better come up with an explanation in the story as to why Evan was selected, since he was more of a bit player and antagonist in the original. My guess is his babbling lead to the collapse of his professional career and he has since become a more humble person.

Probably something along the lines of "40 year old virgin made 100 million dollars" mixed with he was humbled by Jim Carrey's niceness in the end of the movie.

Doesn't matter to me...funny is funny. Plots in these types of films are really just clotheslines to hang the humor on.

I can't stand Jim Carrey anymore for this reason. Why can't he do the sequels to these movies? Does it degrade him so much or does he think he's better at doing dramas?

Pretty sure I said it in another Evan Almighty thread, but Steve Carell is funnier than Jim Carrey so bring it on.

I will remain hopeful but skeptical about this one. At least they seem to have some decent talent on this, including the original director of Bruce Almighty. Did the other non Carey sequels even have that going for them?

Trailer looks good, but just to keep in mind, this movie cost somewhere in the margin of $150 million. The movie better be good, or Universal is going to take another huge loss, even if it has a record-breaking weekend.

how in the world did it cost 150 million? I understand that Steve and Morgan are star power, and get payed well...but this is a sequel (little to no charachter development cost), doesn't have any Matrix inducing CGI or action sequences...

i'd love to see a numbers breakdown for that one

From what I understand, there will be some big effects sequences, so there ya go. Although for a comedy it's kinda odd.

I'm not sure why so many of you are trashing this one already. I wouldn't even think of comparing this to trash like Dumb and Dumberer or Jamie Kennedy's "Mask". It isn't like they went out and got an entire new cast, and stuck a horrible c-rate comedic actor in Jim Carrey's place. We have Morgan Freeman as God once again, and Steve f'n Carell. Heck, even John Goodman and the same director that did Bruce Almighty (Tom Shadyac) is on board.

The only thing about this that rubs me the wrong way is Wanda Sykes, and I doubt that she has a role large enough to kill the entire movie.

I say bring on Evan Almighty!
