Just saw it. Pretty good - a return to form for Ang Lee. Could see the film nominated for Best Director and best Cinematography. It stumbles at times, notably the terrible "aging" make-up of the leads, and the too-sudden change in their relationship. But it was a solidly made old-fashioned tale, though one does wish for a bit more oomphf. 7/10

I'd say this film's only chance at any box office success is awards recognition, and even then I don't see it making a lot. The preview doesn't look compelling to me. Think I'll just watch Open Range again.

but you are a 'mo. There's a difference. You're more apt to be aware of it.

I was disappointed to see the more recent thread on this movie got locked because of some insensitive comments. I just don't understand people who label it stuff like the "homosexual lifestyle" and are so juvenile that the thought of a "gay cowboy" makes them laugh. I won't bog this post down in any more of that, but it just makes me sad to see how little progress we have made in this country of being accepting of other people's choices.
That being said, I loved the movie. I had read parts of the other long thread and worried that I might find it too cheesy (one of the bigger complaints about the movie) but I enjoyed just about everything. I connected with both character and thought Heath Ledger's performance was nothing short of amazing. It's a shame he gave such a great performance in year that also contains Phillip Seymour Hoffman's "Capote" and Joaquin Phoenix's "Walk the Line."
I had also heard complaints that people were turned off from the movie because of the way Ennis treated his family, and I never get character issues like that. This is a movie, characters don't always do the right thing. Hell, that's true to life too. Nobody is all good or all bad. I've watched movies in which people do horrible, unspeakable things and I still was able to enjoy the movie and to some degree feel for the characters or at least not totally disconnect from them.
I wasn't sure how I would like this movie going into it. It wasn't the gay theme because I have no problem with that whatsoever. I was worried it would be too slow and I would have to be in the right mood to take it on. But even though it was slow-moving, I loved the pace and the entire feel of the movie. In fact, the only problem I have with it is the score. I especially got sick of that guitar chord strum they ended what seemed like every important scene with. Uggghhh. Not sure what they were going for there.
I hope the movie keeps getting the recognition I feel it deserves. Would love to see it win the Best Picture at the Oscars. It would be weird because I saw it on my birthday today and at this point last year my wife took me to see "Million Dollar Baby," which of course also went on to win Best Picture (in my mind at least deservedly).

badger1997 I agree. Ledger's performance is wonderful.
There will be some tough competition for him at the Oscars. I have not seen "Capote" but have heard that Hoffman is amazing....add this to all of his other excellent performances and I believe he will deservingly win.
I hope this opens the door for Ledger to be offered better roles from now on. His only other performance I have been impressed with besides "Brokeback" is in "Monsters Ball"
My parents don't go to the movies but want to see it when I have the DVD.

It's a GAY COWBOY movie. The fact that this is being made shows QUITE A BIT of "progress". Since when are you talking about? Maybe we've made little "progress" since last month, or last year, but I'm pretty sure we've made some "progress" over the last 40 years.

I'd love for a mod to chime in about why this thread was resurrected and especially why it was resurrected so soon.

The score was one of my favorite parts of Brokeback Mountain. It reminded me of The Straight Story, and while some of the musical cues could have been stronger, I really enjoyed the music. It may be my favorite score of the year.

Cinderella Man was great, but I love Thomas Newman's work. I also liked Pride and Prejudice score. I havent seen Memoirs of a Geisha, but supposedly its really good.

I think THE Oscar race to watch will be the one between Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman for Best Actor. Literally, without them Brokeback Mountain and Capote will be far lesser movies.

I think Best Actress and the supporting actor categories are more up in the air.
