I've always been fond of his quietly heroic performance in The Deer Hunter, though it's certainly lower key than many of his others and he was matched in it move for move by Christopher Walken, who won an Academy Award for his role.

His performance as Satan in ANGEL HEART should be considered.

A very close call for me . . . I went with Raging Bull over Taxi Driver.

I would say Heat. He is such a bad ass.

Godfather II is a better movie, but I think his performance is better in Taxi Driver.

I have to go with Godfather 2 because he was playing a younger version of a role someone had already perfected, and made it his own character.

Tough question.

I'd have to say his best perf was Jake LaMotta. Probably his defining role.

However as far as my favorite goes, I'd have a tough time differentiating between Jake, Jimmy Conway (Goodfellas), young Vito Corleone (G'Father II), Jack Walsh (Midnight Run), and Al Capone (Untouchables).

I'd also agree with JesseCuster on DeNiro's greatness as Michael Vronsky in The Deer Hunter, a much overlooked performance in a much overlooked film. I think he gets overlooked in that one because of all the powerful themes going on in that movie, and his under-stated performance.

What can I say? The guy's the greatest no matter what he does or has done recently. His record speaks for itself.

Jesus, nearly impossible to decide. Haven't seen all of the above (only 22 years old), but gotta go with Goodfellas, then Godfather Pt. II. Of course Taxi Driver is amazing, but something about Bobby in those first two...some of the best acting I've ever seen. In Goodfellas, he's pretty fuckin' badass.

some of my favorites are not options in the poll, but of the ones available to vote on, I had to go with Goodfellas.

This thread had my head going in circles. Not an Exorcist moment I assure you. Like others, it's just tough deciding on DeNiro's greatest performance. The man is one of the best of this or any generation. If I had to choose, I would have to say Raging Bull.

I probably enjoyed his Jack Walsh from Midnight Run the most. But LaMotta/Raging Bull was his finest acting.

Glad to see Cape Fear getting some love... scary stuff. Although I went with Raging Bull... they're all great.

Don Vito in Godfather Part II.......Sorry to sound so cliche, but he made the movie.
